The New Football Coach at Maryland is

not Mike Leach.

At least according to ESPN.

Randy Edsall reportedly did not return on the Connecticut charter after the Fiesta Bowl, but instead headed to Maryland for contract negotiations. Edsall is 74-70 as head coach of the Huskies. Edsall is a branch off the Tom Coughlin Tree. Edsall played for Coughlin at Syracuse University and later coached under him at Syracuse, at Boston College, and with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

As for Leach, he says as far as he knows he is still in the running for the Maryland position.

"Dunno what they're going to do," Leach said in a text message. "My record speaks for itself."

Wouldn’t you rather have Edsall too? I am a little surprised Edsall has not landed a better job by now. I don’t know how much of an improvement Maryland really is over UConn.

It’s in the ACC — and the Big East is a horrible football league. At least in the ACC you have natural rivalries that will get you on prime time TV.

I wonder if Leach might be up for Michigan (assuming RichRod is a goner).

NW, I have a terrible headache and am in a piss poor mood, so I’m going to say something I normally would only have thought: that is an outright retarded suggestion. I mean full retard. Leach can’t get an interview at Miami, had to beg for an interview at Washington a couple years ago, yet he’s in line for a top 5-10 job in the country? Laughable.

That move’s as lateral as a Greg Davis game plan.

Zing.

No way Leach is ever even considered for the head job at a flag ship program. Programs like Maryland are the best Leach could ever hope for. His personality is too much and can never be overcome by his coaching ability . He simply will not be tolerated at big time program.

Middling schools in a BCS conference will be where Leach tops out as an HC.

Not suggesting, just wondering. His name pops up with every opening. Personally, I hope to never see him stalking a sideline. Can’t stand him and the media mancrush for him.

Sorry you’re in such a crummy mood.

I was kind of hoping for coaching news about a different school.

I don’t know how much of an improvement Maryland really is over UConn.

In addition to what srr50 said, UConn has to have one of the worst (if not the worst) recruiting base of any BCS school. It’s located in a tiny state that produces very little D-1 football talent, surrounded by other tiny states that produce very little D-1 football talent. Maryland isn’t going to be the top choice for very many elite recruits, but at least they have access to Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region.

I wonder if Leach might be up for Michigan (assuming RichRod is a goner).

I’m sure Leach is up for it. Seriously doubt Michigan is up for Leach though.

Michigan would hire Charlie Weis before they would hire Mike Leach.

by srr50 on Jan 2, 2011 6:07 PM CST reply actions

UConn might hire Leach. That’s probably the highest level he’s got a shot at.

by llogg on Jan 2, 2011 6:17 PM CST reply actions

Would laugh my ass off if Leach went to UConn and then managed to spoil a perfect season or two for TCU!

by Ricky on Jan 2, 2011 6:23 PM CST reply actions

To srr50 and bigduke, I realize Maryland is a step up from UConn, I just think it is a modest step up. I wonder if Edsall just might be better off waiting for a better job to open up.

As for Michigan, they have to go all out for Harbaugh, but even if he turns them down, approximately 5000 more coaches will have to turn them down as well before they call up Leach.

No.

Greg Schiano can explain it best.

My guess is that Kevin Sumlin goes to Pitt or somewhere else, and UH happily hires Leach. He did color for several of their games this year and the school wants publicity as they chase Big East membership. A good fit.

Wyatt officially to Texas as WR/Co-coordinator for recruiting. Posted at Mack Brown Texas Football. Is it going to be like the 12 days of Christmas, or does this mean that we still don’t have anyone else who has accepted an offer to coach here?

by Ricky on Jan 2, 2011 7:19 PM CST reply actions

What confuses me about this hire is that Maryland supposedly fired Fredgen because they couldn’t fill the seats or suites. How does Edsell do that better? Leach could do it.

by holdem on Jan 2, 2011 9:01 PM CST reply actions

If Wyatt is the Co-coordinator for recruiting, who is the other co-? Applewhite?

by Horncasting on Jan 2, 2011 9:05 PM CST reply actions

A coach to be named later?

by Puma Smell on Jan 2, 2011 9:11 PM CST reply actions

I like Edsall, I think that’s a good hire. I also hope Leach gets back into coaching. I like his candor.

by Juice on Jan 2, 2011 9:23 PM CST reply actions

Chambers is co coordinator.

by Hipster on Jan 2, 2011 9:27 PM CST reply actions

I think Wyatt co-coordinates with Chambers on recruiting. I believe that was Kennedy’s title as well.

by Ricky on Jan 2, 2011 9:27 PM CST reply actions

I grew up in Connecticut, and the only reason that Maryland isn’t a bigger step-up from UCONN is the good job the Edsall did there. He’ll have a much easier time recruiting there than to Storrs/East Hartford, but he is still going from one basketball school to another. As for butts in the seats and selling boxes, any coach would do that for the first year or so just because of the “newness” and excitement. He’s not the most exciting person, so we’ll see if that lasts past the honeymoon period.

Loved what Leach did for Tech’s program, but every time the man has opened his mouth since he was fired makes me grateful we have Head Coach Tommy Tuberville.

Texas Tech is better off without Mike Leach, can’t say that Leach is better off without Texas Tech.

Edsall won’t solve Maryland’s attendance problem … and I doubt Leach would have either. College Park sits right in the middle of a rabid pro football area … Skins and Ravens drive that market. College sports in this region is defined by ACC and Big East basketball.

by VirginiaLonghorn on Jan 3, 2011 7:30 AM CST reply actions

Leach is a great OC. Anyone who hires him as a head coach has to deal with a lot of shit.

MD is another school that thinks they are something they are not. MD would have beat UCONN by 14 this year.

by Savage Henry on Jan 3, 2011 7:40 AM CST reply actions

Winning will cure Maryland’s attendance problems. The same way it cures everyone else’s. If freidgen had consistently won 9-10 games like he started out then he wouldn’t have had those attendance problems. Surely he would’ve been gone last year if Maryland had the money.

sigh…just heard Leach was in Stillwater at our basketball game last night
