Is It Safe!? For Applewhite And Chambers.

Kirk Bohls just tweeted:

I'm told that Mack Brown told certain assistants they were safe. Offensive list included only RB Major Applewhite, TE Bruce Chambers.

Star-divide

Good news on The Major as he is a clear staff asset. I'm indifferent to Chambers as I think he is valueless and taking up a potential rainmaker spot, but we have bigger rows to hoe. And bigger hos to sho' dee do'.

Actual Kirk Bohls tweet.

Only Texas OC Greg Davis would call for a fumble there. #ut

Zing! Take that Greg Davis critics.

Just waiting for Jerry Jones to fire Cam Newton. I mean, Cowboys’ train wreck of a season is the Auburn QB’s fault, right?

I don’t really understand this one.

Is this kind of like breaking up by text? Maybe Mack can de-friend Greg from Facebook and he will get the point.

by jinx on Nov 30, 2010 7:30 PM CST reply actions

Mack prefers to avoid confrontation. He won’t fire Greggie, he’ll just stop paying him.

That, and move his office to the basement of Bellmont.

And take away his stapler.

Jeff Fisher needs to pick up the phone and call Greg Davis to fire him like a man.

Maybe if they would just move Greg’s desk that would do the trick.

I paid out-of-pocket for 500 bumper stickers that will help our beloved program. Basically, they’re 3.5 inch round, red circles with diagonal slash, with “Greg Davis” in the middle. If you want one, and are serious about putting it on your back window, bumper, or vehicle (window is best for removal), I’ll send you one——free of charge. Just email me at NationOfHorns@gmail.com.

I love our football program. I love what Mack Brown has given us. But we have to make bold changes to stay on top. A battle is waging within Bellmont. And talking and blogging is great, but we can do more.

PS by the way, when I picked up the stickers, the guy at the print shop said he’s been having to beat employees off of the box that contained them, to keep them from taking stickers to put on their own cars! LOL

Horn on Horn violence. CA_Longhorn – have you considered that there might be other factors than RB coach that impact run game production?

1. O-line blocking schemes, O-line player development/strength & conditioning.
2. Overall offensive scheme (or lack thereof).
3. Effectiveness of your passing game.
4. Talent level of your current Rb’s.

Your backs ran hard all year, but obviously your running game was subpar. Given all the variables in play here, it’s amazing you can hone in on Rb coach as the source of the problem.

just a dissenting opinion here… it’s a crappy movie. Hoffman was all wrong for the part and sabotaged the entire thing. The book by William Goldman, however, was magnificent.

Last time I checked Greg Davis, McWhorter, and the rest of the staff were all here when we DID have a good running game. Maybe these coaches have all forgotten how to coach, but I doubt it. The passing game was definitely ineffective this season, but not last season. That means either the RBs are not talented, which is possible, or they aren’t being coached properly. Applewhite came onboard in the ’08 season which very neatly coincides with when our running game problems began.

By the way, I really don’t care if you ban me from your BLOG. Do you feel like a BIG MAN for banning me from your BLOG? I can easily change IP addresses, change my posting name, etc.

Oh and for the record I’m all for McWhorter leaving/retiring. I have nothing against Applewhite and hope he stays if he’s really a badass at recruiting. But to claim he’s an offensive genuis is wrong and he hasn’t done anything at RB coach worth mentioning yet. Hope he proves me wrong

by justhookit on Dec 1, 2010 3:03 AM CST reply actions

CA—the running game sucks because to Greg Davis it’s a disengaged conversation. When he calls a running play, he’s so bored that he pulls out his Iphone and checks Facebook.

Major has to be safe because it’s part of the master plan and mind screw test Mack has been orchestrating since 1998. Eh Scip? Mack’s entire coaching stretch has been nothing more than an elaborate cruel sadistic challenge to ruin Major for life……or make him into the greatest coach we have ever seen. Who has trained him? Greg Davis.

Greg is Major’s Pai Mei.

He must pass the test of leaving his OC job with Saban to go be a running backs coach under Davis who treats the running game like…“a red headed step child”—obvious entendre.

He must do this while having to watch Alabama take the title from him and envision himself celebrating if he’d just stayed on the other team….yeah that stings. BTW guess who recruited Ingram and Julio Jones? sting again.. oh fuck me it hurts.

He must then channel his anger and depression into a lesson of tolerance by going 2-5 at home while keeping his fastest back off the field.

To twist the knife, Davis would put DJ in occasionally just so Major could see what he was capable of…..then remove him and claim they were trying to figure out how to get him on the field more, all the while stroking his imaginary long white beard

Yes, his training is almost complete. He is safe, of course he is.

Ima going to need to see some 10 win seasons and/or 1000 yard rushers before I’ll entertain conversations about cutting back on porn.

by Bateshorn on Dec 1, 2010 5:59 AM CST reply actions

Even if Mack doesn’t recognize Major’s value, which is questionable since Mack has little regard for the recruits Major wants to pursue, Mack does recognize that if Major was cut loose it would irreperably alienate Muschamp.

CA_Longhorn: How much coaching do you think Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson needed? As for the coachable things, our RB’s do the tangible things well, i.e. ball security, blitz pick-up, and route assignments. It’s the things that can’t be coached like athleticism and vision. Major has been vetoed on the RB’s he wants. Hopefully this is the last time this needs explaining.

I bought a small trinket for a young lady in the Diamond District earlier this year, it was one of the scariest moments I’ve had in NYC, simply just by virtue of carrying that much cash around – (Unsurprisingly, a very cash based business, I imagine their tax returns have a degree of creativity), and then carrying it down that stretch of 47th street that, unlike most of Manhattan now, looks like it and its inhabitants had its best days in the 70’s. Figured I’d get clubbed in the head by a random Hasidim, taken to a basement and then dental-drilled repeatedly.

On the bright side though, i got a fabulous deal from a nameless wholesaler who I found by word of mouth, though it was basically a short guy sitting in a windowless room in an anonymous building – the way such things should be, really.

by abis on Dec 1, 2010 9:05 AM CST reply actions

First let me state I loved Major as a player. As a player he got screwed by GD and Mack. (Hot button issue!) That subject is in the past. As far as coaching job safety Major needs to be evaluated like all the Texas coaches. As a recruiter, I remember him losing Scott ( a good thing in the long run). The RBs were not world beaters and I agree the O-line is the main reason for this. The running game was ineffective and needs serious evaluation like everything else.

by bizzle on Dec 1, 2010 10:27 AM CST reply actions

Agreed. Whither post mortem?

by Ron Bourbon on Dec 1, 2010 10:42 AM CST reply actions

Major did not lose Scott. He was hired right before signing day and Scott, mad at the coaching change, didn’t even answer Major’s repeated phone calls. You can’t recruit a guy who won’t even talk to you. It would be completely unfair to blame that one on Major. Major’s preference for Michael over Whaley also has been well-documented. On both accounts the only person you could possibly blame is Mack. And I’m pretty sure we’ll see the exact same scenario play out once again with Williams. But the major thing that ignorant fans just aren’t capable of wrapping their brain around is that jukes, cuts, and vision are uncoachable. The things that a RB coach does affect are pass protection, taking care of the ball, and knowing your assignments. Our RBs were by far the best of all the offensive units at all three of these things. Anybody that just says, “Well, the running game is ineffective, therefore…” is a moron. Evaluating a RB coach is actually the simplest of all the positional coaches. With RB, more than any other postion, it’s usually quite plain to see whether a RB has talent or not once they’re all going against the same D1 talent, which in turn makes it easy to evaluate whether it’s a lack of talent that’s the problem or lack of the aforementioned pass protection, taking care of the ball, or missed assignments. I’m loathe to be dismissive, but if you’re even entertaining the idea that Major’s part of the problem, you truly know nothing about football and have no idea what your looking at on Saturdays.
