Your Official Tuesday Coaching Changes And Hires Open Thread and Omnibus
Headliner:
Michigan apparentlty fires Rich Rod. Jim Harbaugh, Lester Miles, Bo Pelini and Greg Davis are all names being tossed around.
We have apparently hired some guys who ostensibly know how to run the ball and a guy who will tell some guys how to stop that sort of thing. Still a question about who that guy's boss will be.
I'd follow @Recruitocosm on the Twitter.
What else you got?

Fuck we’re hiring Greg back.

In all fairness, nordberg, I don’t think he meant someone to teach our offense how to stop the run.

What’s funny is that Sailor said Greg Davis’ name was being tossed around.

Think how much better your defensive would have been this year if you’d been able to face a Greg Davis offense in a game, rather than in practice? Like Calvin Coolidge – He chooses not to run.

Sally has met with Mrs Diaz and given her the Sally Brown Instructional Handbooks (SBIH) on Family Atmosphere Guidelines (FAG), Holiday Party Attendance Bylaws (HPAB) and the Dress Codes for Coaches Wives (DCCW). The deal with Coach Diaz will become binding upon Mrs. Diaz’s written acceptance of all rules and regulations set forth therein.

Leach could be pretty salty in San Diego if Michigan settles on Hoke.

Pitt should hire Rich Rod immediately. Big East…. WV rival…. good times will be had.

“Sally Brown Instructional Handbooks”
anybody else read “jobs” instead of “books”?

After RichRod, I don’t believe the Wolverines will turn to a former Lloyd Carr assistant who had a losing record as a head coach.

This is why our defensive stats are always more impressive than they appear on paper

Supposedly Michigan has wised up and doesn’t want Lester this time around.

Maybe not, but it’s not like the guy hasn’t done well at each job. RR had a really good record, and he didn’t work out.
Besides, what home run can they hit?

Who does LSU target if Lester heads to Michigan?
I like that we don’t have to worry about LSU poaching Muschamp from us anymore.

Petrino, Peterson, Patterson, Mullen?

They would have to take a look at Greg Davis. The guy coordinated some of the most prolific offenses of the last decade and is a Broyles award winner.

I’m with ACE. Seems like a no-brainer — LSU should look hard at Davis, a guy who can really make the most of the dual-threat quarterbacks littering its roster.
I cannot believe anyone would want Lester. UM needs to be very, very careful with this hire — they are treading on Notre Dame precedent if they miss again. A rust-belt program cannot afford to fall off the national radar because it’s too hard to get enough local talent to field a great team up there.
by Toadvine on Jan 4, 2011 4:04 PM CST reply actions
I want Greg Davis to get a HC job only for the amusement his press conferences would bring. It would be hilarious to watch the fans of the program as they realize their head coach is an inarticulate dipshit.

Actually there are some who would like to make a run at Petersen at Boise State. The theory being that it would be a smooth transition offensively with what RichRod has on campus, and Petersen is much closer to being a “Michigan Man” in temperment and character.
by srr50 on Jan 4, 2011 4:18 PM CST reply actions
Greg Davis just got fired from a 5-7 UT team. No one is even looking at him, much less hiring him. But it would be hysterical if someone did.
In any case, it would appear that UM looked at Texas’ likely HC search in late 2011 and decided to get someone now, rather than have the top 2 programs in college football both looking for a HC at the same time.
I think it’s Harbaugh, but I know nada.

True. They should then look away, pick the Sherminator, and GD GD can return to the scene of his first college coaching job. The Fightin’ Texas Iggies deserve this.

Brad Franchione resigned from Blinn.
Just saying…

Patterson isn’t a Michigan man, but that’s who I would make a run at. He seems like a fit for the Big Ten.
by ultralight on Jan 4, 2011 4:22 PM CST reply actions
srr, I would agree with that assessment of Peterson.
by Bob in Houston on Jan 4, 2011 4:25 PM CST reply actions
Pat Fitzgerald and Peterson are the top candidates, according to Chicago radio. This isn’t Lloyd Carr’s AD anymore. His guys aren’t considered top hires. That includes Miles, who, after the stink left by Rich-Rod and the NCAA, is a less desirable SEC guy.
by Mocking Bird on Jan 4, 2011 4:33 PM CST reply actions
Pat Fitzgerald is a good football coach and would make a lot of sense, IMO.
by Toadvine on Jan 4, 2011 4:35 PM CST reply actions

Personally I’d rule out Miles because he’s a buffoon, not because he’s an SEC guy. But the end result is all that matters.
by bigdukesix on Jan 4, 2011 4:37 PM CST reply actions
Michigan would probably prefer a guy who doesn’t consult a Magic 8 Ball on matters of import.

Could somebody do me a favor and hire Gary Kubiak? Please?!?

by Homesick Alien on Jan 4, 2011 8:50 PM CST reply actions
I’m not in love with what I’m reading about Manny Diaz. Gambling blitzer. I would rather we build around sound principles and rely on overwhelming talent to make scoring difficult. Also, if we are getting Chrsyt and going to a power-running attack it doesn’t make sense to pair that with a risk-taking defense that can get us behind early.
by Nickel Rover on Jan 4, 2011 10:36 PM CST reply actions
I don’t care anymore. Fuck this offseason. After fucking this season.
Fuck.

Nickel, my preference as well.
Two things though:
1. Perhaps Diaz had adapted his style to the personnel available at MSU. It’s obviously not a place where one can rely on overwhelming talent. Some risk-taking is probably necessary when playing against SEC offenses that have considerably better players than his defense.
2. A strategy dependent on overwhelming talent needs good defensive recruiters. Diaz seems to have the most potential in that area of the candidates that have been seriously discussed.
by bigdukesix on Jan 5, 2011 12:26 PM CST reply actions
I would rather have a DC who is flexible, who will adjust how agressive (i.e. risk taking) we will be based on matchups we will see, rather than pick a profile and stick to it. ~ kind of like Coach Boom.
by jkabuldog on Jan 5, 2011 4:53 PM CST reply actions
Diaz is a big time risky hire but BWTF. The guy was CO defensive coordinator at a second tier SECc team for one year. He had a compatriot coordinator to help him (former OU guy) and Mullen. This will be his first time on his own on any meaningful stage. He has no meaningful track record but he is articulate, good looking Sally approves) and his wife is smar. Gee wiz we should all be damn excited!
