Who is Senor Guano? A stealth Horns recruit from South America? Could be messy if he NCAA flys in……

We can really make hay against their guards if we play within ourselves. Brown and Joseph have advantages on both ends against Harris and Holmes. Have to be careful with Middleton because he’s going to force Hamilton to defend. After that, it’s all on the glass. A stalemate there and we should win with an average shooting night.

I’m looking for improvement on the boards, and a defense that limits 2nd shot opportunities. that will be the recipe for a win in Kansas on Saturday.

Bob Knight will be giving Nathan Walkup a verbal hand job tonight. Bank on it. I love Knight, but it’s classic Bob Knight since he’s gotten into broadcasting. It’s the Dan Dakich rule. He picks the player that closely resembles Dakich and then sings his praises right or wrong for 40 minutes.

Oh, and fuck Vasherized for getting to go to this game. Also, fuck him in general.

Thank God. No Ed Hightower or Jim Burr. My remote will survive.

Run Tristan, Run. Secondary break could be huge, if there’s any to be had.

Wow. We’re running flex with Jordan Hamilton. Rick Barnes has really had a come to jesus.
by Trips Right on Jan 19, 2011 8:12 PM CST reply actions
Texas is using the flex cut by Jordan to clear out the post and Tristan has gotten two easy looks as a result. RRR knows a thing or two about defending the flex.

I feel like, by listening to Bob Knight, you learn so much about the game of basketball and absolutely nothing about the two teams that are actually playing.

jc25, that’s why you write for March to March. To fill in Knight’s gaps.
by Trips Right on Jan 19, 2011 8:18 PM CST reply actions
Did Knight just say Hamilton has committed nothing to the offense? Or were my ears misinformed?

Great pass by J’Covan.
What is Turgeon complaining about? His guys are defending for shit.
by Trips Right on Jan 19, 2011 8:23 PM CST reply actions
Turgeon needs to embrace his inner Ethan from Lost and just string up the ref in the woods.

Wangmene shockingly effective at the high post. UT is out-posting the post team.

The game looks easy when you hit foul shots.
by Trips Right on Jan 19, 2011 8:29 PM CST reply actions
I think Hamilton is taking mini-mind vacations on the defensive end. Surprised we haven’t seen a shot of Rick yelling in rage.

Middleton doesn’t have to guard as long as Balbay’s in the game.

I like GJ shooting the open 15 footer, but you don’t need it that early in the shot clock.
Texas’ outside shot is all kinds of off tonight.
by jc25 on Jan 19, 2011 8:41 PM CST reply actions
If Matt Hill still had his jewfro, he wouldn’t have been confused with Nathan Walkup right there.
by jc25 on Jan 19, 2011 8:44 PM CST reply actions
After watching those nice flex cuts and triangle sets early in the game, seeing a ball screen actually irritated me.
by RRR on Jan 19, 2011 8:44 PM CST reply actions
RRR, you’re right. I like how Brown is trying to direct traffic though. We need to augment it with more running instead of more ballscreens.

Middleton’s a really good ballplayer. He’s Jordan Hamilton light, but he’s got a better floor game.
by Trips Right on Jan 19, 2011 8:54 PM CST reply actions
Knight: “I’m not sure I like that shot.” Oh really? You don’t like a wide-open 3 from your best shooter with his footwork set?
by jc25 on Jan 19, 2011 8:54 PM CST reply actions
It must be opposite day. Coach Knight says he likes J’Covan??? Knight would have kicked him off his team last year.
by Art Vandelay on Jan 19, 2011 8:56 PM CST reply actions
7 rebounds for Jordan. I’d like to see him fake the 3 more often and shoot the jumper off one bounce or drive and dish. He could easily get 4 or 5 assists/game. It would also force defenders to close under control instead of selling out to stop the 4. Jordan’s been having a lot of turnovers lately because he gets in a hurry (i.e. out of control).
It is amazing how well they get the ball into the post this year.

by godzillatron on Jan 19, 2011 9:15 PM CST reply actions
Kafka, it’s easy to set up the post when you force the defense to allocate help to cutters. It’s what you’ve been calling for for going on two years. The screener is the toughest player to help to.
by Trips Right on Jan 19, 2011 9:16 PM CST reply actions
I don’t think it can be underestimated how beneficial it’s been for Tristan Thompson to be playing with three other upperclassmen big men to learn from. Dude is getting more fundamentally sound.
I contrast this to watching Terrence Jones last night, who is starting to look lost on the court as teams catch up to his skill level and game plan for him.
by jc25 on Jan 19, 2011 9:16 PM CST reply actions
This team gets stronger as the game goes on. Like I said earlier, if they box out on defense and limit 2nd shot opportunities, and play smart offense, they will go a long way in the Tourny.
by Texoz on Jan 19, 2011 9:22 PM CST reply actions
UT still has bad spacing at times and takes too long to reset. But that should improve through league play.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 19, 2011 9:30 PM CST reply actions
As impressive as the freshmen are and as improved as Hamilton is, I think J’Covan may be the most improved Longhorn. He has put on muscle, keeps his head in the game, passes are cleaner & crisp, and doesn’t lose his composure. Wangmene is in the running for most improved as well, blocking, shooting, body control. Todd Wright has done a good job with him, too.
Hook ’em!
by java on Jan 19, 2011 9:31 PM CST reply actions
Wangmene’s footwork and hands have improved quite a bit since the beginning of the season.
Watching his FT, it seems his developed a better touch on his shot. He could be a nice offensive weapon next season if he keeps improving.

A&M completely unprepared to deal with adversity on the road. Prior to this, only true road game was at OU, against the worst team in the Big 12. Uhh, yeah. Not saying we’ll win against KU, but I bet those early season tilts in Greensboro and Flint will have gone a long way.
by jc25 on Jan 19, 2011 9:33 PM CST reply actions
Art, it depends on who they hire as AD. Supposed to be announced March 1. Tech really doesn’t have the $$ to fire Pat, and he won’t resign. It’s a shitty situation. I’d like to see him coach at least next year, but we’ll see.

As they were saying on the broadcast, UT made a serious effort to work the ball into the paint.
The result? 57% shooting. 29/51
The way we played tonight there are very few teams that will beat us.
by Texoz on Jan 19, 2011 10:11 PM CST reply actions
Well, that certainly was fun.
I thought the first 5 minutes of each half really set the tone for the game. We didn’t rush, but we did push the ball when given the opportunity. Why A&M would even pretend to pressure our guards coming up is beyond me.
Great off the ball defense, very little separation, and we did an excellent job of rebounding. I am astounded by the improvement we have seen in Wagmene, really impressive. Our inside-out game was outstanding, and really glad to hear that TT just had a cramp.
I think Kansas is at one level and everyone else in the league is a notch below, but I have no doubts that we will at least go in there sharp and ready to play.
by srr50 on Jan 19, 2011 10:36 PM CST reply actions
The shooting efficiency of the UT front line was insane: Gary hit 6 of 9, Jordan hit 10 of 14, and Tristan hit 8 of 12. UT out rebounded the aggies by 8 but this was a bit misleading because the horns had a lot more defensive rebound opportunities. The aggies actually had 4 more offensive rebounds than the horns. It was great to see Jordan shooting more 2 pointers, lately he had been focusing too much on 3 point shots.
I’d like to see Wangmene get more minutes than Hill. Hill has the higher basketball IQ but Wangmene has more talent and athleticism.
Amazing free throw shooting tonight.
Like to see Tristan post up less and come outside and screen more. He is just too quick for almost any center to stay with. I’m pretty sure Tristan could even put it on the floor outside and drive and finish with few problems. Why not open up the lane wide open?

Went to this one, sat up in the nosebleeds. Surrounded by Aggies and hoo boy THAT was fun. Got tired of their silly whooping so during Aggy free throws I started yelling “aggyaggyaggyaggyaggyaggyaggyaggySHEEP!”. They ignored me…but I could feel the pain in their silence. Ha.
As far as the game goes, what struck me the most was not just that the team tried to score in the paint, but that they did it through the offense – it wasn’t just simple feeds into the post, but Tristan or Gary working screens away from the ball and getting wide open a few feet from the hoop. That plus some absurd displays of body control when driving into defenders. Plus free throws. Plus holding our own on the boards. Play that way in Lawrence and we’ve got a great shot to win.

If I’m a college coach, first thing I do today is call Jerry Sloan. If one off-season with him can turn a decade of mediocre (at best) offense into what I saw last night, hanging out with Sloan is a helluva career move.

We get real offenses for both football and basketball in 2011. Hallelujah, holy shit.
by nordberg on Jan 20, 2011 8:46 AM CST reply actions
I’m going to miss Gary when he graduates.
He’s gone from maybe never playing basketball again as a freshman due to heart issues, to becoming a beast on defense with a sweet touch just outside the paint. His hustle is only second to Balbay’s, He doesn’t get a lot of press, but he deserves a lot of credit for this year’s success.
Would not be surprised if a few tears are shed when he plays his last home game. For someone that was once thought to have a faulty heart, he’s given all of it, and more, to UT.

You’ve also seen it with players who play exactly 3 tough games a year (think Miami in the 1980’s vs. the Big East). However, you haven’t seen that offense run with personnel cobbled together out of parts from the Island of Misfit Toys.
