Awesome start, I do prefer starting in a 10-0 hole.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 3:17 PM CST reply actions

Well that was a fantastic start.

by spit and tears on Jan 22, 2011 3:17 PM CST reply actions

I don’t like our chances if KU shoots 100% at the 3 point line.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 3:20 PM CST reply actions

I also don’t like our chances if we shoot 11% from the field. Defense has settled down, just need a shot or two to fall now and we’ll hopefully be alright.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 3:25 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton’s ADD kicked in. He gave away five points by wandering into the paint.

by Bob in Houston on Jan 22, 2011 3:27 PM CST reply actions

“Texas misses three shots from point-blank range.”

I have heard that before.

by spit and tears on Jan 22, 2011 3:30 PM CST reply actions

If Jordan can’t get in a groove, I don’t think this will get any better. J’Covan is the only one that seems to not be bothered by the atmosphere.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 3:35 PM CST reply actions

We’re fine.

by Trips Right on Jan 22, 2011 3:39 PM CST reply actions

Get a few freebies and suddenly they look a little more comfortable on both ends.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 3:40 PM CST reply actions

Brown needs at least 25 minutes in this game.

Gary can’t find his shot.

by Vasherized on Jan 22, 2011 3:42 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton, Joseph and Johnson are a combined 3-16.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 3:46 PM CST reply actions

Turnover on our final 4 possessions of the half.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 3:54 PM CST reply actions

We look like a bunch of intimidated freshmen….stupid turnovers and sloppy play all around…..oh, and Doge and Hill CAN’T be in this game together

by marqroid on Jan 22, 2011 3:55 PM CST reply actions

That’s not a travel.

by Trips Right on Jan 22, 2011 3:56 PM CST reply actions

Not the one to make excuses but the officiating really is chit

by Me on Jan 22, 2011 3:58 PM CST reply actions

Apparently the ref told Rick that J’Covan dribbled behind his back and that’s why he made the traveling call. If he really thought that then shouldn’t he have called double dribble?

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 4:00 PM CST reply actions

Love all the travel calls.

by Beaux Jackson on Jan 22, 2011 4:02 PM CST reply actions

dribbling behind your back isn’t a fucking travel.

by Vasherized on Jan 22, 2011 4:03 PM CST reply actions

TT has quickly passed Hamilton as the best player on our team.

The basic difference b/t KU and Texas over the years is 5 good players against 2-3 good players. They are just deeper year in year out.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 22, 2011 4:03 PM CST reply actions

  1. for KU travels almost every time he touches the ball (isn’t called), and shoves our players under the basket when doesn’t have the ball. Watch him for a couple of possessions.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 22, 2011 4:07 PM CST reply actions

I’m not sure he didn’t walk, Trips, but he still shouldn’t have done it.

Now, do we get the great assist because of his court vision if he can’t do the behind-the-back? I dunno.

They can get back in this thing if they keep the defense going and start shooting it. But it’s remarkable how much this game looks like the game on Wednesday.

by Bob in Houston on Jan 22, 2011 4:08 PM CST reply actions

I rewinded it 3 times on my DVR and he did J’travel. When I saw it live I didn’t think he did, but there were three (very quick) steps.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 22, 2011 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Perhaps we could trade Gary of today for Gary of Wednesday real quick?

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Gary Johnson please wake the fuck up

by Mysterious Package on Jan 22, 2011 4:19 PM CST reply actions

The 4-on-1 needs some work.

by AKHorn on Jan 22, 2011 4:20 PM CST reply actions

26 points with 15 min left?

by Mysterious Package on Jan 22, 2011 4:20 PM CST reply actions

Kansas not taking the golden opportunity to step on the throat early in the 2nd half. They’re not bad shots unless you miss them.

by Neon on Jan 22, 2011 4:22 PM CST reply actions

Gary Johnson is killing us.

by Trips Right on Jan 22, 2011 4:25 PM CST reply actions

Gary Johnson needs to slow it down offensively and when he gets the ball . . . give it up.

Clark Kellogg is getting on my nerves.

by AKHorn on Jan 22, 2011 4:25 PM CST reply actions

Gary Johnson!

by Beaux Jackson on Jan 22, 2011 4:25 PM CST reply actions

My Hamilton, Joseph and Johnson watch is now at 3-20 from the field.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 4:25 PM CST reply actions

Gary Johnson with an epic meltdown

by Mysterious Package on Jan 22, 2011 4:26 PM CST reply actions

I think Gary found a gas station in kansas that sells 4 Loko and he decided to down some before the game. He’s playing like he’s hopped up on caffeine and simultaneously drunk.

by marqroid on Jan 22, 2011 4:27 PM CST reply actions

Why is balbay still in

by Mysterious Package on Jan 22, 2011 4:27 PM CST reply actions

That’s the weakest fucking tech I’ve ever seen called.

by Trips Right on Jan 22, 2011 4:29 PM CST reply actions

by Neon on Jan 22, 2011 4:29 PM CST reply actions

The ref with the Rick Perry haircut has it out for Hamilton.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 22, 2011 4:29 PM CST reply actions

Bull shit call on the T. Clark, STFU.

by AKHorn on Jan 22, 2011 4:29 PM CST reply actions

Unbelievable. I always assumed that there was cussing on the basketball court at the NCAA level.

by Diego on Jan 22, 2011 4:29 PM CST reply actions

Rabbit ears tech by an official that’s had it out for us the entire game.

by Trips Right on Jan 22, 2011 4:30 PM CST reply actions

by bboroshaff on Jan 22, 2011 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Hill’s been killing them on the boards.

by Bob in Houston on Jan 22, 2011 4:50 PM CST reply actions

You’ve gotten a ton of questionable calls this half Trips… These refs are horrible.

by Neon on Jan 22, 2011 4:50 PM CST reply actions

Neon, that’s horse shit.

by Trips Right on Jan 22, 2011 4:51 PM CST reply actions

Agreed, Diego. Hill’s positioning is superb. (Although I still hold my breath every time he touches it.)

by AKHorn on Jan 22, 2011 4:52 PM CST reply actions

Whatever man, your blog. Texas has shot more than 2x the number of free throws, despite the majority of KU’s possessions being in the paint. Explain.

by Neon on Jan 22, 2011 4:53 PM CST reply actions

LOL that was awesome

by maninblack on Jan 22, 2011 4:53 PM CST reply actions

j’blow me neon, refs have sucked

Don’t bring that crap in the lane Neon.

by Trips Right on Jan 22, 2011 4:54 PM CST reply actions

good foul

by eloy on Jan 22, 2011 4:55 PM CST reply actions

You guys rode the crowd for the first 7 minutes. Now you’re just getting outplayed.

by Beaux Jackson on Jan 22, 2011 4:55 PM CST reply actions

Ha. I agree the refs are terrible and there have been fortuitous calls for KU but if you think Texas isn’t getting the better of it…

by Neon on Jan 22, 2011 4:55 PM CST reply actions

Fuck yeah boys.

I’ll take the technical

by maninblack on Jan 22, 2011 4:55 PM CST reply actions

No idea how that was a shooting foul :)

Port Arthur,,son

by maninblack on Jan 22, 2011 5:00 PM CST reply actions

KU isn’t going to the hole? Are you even watching the game? You need to see a shot chart?

by Neon on Jan 22, 2011 5:01 PM CST reply actions

If you are talking about the Matt Hill play, correct. It wasn’t a travel. Kept his pivot foot.

I realize you aren’t used to getting outplayed at home…. but it isn’t the refs my man.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 22, 2011 5:01 PM CST reply actions

What you know bout them Port Arthur boys

jcovan, murdering it

by eloy on Jan 22, 2011 5:02 PM CST reply actions

I’m not blaming the refs, you guys were. I was agreeing they were terrible but pointing out you guys were getting more than your share of the calls…

Wow.

by Beaux Jackson on Jan 22, 2011 5:04 PM CST reply actions

It’s almost time to play The Number, which friends of mine came up with. Basically, how many more points does Texas need to win this game?

Is 70 enough?

by Bob in Houston on Jan 22, 2011 5:04 PM CST reply actions

Joseph banked in that 3 from the Northern Territories.

by Vasherized on Jan 22, 2011 5:04 PM CST reply actions

by maninblack on Jan 22, 2011 5:05 PM CST reply actions

Refs aren’t good, but to say we are getting MORE than our share is just idiotic.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 22, 2011 5:05 PM CST reply actions

Oh. Sorry. I forgot about those 3’s.

Damn what a second half. Best half defense, offense and HEART by the team in 3 years !!!
Kudos to Rick Barnes for his game management until the last minute and that issue with Hamilton. No other play/pass .
The guard tandem of Brown/ Joseph is great. Matt Hill was tough as hell. The players showed a lot of poise and Brown/Hamilton did not flinch an inch from any rock chalk……..
Comeback , Best one in Texas history ??? Damn great game for our players.

I refuse to believe that happened at AFH. I’ve watched or been at almost every game over the past 10 years and never heard it. I’ll check with someone that was at the game but I would put money on you misinterpreting the CBS feed.

One of the many great things to come out of that game. The idea of using JH on the ball to milk the clock and get a shot at the end of the game. He got two buckets and an assist with less than 5 on the clock on three straight possessions in the last 3 minutes. That has been our weekness at the end of halfs and games and I’ve always wondered why we put the ball in JB or CJ hands instead of Hamilton. Hamilton can get a shot whenever he wants it and frankly he is probably our 2nd best passer. Hopefully, that will close that door and the pass to TT at the end won’t bother Barnes too much.

Just an incredible win. Congrats Horns.

by Bartoncreek on Jan 22, 2011 5:41 PM CST reply actions

It’s amazing what a team can do with talent and a structured offense – Rick, you should’ve asked Bobby that question 5 years ago! Hook ’em on the best regular season road win in Horn history!

by UT Bondman on Jan 22, 2011 5:43 PM CST reply actions

Great rebounding by Jordan and Cory, with 9 each.
Tristan had 5 blocks.
Great interior defense by Tristan and Matt Hill.
Great defense on Selby by Balbay and Cory.
J’clutch shooting by J’Covan.
Great free throw shooting by Jordan and J’Covan.

This horns team has no quit, you have to keep making plays for 40 minutes to beat them.
Amazing victory that I’m going to watch more than once.

Is it too much to say that this is one of the biggest non-tourny wins in UT basketball history?

Great game between two good teams and a big win for us. Thanks for the graciousness, Neon.

In a weird way I think Rick would have loved it if Tristan would have thrown down with him. You can’t be a pussy and play for Rick Barnes and I think Thompson may have actually earned some points there.

I’m drunk. Replace Tristan with Jordan and Thompson with Hamilton.

I can totally buy into that, but I doubt Hamilton – who can be narcissistic to begin with — feels that way. I also didn’t like that Barnes mentions everyone on his radio interview except Hamilton.

texas with the more talented team. thompson, hamilton, brown, joseph all nba players. texas also more battle tested going into the game. it paid off.

by elmer f. on Jan 22, 2011 6:15 PM CST reply actions

I saw a couple of really good things from the Barns-Hamilton blow up. Cory stepped in right away and essentially told Barnes he would handle it and he moved Jordan away and calmed him down. Great leadership from the freshman.

Then when Tristin went to the line and got the first one to drop J’Covan went over to him and joked with him about making it, keeping Tristin loose. Brown also looked over at the bench and smile as if to say, “see, it’s okay, Tristin can’t miss ’em all.”

by srr50 on Jan 22, 2011 6:17 PM CST reply actions

Texas shot better than KU for field goals (46% to 36%), 3 pointers (46% to 32%) and free throws (81% to 61%). Even though the game was at KU, the horns (mainly J’Covan, Jordan, and Tristan) got to the iine way more than KU (31 to 18). The horns out rebounded KU 40 to 33, even though KU had 4 more offensive rebounds.

by Kafka on Jan 22, 2011 6:18 PM CST reply actions

I’m sure that Rick was pissed at Hamilton for passing to Thompson in that situation and probably blurted out a WTF are you doing. To which Hamilton gave him a WTF else could I do? I have to agree with Hamilton in that situation. Nice that TT sank them both.

I went out to the truck to listen to XM to hear Barnes’ post game hoping to hear an explanation. I was dissapointed to hear nothing mentioned and also was dissappointed with the lack of recognition of Hamilton’s game by Rick.

Poor form Rick. Don’t turn into the asshole that crashed and burned the season last year afrer the biggest win of the season this year.

Hamilton played a hell of a game, imo.

by jinx on Jan 22, 2011 6:19 PM CST reply actions

srr50,

Best part of that (aside from TT hitting both) was Corey telling Barnes and Hamilton to both shut up. It was stated last year and before this season that we needed someone that would be the team spokesman when Barnes lost his shit. Seems like someone even thought that CJ could do it.

Hopefully CJ can be that guy like TJ and DJ were before him. This team has the chance to be really good. Chemistry is in top form right now. I would hate to see another nose dive like last year.

team will be sick for years to come. this team finally has legit talent at all positions. and think about the backcourt talent next year – kabongo, jospeh with brown off the bench. just ridiculous.

by elmer f. on Jan 22, 2011 6:48 PM CST reply actions

ESPN3 is not your friend when the game was on CBS.

That was as ballsy of a win as i can remember from the Horns…ever. Down 16 early they kept battling despite shooting like shit in the first half. And every time it seemed as if they were going to close within single digits, they did something stupid on O. But they never got down and kept attacking. Awesome. J’Covan was money, TT was a warrior, Joseph played like a senior, and Hamilton stepped up when needed. Matt Hill was the unsung hero, battling the Morris’s inside all day and getting a ton of tough boards. Just a fantastic win all around and one that can kick off a run through conference play and into the tournament that can lead to very good things. Hopefully Barnes and Hamilton rectify whatever issue they had at the end of the game and we keep this train rolling.

Makes me forget the 2010 football season even happened.

by Mr. Orange on Jan 22, 2011 6:54 PM CST reply actions

It’s really nice to have a consistent, coherent offensive scheme for the boys to execute and they have taken to it very quickly. They also stay with it even when the shit is falling on them so heavy they need hard hats because they have confidence that it works. Of coures the D doesn’t suck, but we’ve always known Rick could teach that. A major flaw in our basketball program has been permanently fixed, boys and girls!

Oh and we’re about 35 for our last 40 or so at the stripe, or something like that—-who woulda thunk it?

by Hank The Plank on Jan 22, 2011 7:00 PM CST reply actions

Congratulations Texas, you guys outplayed us even after the game should have been over in the first half. Excellent composure by one side! That loss hurts because that was KU’s one chance to legitimize it’s season. Baylor and KSU can be blamed for that as from here on out we only have games we should win or are embarrassing losses. I still think KU wins the conference, but who knows and it doesn’t really matter. We only, and way unfairly, get judged by our performance in the NCAA tournament. I want a rematch, maybe we get one in the conference tournament.

by Scooby Sanchez Jr. on Jan 22, 2011 7:07 PM CST reply actions

I love KU-Texas win or lose. The amount of talent, energy, coaching-ability, and epic moments make this one of the premier match ups in college hoops.

re: the Hamilton-Barnes argument. the intent was for JH to get the ball back to JB on the inbounds. KU effectively cut that off with the trap, so JH made a good decision to get the ball across the timeline. as JH moves up the court you can see JB begin to pout b/c he didn’t get the ball as planned what he should have done was hustle up the court behind Jordan. He didn’t so when Jordan stopped his dribble, he looked back and Jcovan wasn’t across halfcourt yet, so he did all he could do and passed to TT.

all that to say, i put it on Brown for leaving JH in a tight spot and I think Barnes will see that when he watches the film. Jordan to his credit seemed to stay respectful as he argued his case. it wasn’t a great interactiion but so much better than last year.

oh and if you watch the game off the ball, you could make a legit argument for matt hill as player of the game.

Agree on the Matt Hill comment. He was huge down in the paint for us for most of the second half. Played outstanding defense and rebounded the ball very well!

by Greg on Jan 22, 2011 11:02 PM CST reply actions

ZOMG I second Matt Hill for PotG!!

Well OK kinda. Hard to give it to a guy with a zero point, four board stat line, I know. Anyone would have told me before the season that Matt Hill would be playing 20 minutes against KU and I’d have mewled like a toddler with a busted lip. But the dude took an impossible matchup, often without the help of a double-team, and straight up made Marcus Morris look like crap. Stayed on his feet, kept his arms up, with quick lateral movement to stay between his man and the basket, and he made his man work hard and shoot over him every time. Picture-perfect technique. Marcus simply couldn’t handle it: after a decent start he became the black hole in the KU offense and dropped to 6-17 from the field overall. And their whole offensive game plan broke to pieces.

Great call from Barnes to keep Hill in there during the critical stretch in the 2nd. Hill’s KU film should be shown to every undersized unathletic power forward in the country…and everyone with Kansas on their schedule.

“Where are those from last year calling for Rick Barnes head?”

I was not one of those calling for Rick’s head.

Nevertheless, this is a short-sighted, disingenuous cheap shot given that he did a really, really shitty job last year. The team’s implosion was embarrassing, and it was on him. To his immense credit, he realized that he did a shitty job and worked his ass off to fix things between seasons.

by Woody Bombay on Jan 22, 2011 11:26 PM CST reply actions

General – gotta put the ‘90 Purdue tourney win above this one (Panama Myers buzzer-beating block) above this one, maybe the next game where we sacked a 4-loss Xavier team on the way to the Elite Eight. Also, the win against Michigan State in the Elite Eight with Ford/Mouton/Ivey/Boddicker. But I can’t think of another off the top of my head. I mean, we came back from a horrid start to club an undefeated Kansas team like a baby seal. In Phog Allen Fieldhouse, to boot, ending a 69-game home win streak. Most teams don’t have a win like that in their entire history.

by Dagga Roosta on Jan 22, 2011 11:36 PM CST reply actions

Woody,

Yes, he has made some major changes from last year, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You do not win at the college level with an all freshman backcourt. Name a team that’s done it and the list will be very short. The maturation process from last year to this for JH and JB is like night and day. And anyone who thinks there hasn’t been huge upgrade with Tristan Thompson is kidding themselves. Last year’s team just wasn’t that good. Barnes is and always has been a good coach and recruiter.

by Groundhog Day on Jan 23, 2011 12:08 AM CST reply actions

He has also been an incomplete coach. Not anymore.

Definitely Top 5 regular season. Can’t recall any more daunting task that knocking off a #5 KU at their place. There are four or five arenas that are the toughest to play at, i.e. Duke, Carolina, etc.

Winning in those arenas when those teams are in the Top 5 ranks as a Top 5 regular season win for UT.

Top 5 all time? Maybe. My memory is good enough to pull up comparables, but if it’s not Top 5 all time, it’s close.

by Texoz on Jan 23, 2011 9:34 AM CST reply actions

And my typing isn’t that good either. Meant to say “My memory ISN’T good enough….”

by Texoz on Jan 23, 2011 9:35 AM CST reply actions

That just doesnt happen to a top five Kansas team at home. Ever. Thats why they are Kansas and have the championships and the winning streaks.

Not sure that really hurts KU all that much as most teams do not have the horses to exploit KUs weaknesses, but it was a huge validation of this team and the Barnes offseason remake.

Hamilton is just light years ahead of last year in terms of basketball IQ. I have no problem with the exchange with Barnes, just heat of battle stuff from two very competitive guys.

Given who this was and how it went down I dont think you can come up with a bigger regular season win for Texas.

by bullzak on Jan 23, 2011 9:50 AM CST reply actions

The victory over KU was not only one of the biggest regular season wins ever for the horns but was back to back with a very impressive blowout win over a top 10 ranked aggy team. When have the horns had two such impressive back to back wins during the regular season? How high up does UT move up in the polls now?

hippie:
Great explanation of Barnes blowing up at Hamilton. Sounds like Barnes probably screwed up but I wonder if, after Jordan could not get the ball to Brown, Barnes wanted Jordan to keep the ball until he was fouled? In any event, in tense situations, Barnes sometimes lets his emotions get the best of him.

So far, it looks like the decision to redshirt Chapman has really worked out great. Hill and Wangmene have benefited from the extra minutes of playing and more practice reps and have improved significantly this season.

Hill looked leaner but physically stronger than the Morris he was defending and blocking out (another tribute to Todd Wright).

here’s a quote from www.Texas Sports.com from JH after the game. Whatever they siad to each other, it’s apparently not an issue, and Brown has stepped up his game substantially since hid dust up with Rick and time on the pine that resulted. The quote:

“They came in on fire,” said Jordan Hamilton, who had 17 points for the Longhorns. “Then we came out in the second half and we played hard and coach (Rick Barnes) always said we are going to win this game.”
