So who are the most likely candidates to replace him?

ChrisApplewhite just freshened up his resume.

Davis needs to be gone but please please don’t make Applewhite the OC. What a giant mistake that would be.

Give me the guy from Stanford or Arkansas.

Any new hires will be a strong indication of Muschamp’s influence. My guess is they will all be guys Muschamp has previously crossed paths during his career.

Good Lord, could this be the long-awaited day of our deliverance? And there’s a chance Fat Dog is out as S&C coach too? Christmas arrives 3 weeks early!

I’m gonna be walking around with a major priapism for the next couple of days if this is true.

Oh man I hope this is true.

Everyone thought Malzahn was a realistic choice because of an impending Auburn implosion. After NCAA’s limp decision, does that rule out that possibility?

great news. and as much as we all want Malzahn, i dont think that will happen. but we did steal mr. muschamp so who knows. I would suggest Les Koenning, Chad Morris, and Blake Anderson as other possibilities.

Lot of tension on the 40 acres over the last 6 days. Mack initially decided to make a change only at OL. Was told that wasn’t enough. And too many financial variables at play for UT to lose fan interest. Long meeting with Powers. Big cigars also weighed in. Justice prevails.

Fucking maddening if Brown truly tried to get away with changing only the OL coach.

Whatever Mack does next, I want to work for him and get my hands on pictures of him in compromising positions.

As of 3 p.m. CST, the Statesman hadn’t been able to confirm anything. Of course, y’all have been kicking the AAS’s ass for years now, so no big surprise.

Meanwhile, in Norman, upon hearing the news of Davis’ ouster, Bobby Stoops reportedly kicked a puppy.

huck, i don’t think you’ll need those pics. your first paycheck will set you up for life if you don’t die or something.

my big worry if mack intended only to replace mac is that he could easily go p.a. and screw up next year out of spite. i’m hoping his desire to be remembered as a lion of the game (still achievable) would outweigh his sense of pique.

If anyone has knowledge of the situation…is there any truth to the rumor that some big wigs weren’t present in their boxes for the FAU and A&M games in an attempt to express their displeaure with this team? Many claimed that big money had no influence over what Mack would do as he is the end all be all of everything Texas, but looks like that wasn’t the case after all.

Mack has done a great deal for football at Texas, but ultimately, he doesn’t wield the real power, and there are folks who will slit his throat without thinking twice if they decide it’s in the best interest of the program.

I can’t believe after all that happened this season that Mack thought a little Band-aid would cover the festering, oozing, gangrenous wound that the program is right now. Luckily, others intervened.

by burnt orange outrage on Dec 2, 2010 4:15 PM CST reply actions

The fact that Mack thought an OL coach change was all that was needed is telling. I remember reading how US presidents are so stuck in a protective bubble that they often lose touch with reality and/or the public perception. 13 years of coaching at Texas has obviously done the same to Mack.

by stuckinmn on Dec 2, 2010 4:20 PM CST reply actions

It’s not true that Mack thought all that was needed was an OL coach. He understood Davis had underperformed. As well as some other position coaches.

His issue was whether GD should still have a football staff position.

Well, how many people who have regular face time with Mack are going to present him with a competing narrative? He’s got to be compartmentalized to one degree or another.

by Orange River on Dec 2, 2010 6:09 PM CST reply actions

Mack was not ready to make a change at OC. He was willing to make a change at OL and shift some other staff positions and give Major more play calling responsibilities. That was not met favorably. If you think he came to the GD decision on his own, you’re mistaken. Major pressure was brought to bear.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 2, 2010 7:27 PM CST reply actions

Whatever led Mack to his “Come to Jesus” moment, a change at the OC position is necessary, and when confirmed, great news for the Horns, IF the right replacement is chosen. That being said, I hope Davis is offered a chance to land on his feet with a good job within the athletic department.

I’m no Greg Davis fan or defender. His shortcomings as a gameday playcaller have been as obvious as the nose on Bob Hope’s face. However, despite all the carping of fans and others toward him, Davis kept his peace, did not try to shift the blame, and has always tried to represent UT well.

There’s never a good time to lose your job, to in essence be told you’re not good enough to hold it. Times now, with the economy in the ditch, are even worse. This has to be hell for Davis, and Mack. Both are honorable men, maybe to a fault, and I’m sorry to see them have to go through Davis being pilloried in public almost hourly like this. However, I’m equally sorry to see a team that’s enjoyed so much success for over a decade fall flat on its’ face, as the Horns did this year. The problems run deep, and the coaching changes are necessary to fix those problems before the Longhorn football program slips any further.

I hope any action taken toward Davis’ future happens quickly. Whatever his shortcomings as an OC, he does NOT deserve to be left twisting in the wind. That would deliver a message about this program that UT does not want to send.

by coolhorn on Dec 2, 2010 7:40 PM CST reply actions

A lot of smart fellas here thought Brown would never fire Davis….

by Orange River on Dec 2, 2010 7:45 PM CST reply actions

Right, his initial instinct was to go for fairly minor changes. The good news about the 5-7 abomination is that Mack’s freedom was curtailed and other parties felt empowered and compelled to weigh in. The net result is a good one.

by ex cathedra on Dec 2, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

How many of mack’s friends should the university continue to subsidize? Enough is enough. I hope we cut the fat an get rid of it.

Davis will land on hid feet just fine. He’s been making a pile of money for a good long time. Despite his faults as an OC he gave us a lot of years and I appreciate the effort. He certainly doesn’t need some kind of sinecure from UT to keep out of the breadline.

Let’s not get carried away with a pity party, folks. The only thing hurt is his pride and friendship. I understand that it’d be tough to be told by your best friend that you suck at your job. I get that, not fun. I feel a little bad for him on that part, really do. But let’s not forget that he has been a lazy and arrogant offensive coordinator that showed little evidence of game planning for any opponent beyond whoever was after the bye week and (sometimes) OU. Nor appeared contrite in the wake of the recent losses. Remember his “I may not be the smartest guy in the room, but I could match wits with anyone in this room” press conference line after a loss? Doesn’t reek of a man having been humbled. Or how about every time he’s lied to us about getting DJ more involved? I begin to feel pity for him, and then remember that this was something he could have avoided for a long time.

And I’m not too sure the “hard times” pity needs to be laid at his feet either. Unless if he’s a real high roller that likes to make it rain on a nightly basis at the Landing Strip, and then follows that up with a healthy does of high level gambling, he’ll be just fine. He’s made more in a year than I’ve made in my (short) lifetime.

I feel pity for the man in the same way I felt a slight pity for Captain Sobel in the first episode of Band of Brothers when he was genuinely shocked, surprised and saddened when informed he’d been reassigned from Easy Company. He simply didn’t see it coming. I’m not discouraging affording the man some level of pity, but let’s not forget why he’s here in the first place.

Not really arguing your point, but that wasn’t exactly a scoop. A lot of people knew that, and a lot of people had been very unhappy since earlier in the season. But yes, he was the first to post it. Guess we should all start taking pictures in the boxes at DKR. Or go hunt.

I didn’t think it was possible that I could hate GD GD any more than I do; the fact that he is being an utter ass during this is so f*ing telling. He’s lazy and he’s entitled and his response is pro forma for those types. We don’t owe that sack a thing. Storming around Belmont, treating people just shabbily when he can get away with it – I’ll be pissed if he’s allowed to remain anywhere on our payroll.

I know Mack really does think “Mack Brown- Texas Football” is more than just a URL, but this saga with GD GD needs to come to a complete and final end.
