Oregon / Auburn - BCS Championship Tailgating
Tonight's the night.
I fear the long layoff hurts Oregon more than Auburn. See Dick write here.
I know who Phil Knight likes. Who you got and why?

Auburn will break this one open late in the third. Oregon’s only hope is jumping to an early lead and to try to ride that momentum out to a win.

Agree. Ducks precision will be rusty. Cam won’t be stopped.
by Juan Beniquez on Jan 10, 2011 3:03 PM CST reply actions
Oregon comes back in the second half, tires out Auburn, and wins by ten or more points. See the Oregon v. Stanford tilt earlier this year for the blueprint.
by uthookem on Jan 10, 2011 3:05 PM CST reply actions
I’ll be cheering for Oregon, but think Auburn wins.
I generally think of Oregon as one of the shadier programs in the country, but the Cam Newton story was enough to sway me. Lesser of two evils, imo.
by Matt Cotcher on Jan 10, 2011 3:25 PM CST reply actions
There’s no way Cam lets them lose, unfortunately. I wish the NCAA would cause a diversion then come in and hit both teams over the head with a steel chair, but we know that won’t happen for five years.
It’s a hell of a night for wings and beer, I just hope the game goes down to the wire.
by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 10, 2011 3:41 PM CST reply actions
Easy……Oregon has multiple offensive weapons. Auburn has one, and it’s a good one. This game will come down to who punts less.
Oregon wins. Pac 10 offense will blow holes in SEC defense. Cam Newton will be hard to stop, but Oregon will stop him enough to win.
by Saltshaker on Jan 10, 2011 3:47 PM CST reply actions
If Oregon is smart, they’ll assign someone to bust Cam Newton’s balls on every play. Like the Horns did to Taylor Martinez of Nebraska. Auburn is so dependent on Newton that if he can’t play his game, IMO they are just barely above average.
by J.R.69 on Jan 10, 2011 3:50 PM CST reply actions
Oregon doesnt have anybody who can block Nick Fairley. And they don’t have anybody who can tackle the QB. Cheaters 30, Other Cheaters 13.
by Guh on Jan 10, 2011 3:51 PM CST reply actions
I thought the wrong team was favored at 3.5 and I still think that at 1.5. Here’s what I wrote in the bowl preview and it still stands:
BCS National Championship
Auburn 34 (-3)
Oregon 42
The wrong team is favored. Auburn allegedly boasts the far better resume, having gone undefeated in an incredibly strong and deep SEC West while Oregon coasted through a down Pac Ten, excepting Stanford. That’s the assumption anyway, but the two teams’ Sagarin strength of schedules are within four points in the rankings. The other myth surrounds Oregon’s defense. The Ducks are 25th overall…but 8th in yards per play. They rank a "lousy" 56th in pass defense…but 6th in pass efficiency defense and 2nd in turnovers forced. I am not exactly quoting complicated stats here. The pace they play at on offense and the general disdain for Pac Ten defense works against Oregon’s public perception.
I am not about to discount Auburn. The best player in the country plays for them (shades of Vince Young, 2005) and, arguably, the best defensive player does, too (but he doesn’t play in the secondary). Their run through the SEC is an amazing achievement. But if you were to build a team to beat them, that team would look a lot like Oregon, right down to the best punt return game in the nation (Auburn’s punting game reeks). The SEC streak ends here.
by jonestopten on Jan 10, 2011 3:59 PM CST reply actions
The best player on the field (Newton) will touch the ball twice as many times as Oregon’s best player.
VY factor applies here. Similar outcome.
Auburn 38
Oregon 34
by Vasherized on Jan 10, 2011 4:07 PM CST reply actions
I’m leaning toward Darron Thomas outplaying Cam and a Ducks win 37-34. The Aldine product doesn’t get the publicity LaMichael James does but he’s mobile enough to get away from Fairley and has to be loving that terrible Auburn secondary.
by villagehorn on Jan 10, 2011 4:07 PM CST reply actions
Along the lines of what jonestopten said, the last time that public perception caused the point spread to be so wildly divergent from what the numbers and stats said we ended up with Southern Cal favored by a touchdown over Texas.
I’m just sayin’.
by Huckleberry on Jan 10, 2011 4:07 PM CST reply actions
Oregon, please. I can’t stand the SEC circlejerk for another year.
by jc25 on Jan 10, 2011 4:13 PM CST reply actions
Huck, I don’t recall, what number did you have on USC-Texas?
by Bob in Houston on Jan 10, 2011 4:14 PM CST reply actions
Before bowl season, Texas by 1-1/2 (actually 1.46 points if you run the numbers out).
At kickoff, meaning previous bowl games accounted for, Texas by 3 (actually 2.81 points).
Predicted score at kickoff was 43-40 (42.54-39.73). For reals.
by Huckleberry on Jan 10, 2011 4:31 PM CST reply actions
I need Auburn to win to win my office pool. I think Auburn has a better pass offense and that will be the difference. It may take Oregon a quarter and a half to get things going on O and they could be down 17 – 21 points by then. Both defenses will be exhausted by the end of this one. I don’t think Oregon will get many big holes to run through and might have a tough time staying patient.
by KilgoreTrout on Jan 10, 2011 4:45 PM CST reply actions
And if anyone’s curious, the system would have Oregon tonight by a score of 45-36 (45.22-35.90) using the same system.
by Huckleberry on Jan 10, 2011 4:51 PM CST reply actions
it’s Auburn -1 at my book. So who do I go with Huck??!! It’s almost a coin flip, I’d like to just take the 1st half but even that’s tough. Both teams tend to fall behind or play even first 2 quarters then turn it on 2nd half….maybe under 1st half? who knows…
by ballrific on Jan 10, 2011 5:01 PM CST reply actions
I have to agree with Huck’s computer. Oregon has been the better team all year. The wrong team is favored. Ducks by 8, 39-31.

Off topic, but Chris Peterson passes on Stanford job and says he’s staying at Boise and not going anywhere.

Man those Oregon unis are fugly. Feature creep, imo.
by Dagga Roosta on Jan 10, 2011 7:35 PM CST reply actions
Nike sure screwed up the cleats for the turf. They screwed it up for the Rose Bowl, too. I think it was TCU that didn’t take extra cleats because Nike had made the cleats just for the turf…not a good plan.
by java on Jan 10, 2011 7:41 PM CST reply actions
Ok, I know that Phil Knight gives an assload of cash to the Oregon program. But does that give him the right to change the school colors to pewter and neon yellow? There’s barely a trace of green and gold on those things.
by Dagga Roosta on Jan 10, 2011 7:42 PM CST reply actions
Ugly unis. I thought the prototype they showed in Dallas looked better than this one, but they are all ugly.

Insanely risky play by Malzhan there. Neither of these teams can get out of their own way.

Not sure if the Ducks O has had enough time to settle down. Wouldn’t surprise me to see another three-and-out here. But they’ll start scoring soon enough.

I think by the end of this game we’re going to be glad we didn’t end up with Chryst.

Mad Clapper, I would have been happy about Chryst, but I’m ecstatic about Harsin. Harsin just seems very personable, bright, and enthusiastic, and he has a great offense. What a breath of fresh air!

I can’t see Mack ever going for dos like that……
by Patrick Bateman on Jan 10, 2011 8:37 PM CST reply actions
Interesting — going for two doesn’t make much sense —except that Auburn will be thinking “these fuckers will try anything anytime.”
by srr50 on Jan 10, 2011 8:39 PM CST reply actions
I was thinking something like that, srr.
It puts a little pressure on Auburn, if it’s a one score game. Interesting, very interesting. Throw out the tendencies. There aren’t any.

I find it hard to pull for either team. The bullshit surrounded Newton and Auburn reminds me how weak and spineless the NCAA truly is as an organization, but Phl Knight and Nike’s involvement in Oregon is the worst type of evil that has college football headed in the same direction as the shit Nike and Sonny V. brought to us in college basketball.
Is it impossible to have decent turf or shoes for bowl games? Long ago there were screw in cleats and equipment managers weren’t named Serg and made sure your socks and bicep bands match your doo rag.
Newton has a stronger arm than VInce, but watching Cam run in the open field only reinforces to me just how elusive and devastating VY was running the ball.
by Davey O'Brien on Jan 10, 2011 9:04 PM CST reply actions
The Phil Knight/Nike/Oregon connection is very convenient. Is it one of those things that could draw constant NCAA scrutiny, or, is it so big the NCAA would never touch it?
by java on Jan 10, 2011 9:12 PM CST reply actions
Java,
In many industries you have to separate business interest from personal interest.
Name one other school that Nike has thrown that much money behind? Hell, just drop the freaking O and put a swoosh on the helmets.
The NCAA won’t do a damn thing, they haven’t in basketball, they won’t here, and I get more and more where I am ready for some kid to take the NCAA to court and ask for their share of the pie.
On the field Auburn just looks too physical for UO.
by Davey O'Brien on Jan 10, 2011 9:15 PM CST reply actions
Is there any chance UT could get Chizik as HC next year? Cam Newton or not, Auburn is damn good on both sides of the ball.

Nike was founded by University of Oregon track athlete Philip Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman. The connection between Nike and U of Oregon is super tight, familial.
by Kafka on Jan 10, 2011 9:45 PM CST reply actions
Kafka,
Yes, and Bowerman resigned from the Nike Advisory Board to protest his disagreement with how Knight marketed the company and I am pretty damn sure he wouldn’t be too happy with the way Knight has used his company to build the Oregon football program.

You are probably right but he’s been dead since 1999 so…

Oregon has almost no vertical passing game. Everything has been short with RAC except for the big PA pass early in the game. Thomas is doing just enough every drive to make it stall out….
by Patrick Bateman on Jan 10, 2011 9:54 PM CST reply actions
Davey, can you elaborate on how Knight built the O football program? To be perfectly honest, I was only dimly aware of O until this year.

I wasn’t a fan of that 4th down call. 2 of 9 on 3rd downs. We were probably the worst 3rd down offense in Texas history this year.

You mean besides have a sports empire that help build an underground system directing money to AAU basketball teams and in turn direct the top AAU players to certain Nike schools and now help lay the ground work for it to take place in high school football recruiting?
by Davey O'Brien on Jan 10, 2011 10:11 PM CST reply actions
Idiots on Orangebloods now clamoring that Chizik is a better defensive coach than Muschamp. The dumb is strong with us.
by Mad Clapper on Jan 10, 2011 10:12 PM CST reply actions
Davey, I am not aware an underground system to funnel players to Nike schools. But aren’t most schools Nike schools? Not trying to be sarcastic, I really just don’t know anything about this story.
by HornNY on Jan 10, 2011 10:16 PM CST reply actions
Do this, look up Sonny Vaccaro, then read up on George Raveling’s part in this, then do some research on players such as Darrell Arthur, and then do a little reading on Will Lyles.
Find the common thread and then ask yourself if it is just an accident that UO has exploded over the past 10 years and why the NCAA hasn’t gone after them?
by Davey O'Brien on Jan 10, 2011 10:16 PM CST reply actions
HornNY,
I was just trying to address your question of how Phil Knight made a profound difference in the Oregon football program. He has given them more money than any one donor has given to any program including T Boone. He’s Pickens except cool. Also with his business he was able to make Oregon look cool. T Boone can’t do that with his business brand unless he wants to give the Pokes neat looking capes made out of natural gas mining certificates.
From there, Belloti and Kelly were happy to engage in the street agent game and take on some questionable character but highly talented kids…..Now they’re in the NC. But I don’t think anyone really thinks either program is anywhere near clean and I have no idea if Knight fits in anywhere on that spectrum…..

Who deserves more credit: The Chizwhiz for Auburn’s MNC (if they hang on) or Mack Daddy for Texas’ in 2005?

I always liked Chizik D. And Muschamp. I really like how Chizik is just eating up the clock on O. They are very efficient. If you consider what a small private school in Saban country has accomplished, it’s pretty impressive. And yes, maybe they did buy CN. So what. He isn’t a very highly rated QB, he’s just a decent dual threat. They aren’t in this game because of him, let’s put it that way.

Chizik really learned the how-to-not-answer a question response during his time in Austin. Dude is politicking well.

Yeah, this game is a prime reason that I am tiring of college football and have been watching more pro football than ever before.
It was generally very sloppy throughout. One team was hyped to the max to keep the brand going. Both teams will likely find themselves askew of NCAA rules within three years, though neither will face any meaningful penalties for doing so. Another unbeaten team that would give either of these teams a real run for their money is sitting at home. And a kid that once stole a laptop, got kicked out of school, was shopped around for his collegiate abilities, has gone on to win the Heisman and a national title…not to mention his sleazy head coach.
I can wait a while until this all starts again.
Here’s to a long, long summer.

Ducks should have let them score the TD in the end. Fluky lame finish was fluky and lame.

College football would be more above board if it was run by la cosa nostra.

Any danger of Major/Harsin going to Tulsa?
Off topic I know but that game was blah.

I will name my first child Patrick Bateman. Thank you good sir.
I’d read up on that name first. LOL
Or maybe you’re into that stuff.

What the hell was wrong with the turf ???
Waaaaay too many players losing footing and clumps of turf flying all over the place.
Embarrassment for a NC game.

“Idiots on Orangebloods now clamoring that Chizik is a better defensive coach than Muschamp. The dumb is strong with us.”
That was one poster who started that thread. Some agreed with him, others disagreed, vigorously.

So much for my pregame asessment. I didn’t count on Newton being a ground non factor, 3 turnovers in the first 10 minutes, a safety, and a ‘i wasn’t really down get back up and run" tackle.
I predicted an assistant coach’s kid would strip the ball from a receiver on a sideline catch creating chaos. Not my night I guess.
Funny, Blues mentioned the Haliburton tweet on the “clean” program. I’m curious if anyone knows anything about how Dyer went from 195 to 215lbs as a senior in HS to a freshman………….hitting the weights, good genes and protein shakes?
by Saltshaker on Jan 11, 2011 2:32 AM CST reply actions
20 pounds gain in one year is certainly possible for a young kid, especially if his weight training and nutrition improve a bunch and maybe the kid has some natural growth. I went from 160 as a hs soph to 230 as a hs senior without taking PEDs (of course, I also grew 5 inches in that period). When they talk about dirty programs, they are referring more to player, family, and agent payoffs, I think.
Does the NCAA test for steroids?
by Kafka on Jan 11, 2011 7:36 AM CST reply actions
Saltshaker,
Could be that the kid for the first time ever has access to healthy food, money was tight at home, or the S&C coach is Kevin Yoxall and Yox was at TCU with Fran when similar things were seen to happen and still continue.
Trouble is that isn’t uncommon in college sports.

Let’s hear it for the college tradition!
Traditional unis won. (My god those Oregon unis were awful!)
Traditional SEC-style cheating won over new corporate sponsorship style cheating. (But it’s the wave of the future.)
Heisman winner looked pedestrian in big game. (He’s no VY. Hell, he’s no Reggie Bush, either.)
Announcers. (Turned sound down)
Gotta love those traditions.

Just read through your posts here.
Yeah, we get it…this wasn’t Texas-USC 2005, but what game is? If you think this game sucked well, I’m sorry for ya. I get the feeling a lot of people weren’t going to be happy no matter what happened during the game, but it was pretty entertaining.
Also, was Vince Young being benched in favor of Cam Newton last night?
Yeah we get it, Vince is better then Newton. Don’t be so insecure.

Shitty game. People will say it was great beacuase of the score but that was sloppy all around. How do you have a shitty field for the MNC? TCU would have had a great shot against either of those teams and CN is no VY. He choked a short TD pass and overthrew another easy one.
Worth the investment for Auburn but I’m guessing they hold on to this one for about 30 months.
What does CN do now? He proved he’s not an NFL QB and he can’t go back to school.
I agree with some here that because of all the bullshit the NFL is gaining on CFB quickly in my mind. This dirty shit and BCS garbage has gotten more than tiresome.

Newton will make a really nice Tebow in the NFL.

I hope Adams makes Tennessee draft Newton and forces him on Fisher…

The BCS has nothing to do with the NCAA, right? If the NCAA eventually finds out that Auburn violated NCAA rules in 2010-2011, will it have any impact on the BCS championship (i.e. will Auburn be stripped of its title)? Would the title go to Oregon or be vacated like when Bush gave up his Heisman trophy?
