Two UT Athletes: Brothers At Heart
Mike Finger of the Houston Chronicle has a great story today that catches up on two current UT athletes who have dealt with serious heart ailments.
Every once in a while it’s good to remind ourselves that the games we love do not totally define those who play them.

Great article (Mike Finger is actually of the SA Express News). I hadn’t seen Nader in a while and damn it is impressive he has managed to not only get/stay in shape, but drop all of that weight that he no longer needed. I hadn’t ever heard that story about him trying to workout with the team when he first got to UT and collapsing again. Also hadn’t heard anything about the bee sting the first time around.
McWhorter telling Mack that Nadar had died brings a chill down the spine. Scary stuff. It is great that he has been able continue to contribute to the team after all he has been through.

Finger pulls “double duty” and gets a byline in the Chronicle as well as the S.A. Express-News.
I have a feeling that Johnson and Nader will find that their connection lasts longer than their stay on the 40 Acres.

This is the kind of post that no one will comment on, but everyone should read.
Makes me glad that they make us sit down every year and review CPR and AED procedures as HS coaches. Hate doing it! But glad we do.

Express-News and Chronicle sports staffs have pretty much been combined into one bureau, at least insofar as coverage of statewide college athletics and pro sports are concerned.
Outstanding article. I’d all but forgotten about Nader. I won’t again.

wow, that is a powerful article. great to hear how well nader is doing, and how dedicated his is to helping others with heart conditions.
and horncasting is right, the part about mcwhorter getting the phone call was disturbing. ive received that same type of call before, thats a feeling i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy.

Very well done. Thanks for giving this moving write-up a nationwide audience. The best to both these fine young men. Long life to lifelong Longhorns!

Who did MacWhorter get the call from, Chip Brown?

nordberg, FTW!
Also, as a public service announcement, those AED machines are really simple to use. There are at least two here where I work (one by each bathroom). Do yourself a favor, and find out where the nearest one is at your place of business. If you don’t have one, encourage management to get one.
Matt Nader had parents who were doctors, but most of us wouldn’t be so fortunate. So, spend a few minutes learning the procedure if someone goes into cardiac arrest.
1) Check to see if they’re breathing, if not… continue
2) Start doing chest compressions, about 100 per minute.
3) Yell for someone to call 911
4) Get a different person to fetch the AED
5) Remove their shirt, bra, etc., and apply the AED pads where it shows you in the diagram, and press the start button. It will give you directions as you are using it.

Great find, srr. I linked it in my Horns bball post yesterday. Truly a must-read.

Magnus just attempted to jump-start three perfectly healthy young women.
