Aaron Williams Declares for the NFL Draft

It's true. Even the Statesman has the report. This obviously will make our already porous secondary even more of a project next year. Our top three corners from last year will have all left the 40 acres.

The elder Williams said he and his son consulted with numerous former Longhorns as well as NFL scouts before Aaron made the decision. Anthony said Aaron received a report from the NFL indicating he’d be either a first- or second-round pick.

And it comes from a position where we didn't lose our position coach. Carrington Byndom (from Dynasty fame) and Adrian White will need to grow up fast. I wish Aaron, or is it AJ, the best of luck.

Thoughts on how this will help or hurt our defensive rebuilding?

We are amazingly depleted at so many positions. For a team that has such a notorious reputation for rewarding upper classmen at the expense of the younger, more talented sophs and frosh’s, we don’t seem to have many of those upper classmen sticking around. 2011 does not look particularly promising to me.

Good luck to him. I thought he looked better his first two years, but I have no doubts he’ll be an awesome pro. If he has a great combine, I can see him at #15 or so.

Always love watching that play.

Where’s the one where he picks the guy up and bod slams him?

I can has Quandre?

I think the writing was on the wall (if not already) once Muschamp left. Best of luck to A-Will. I’ll always remember the Superman INT of Landry Jones.

Sailor, great minds…

Fitz-

So did a lot of other players look better before this season. Remember when we actually felt sorry for Blake Gideon for blowing the game in Lubbock? When you

Any corner is going to look better with a Pro-Bowl caliber safety erasing his mistakes and having first round caliber defensive ends.

Our corners were probably one of the better units on the team.

I wish him well. If AJ is a first or second round pick potential. Then yes, seize the opportunity. This is college football. The staff had to know this potential existed before 2010 season. Thus giving experience to other CB when possible. Byndom and White have a lot of potential.

FYI this means only 4 more need to leave to get to 85 next season. That’s easy.

Love that Colorado clip. I’ll miss the days of him trying to fight entire offensive lines his freshman year.

by villagehorn on Dec 30, 2010 6:27 PM CST reply actions

He’s really good. If Randell goes too, the UT defense will be almost as much of an unknown as that offense.

And then the " We’re Texas Political correct crowd told Mack to " get nice kids"

Boom we go 5-7 and suck again. There is a segment of Texas alums and money people that hold thier pinky out and want to play FB like the Ivy league. But then disappear when we get to 5-7.

Um, what?

by Sailor Ripley on Dec 30, 2010 7:03 PM CST reply actions

JC – the writing was on the wall BEFORE Muschamp left. Dude is good. Muschamp still being here would not have changed him from a 1st/2nd to a 3rd/4th. The kids coming out for the draft after this one are going to make a LOT less money. Its quite possible that he will make more as a late 1st rounder this year than he would as a top 10 or 15 pick next.

by ut-06 on Dec 30, 2010 7:09 PM CST reply actions

Clarify the “would not have changed him from a 1st/2nd to a 3rd/4th” comment. The only reason he would and should have waited is if he was going to be a 3rd/4th.

Texans trade back their ~7 spot, pick up an extra 2nd and 3rd, and draft AJ at # 20ish? I can dream.

ut-06,

I agree completely. It was widely talked about at the the start of the season that if AJ had a solid year he was gone. This is the reason why there was such an emphasis on landing Turner, why it hurt that Texas didn’t get on Jenkins sooner, and why I wish they would have offered Charles Jackson.

In regards to the comment about not many of the upper classmen sticking around, aside for AJ who has left?

by Davey O'Brien on Dec 30, 2010 7:32 PM CST reply actions

AJ was not the same player after the Gideon hit. He seemed like he was mentally checked out. I think the combination of that concussion, the crappy season, and general morale that engulfed the team led to his play down the stretch. I watched him and he seemed to be going through the motions to some degree. I’m not criticizing him. He has to think about his future.

by t1climb1 on Dec 30, 2010 7:54 PM CST reply actions

It seemed like the whole team, except maybe the Acho brothers, checked out after the Nebraska game!

Good luck in the UFL!!

Seriously.. What if the Owners and the Players Association don’t come to an agreement? Will these type of players, juniors that declare for the NFL draft, be stuck in limbo?

One more day before 2011, one last dry ass fuck.

by Austin Ex on Dec 31, 2010 12:06 AM CST reply actions

While he was really good, I think it’s more important to have a good pass rush than secondary. And having Earl Thomas helps a lot when you can play aggressive and if you get beat Earl gets a pick. So I think we should play Adrian Phillips at free safety so Gideon can drop water battles and hopefully get some pass rush. That was the difference between this years secondary and ‘09s. It’s easy to look good when the qb can’t do anything or when Earl Thomas roams the field.

AJ, good for you, I wish you well and appreciate the hard play you gave us.

As for the rest of us left behind, I only have one thing to say, the same thing I’ve been saying it seems since the 1st quarter of the Rose Bowl for an entire year now.

…..kiss…mah…grits.

by Saltshaker on Dec 31, 2010 11:13 AM CST reply actions

Dang, maybe we can apply for a 1 year membership to the Big 10 next season. Top 3 CBs gone combined with shaky (at best) safety play doesn’t bode well in a pass-happy conference.
