Mad Hatter Heading Home?

There are numerous reports that Michigan wants to talk to LSU Coach Les Miles, and that he is more than willing to listen.

Miles just finished his 6th year at LSU with a thumping of Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, and the Wolverines hope to appeal to his strong Michigan ties.

Les Miles was a two-year starting offensive lineman (1974-75) for Bo Schembechler.

Miles not only played at Michigan, he also served two different terms there as an assistant coach. He met his future wife there while he was assistant and she was a assistant women's basketball coach.

Miles reputation as a goofball who sometimes goes brain-dead on gameday may be well deserved, but he has been very successful in the SEC. He is 61-17 (78%) in six years at LSU -- including a 2-2 record against Alabama along with a National Championship. He is 5-1 in bowl games at LSU.

The fact that Miles beat Ohio State and Jim Tressel for the BCS title is not lost on Wolverine faithful. Tressel is 9-1 against Michigan.

The idea of conservative, meticulous "Mr. Sweater Vest" vs. the "Mad Hatter" is intriguing.

The idea of Les Miles vs. Bo Pelini is "Must See TV", of course Nebraska fans are worried Bo may head back to Baton Rouge.

If he goes…do we regret not waiting to see if we could get Moffitt here?

Who says we didn’t try to get Moffit? I think he is comfortable where he is and had more than enough SEC connections to end up wherever he wants should Miles go.

I can’t express just how much I hope the Hat goes to Ann Arbor.

When Muschamp sees Urban talking to boosters and media after a loss, will he think, “I could have had the LSU job?”

by TaylorTRoom on Jan 9, 2011 1:25 PM CST reply actions

srr50, I know we contacted Moffitt and obviously he said, ‘No’. But would that change if Miles is gone? Maybe not, but it doesn’t mean that the dynamics of his situation haven’t completely changed. If Miles goes and Moffitt lands somewhere else we have to wonder what could have been. Obviously Moffitt would have his pick of jobs if he decides to leave this year, but now Texas isn’t one of them.

I think I’d strongly prefer The Mad Hatter relocate and the matchup with Tressel would be awesomeness. Less Les would be more for us.

BlackHarsin – the scenario does epitomize the concept of Les is More.

Interesting thoughts about the potential of LSU, Iceberg.

LSU > Michigan, though Les sees himself as a Michigan Man.

lsu is always a dangerous team, i kinda like having a coach there that is guaranteed to blow one or two games a year because of stupid clock management or a terrible call, while at the same time beating a few top sec teams per year. sec attrition is key. and, at the same time, michigan is down, and given the current state of the program, likely will be for a few years. i hope the hatter stays.

Pelini to LSU would be a win for Nebraska whether they initially recognize it that way or not.

That pic makes me realize just how likely it is that Les is one of Mike Leach’s illegitimate siblings. Maybe there is something to this “heredity” stuff after all…

Taylor – I had the same question re: Muschamp.

I’m glad how it worked out for Texas, as I wouldn’t want any part of him coaching at LSU and exploiting the recruiting connections that he’s made in East Texas over the last few years. He’ll probably still recruit here, but I think Baton Rouge is a much easier sell for players in that region than Gainesville.

First of all, pictures of planes are a lot better than inferences from computer maps.

Second of all, the paint job on that plane is about as subtle as Oprah in a bikini. Jesus.

Barking Carnival is dead. I mean, the story in Texas football of the year (new coaches) and you got jack. That’s it – I cancel my sub.

Guh – what are you babbling about?

Hearing Miles to Michigan 5 years 5 mill per.

Recruitocosm is the new Barking Carnival.

by Guh on Jan 10, 2011 4:19 PM CST reply actions

Oh, I see. I think maybe your missing the point.

Barking Carnival is dead.

Actually both sites seem pretty dead the last couple of days other than game threads.

Anyway with regard to this topic Les Miles is staying at LSU. (http://lsu.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1175149)
I think it’s a mistake on his part personally. Though I think he’s a bit of a nimrod, it’s undeniable he’s been very successful at LSU. Despite that he’s not well appreciated by the fan base.

Furthermore, I don’t see things getting easier for LSU with Bama still strong, Auburn becoming a powerhouse, MSU un the upswing, and Arky being dangerous. And that’s just in the West division. It’s not inconcievable that things could drop off a bit for LSU and Miles might actually be under some pressure with his job if that happened. In contrast, I think his chance of success and the level of appreciation he’d recieve would be much greater at Michigan.

That’s a good article on Tiger Bait. Thanks, Nunna.

I guess one could make a case both ways, the wisdom of staying at a program you have done well at, vs the tug of home. He has a good thing going in Baton Rouge, and his family likes it there. Bird in the hand.

Michigan will now move on, probably to Brady Hoke. Although Adam Schefter mentioned an interesting name the other day, someone who would listen if Michigan called: Tony Dungy.

(btw, what happened to Iceberg’s interesting post regarding LSU as a sleeping giant, whose full potential has not yet been realized?)

by GigoloJoe on Jan 11, 2011 1:51 PM CST reply actions

Forget what I said about Dungy. He’s not interested, per PFT.

by GigoloJoe on Jan 11, 2011 3:14 PM CST reply actions

It’s Hoke! Good hire, IMO.

GJ – I agree. He’s not the splash hire to the casual fan that Miles or Harbaugh might have been, but as RichRod proved splash hires aren’t always a good fit.

I have to admit I’m largely ignorant to the offense Hoke likes to run but I’m thinking I’ve read that he used an option style offense at SDSU. If so, that might ease the transition to Michigan’s current offensive personnel after they spent the last 3 years working to get people in place to fit RichRod’s scheme.
