Texas vs. Kansas State Open Thread
If we can stop Steve Henson, and if Coach Barnes can once again hold off Lon Kruger, we have a chance.

Saturday was one of my biggest down days for sports in years, yet here I am again…sure hope they don’t crush me again.

She’s more than just a pretty face atop a banging body, that’s for sure.

God Frank Martin is a moron. Why have Pullen guard Balbay 30 feet from the basket?
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:14 PM CST reply actions
First entry pass to drop step dunk I’ve seen in two weeks. We do it against KSU but not against CU, wtf?
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:15 PM CST reply actions
Good use of Balbay as a screener. No hedge help, easy bucket for CJ
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:15 PM CST reply actions
Look good early. running our stuff on offense looking to get the ball inside, defensively our helpside is active including Jordan which is huge.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:18 PM CST reply actions
3 paint looks for TT in five minutes. On pace for 24 for the game.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:22 PM CST reply actions
wisconsinhorny, you called it. Alexi is playing great in space as a help defender.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:36 PM CST reply actions
Hamilton’s taking a lot of bad shots. Needs to let the game come to him.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:38 PM CST reply actions
Trips, they can help Hamilton out with a few more designed plays to get him involved.
by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 8:41 PM CST reply actions
AKHorn, true. We’ve established TT some in the paint, so some counters to Hamilton off of that would be productive.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:42 PM CST reply actions
Two horrible shots in a row. Just fucking wow.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:45 PM CST reply actions
Three possessions in a row without a paint touch. Who’s running the show here?
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:46 PM CST reply actions
Yep. He looks to me like he’s really pressing and it seems to snowball. He’ll make a really dumb play and then follow it up with another. He just really looks tight out there.
by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 8:52 PM CST reply actions
Defense has been good, but it seems like it tends to fall apart after the offense becomes stagnant. Last few minutes of the first half are pretty important for their confidence.
by Diego on Feb 28, 2011 8:52 PM CST reply actions
I can’t wait for Myck Kabongo to get to campus. This crap kills me because it’s so elementary. When you have two lottery picks in your front court, play the game inside to out. Not catch and shoot.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 8:53 PM CST reply actions
Has Hamilton hit a wall physically? Or mentally? Killing us in all these losses.
by Nickel Rover on Feb 28, 2011 8:54 PM CST reply actions
Damn good question, Nickel. Is there a shrink in the house?
by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 8:56 PM CST reply actions
Looks like Hamilton is just pressing a little bit. Hit a little bit of a shooting slump and is trying a bit too hard. He’s just overthinking and not letting the game come to him. As his confidence has waned so has this team’s. It’s his team so he needs to shake out of the funk.
Tristan’s had a great game and has really carried us……
by Patrick Bateman on Feb 28, 2011 8:59 PM CST reply actions
We can high low Kansas State with Matt Hill and Jai Lucas in the game but we can’t do it against 4 guards up 15 at CU. At least we made the adjustment.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:00 PM CST reply actions
Last timeout before the half J’Covan wasn’t even in the huddle. Stayed out on the edge and went to his seat before huddle broke. He’s really pouting.
by New Braunfels Horn on Feb 28, 2011 9:05 PM CST reply actions
It doesn’t seem like any of Hamilton or Brown’s shots have been in rhythm.
by jinx on Feb 28, 2011 9:05 PM CST reply actions
3-22 FG combined between Hamilton/Brown/Joseph/Johnson.
All we need is one of these guys to get hot and we should pull away in the 2nd half if we continue to compete on defense.
by UT_64 on Feb 28, 2011 9:07 PM CST reply actions
As dominating inside as TT has been, there’s no reason to stop jamming it inside to him. We could maybe get Hamilton feeling good about himself by popping him for a kick-out once KS collapses. We may lose a few on the boards but Barnes has got to find a way to get Hamilton engaged.
by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 9:09 PM CST reply actions
Well using the same argument, if Pullen gets hot we’re in trouble.
by Diego on Feb 28, 2011 9:10 PM CST reply actions
Out of those I’ll pick Johnson at this point. Hamilton first runner up. I had a similar thought, Pullen may get hot in the second half, but so could Hamilton.
by jinx on Feb 28, 2011 9:11 PM CST reply actions
Balbay + Lucas = 8 points
Hamilton + Brown + Johnson + Joseph = 7 points
by UT_64 on Feb 28, 2011 9:16 PM CST reply actions
Pullen has 4 points at halftime. My guess is that he gets at least 10 in the 2nd half.
Tristan has 18 points at halftime. KSU will surely double him in the second unless Frank Martin is a rage addled psycho.
Lately UT played much better in the first half than the second half. If that happens tonight, UT is in trouble.
by Kafka on Feb 28, 2011 9:18 PM CST reply actions
Balbay and Lucas outscored Hamilton, Brown, Joseph and Johnson. Texas can’t win that way.
by Bob in Houston on Feb 28, 2011 9:19 PM CST reply actions
I’m optimistic about the 2nd half. Law of averages tells me Hamilton/Brown/Johnson/Joseph can’t possibly be this unproductive.
by UT_64 on Feb 28, 2011 9:20 PM CST reply actions
I haven’t seen the Horns play a good second half in awhile, so hopefully the close game inspires them to step it up this time.
Man I hope TT is here next year. Three Canucks on the Court? Awesome.
by Canuck Horn on Feb 28, 2011 9:21 PM CST reply actions
WFT is going on with Hamilton?
Great start for the Horns.
by Texoz on Feb 28, 2011 9:21 PM CST reply actions
Does Barnes kill a live chicken at halftime or something and totally horrify and take the life out of the team?
by nobis60 on Feb 28, 2011 9:22 PM CST reply actions
I can’t wait for Dogus to graduate. Seriously, a top 10 team has to have a point guard that isn’t terrified by a ten footer.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:23 PM CST reply actions
Pullen has figured out not to guard Dogus. Now sagging to keep the ball away from the post….
by Patrick Bateman on Feb 28, 2011 9:24 PM CST reply actions
We need to get a bucket this half. Man, we can’t buy a bucket.
by java on Feb 28, 2011 9:25 PM CST reply actions
Finally ball reversal from the post and we get a good look for a basket…..
by Patrick Bateman on Feb 28, 2011 9:26 PM CST reply actions
That will help. I hope Barnes is taping the game and hears Knight’s comment.
by java on Feb 28, 2011 9:26 PM CST reply actions
Balbay could at least drive sometimes
by Mysterious Package on Feb 28, 2011 9:27 PM CST reply actions
The second Rick eschewed an up and down attack is the second he needs to make Doge a specialist off the bench. Balbay is by far, the worst halfcourt point guard in the top 25.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:28 PM CST reply actions
Then who do you put at point the rest of the year, Trips?
by java on Feb 28, 2011 9:29 PM CST reply actions
TT needs a touch every damn possession from here til the end.
by nobis60 on Feb 28, 2011 9:30 PM CST reply actions
They can’t handle Thompson inside. Just keep pounding.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:30 PM CST reply actions
Do they give out free samples of Ambien at the Drum?
by Texoz on Feb 28, 2011 9:30 PM CST reply actions
This game needs a serious dose of White Swan JCB – hopefully he hasn’t entered full pout mode.
by nobis60 on Feb 28, 2011 9:31 PM CST reply actions
java, Brown. Or go up and down when Doge is in.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:31 PM CST reply actions
We’re playing a team with half of our talent that runs their stuff.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:32 PM CST reply actions
Point guard play is killing us again…..Dogus is too limited and JCB has decision making problems…Man, TT’s FT’s are brutal to watch…
by Patrick Bateman on Feb 28, 2011 9:34 PM CST reply actions
The playing time might help Brown’s other issues, but he did throw it away quite a bit last year. He has managed the ball better this year it seems.
by java on Feb 28, 2011 9:34 PM CST reply actions
Don’t know about that. They look pretty good to me. Our offense has just ground to a halt
by ransomstoddard on Feb 28, 2011 9:34 PM CST reply actions

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 28, 2011 9:34 PM CST reply actions
I keep thinking the same thing Nickel. I want an explosion after a three.
by jinx on Feb 28, 2011 9:35 PM CST reply actions
Passing it back and forth is not running an offense.
by nobis60 on Feb 28, 2011 9:36 PM CST reply actions
Knight said Hamilton needs to create his shots (earlier in broadcast).
by java on Feb 28, 2011 9:37 PM CST reply actions
Brutal game for Joseph. No confidence on the jumper and getting schooled by Pullen on the other end.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:37 PM CST reply actions
Does Hamilton go through double screens any more? Hes not open when he stands there
by Mysterious Package on Feb 28, 2011 9:38 PM CST reply actions
At this moment in time, we’re shooting 16-50.
I know the trend is to bitch about Rick Barnes, but shit. That’s just awful and some of it has to rest on the players’ shoulders.
As does KSU’s 21/39 shooting.
by CrazyJoeDavola on Feb 28, 2011 9:38 PM CST reply actions
Ironic that the only guy that came to play on senior night has been a freshman….
Okay, the gnome hit a three….
by Patrick Bateman on Feb 28, 2011 9:38 PM CST reply actions
Knights criticizing our spacing on offense. Add that to no movement without the ball and it’s no wonder we’re stagnant.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:38 PM CST reply actions
2nd bad game in a row for Joseph IMO
by Mysterious Package on Feb 28, 2011 9:39 PM CST reply actions
A gutless team and a clueless coach. Cannot fucking believe this is happening again.
by NVHorn on Feb 28, 2011 9:39 PM CST reply actions
I know nothing about basketball. But it sure doesn’t seem like this is the offense we were running to start the year. Trips, Bob am I wrong?

Who’s #21 for kstate who runs like he has 80 yr old knees..
nice drive there by Jham; look Barnes, take notes from freaking martin on when to call a timeout…
by ballrific on Feb 28, 2011 9:41 PM CST reply actions
Frank Martin during timeouts cracks my shut up.
+9.5 was a freaking joke in this game.
by dick on Feb 28, 2011 9:41 PM CST reply actions
Nice move Hamilton! Please put Brown in now out of timeout. We need shooters out there for spacing which is basketball 101
by Mysterious Package on Feb 28, 2011 9:42 PM CST reply actions
CJD, Rick’s been fine this game. He adjusted by making sure TT gets plenty of touches inside. The problem I have is why wasn’t TT getting 25 paint touches against a team that plays 4 guards? It cost us the ballgame at CU.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:42 PM CST reply actions
java, the kids are doing Mikan drills right now.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:43 PM CST reply actions
Maybe Tristan should try and bank them in. One problem with our defensive rebounding of late is our guards don’t seem to be helping as much….
by Patrick Bateman on Feb 28, 2011 9:45 PM CST reply actions
If Balbay stays in he must drive everytime
by Mysterious Package on Feb 28, 2011 9:45 PM CST reply actions
We box out and all the guys just stand there watching the k-state player scoop up the ball. We look frozen by the prospect of trying to come back after NU and CU.
by Grateful Horn on Feb 28, 2011 9:46 PM CST reply actions
Dangerous time for the Horns…..TT and JH are resting…..Barnes want to get them some rest at the dead ball and then after the 8 minute TV TO…..We need to get a stop…

That’s not a foul on Wangmene. Not in this game.
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:49 PM CST reply actions
We don’t suck. We’ve just been scouted to the point that, as flawed as this team is, our weaknesses are exposed. It’s 5-on-4 and pray for the right J’C to show up.
by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 9:52 PM CST reply actions
Bad defensive rebounding. Worse shot attempt by JCB
by Grateful Horn on Feb 28, 2011 9:53 PM CST reply actions

Cory can’t let Spradlin back cut him there. No excuse
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 9:55 PM CST reply actions
Trips- He just did, his patented knee-jerk pulling of a player (who happens to be our second best shooter) after one admittedly ill-advised shot attempt that led to 2 (made) FTs.

Martin’s “intense” act is weak. What a girl
by ransomstoddard on Feb 28, 2011 9:59 PM CST reply actions
Don’t want to be dramatic, but this feels like it could be some of the most important 4 minutes of hoops we’ve played all season. Down 4, at home, to a formidable team, reeling from 2 bad collapses – I want to see what this team is made of.
by Grateful Horn on Feb 28, 2011 10:00 PM CST reply actions
Barnes doesn’t seem to pull Balbay after bad shots like he does other guys.
by mashtun on Feb 28, 2011 10:00 PM CST reply actions

by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 10:02 PM CST reply actions

Its clear we are pretty dependent on Hamilton to be successful
by ransomstoddard on Feb 28, 2011 10:04 PM CST reply actions

by wisconsinhornybadger on Feb 28, 2011 10:06 PM CST reply actions
At this stage of the game, Barnes’s option is a pouting J’Covan, coming in cold off the bench, with the proverbial chip on his shoulder. Bad mojo.
by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 10:06 PM CST reply actions
Jordan’s going to really struggle in the league on defense…His lateral quickness is so lacking……

that’s game set match ladies…you’re welcome Kansas.
by ballrific on Feb 28, 2011 10:07 PM CST reply actions
The book on us: be physical with our guards. We have no ability to adjust and will then pout our way completely out of games
by ransomstoddard on Feb 28, 2011 10:07 PM CST reply actions
Frank Martin is owning Rick Barnes. They draw up a set to get their horse a layup, and we flounder at the other end when we have a clear advantage with Tristan Thompson. There are no words.

What is Brown playing? Just looks like Barnes has physically and mentally worn out this team again a month out from the tourney…

Really tired of losing watching UT lose to K St. in hoops and football over and over now. This looks just like last year.
by NickRivers on Feb 28, 2011 10:11 PM CST reply actions
I give Barnes a bunch of credit “reinventing” his offense this summer, but he obviously has serious flaws, not the least being in-game coaching and adjusting
by Grateful Horn on Feb 28, 2011 10:12 PM CST reply actions
seems we have offensive problems in our big 3 sports and have for a while now…inconsistent at best.

by ransomstoddard on Feb 28, 2011 10:13 PM CST reply actions

by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 10:13 PM CST reply actions
Put a fork in this team. What a HUGE disappointment. This is sort of like watching Texas football with Greg Davis running the offense. Call me when it’s over. Would someone please take the time to comprise a list of four or five replacements for Checkers.

Maybe we should foul the guy with the fucking broken hand Rick!
by Trips Right on Feb 28, 2011 10:16 PM CST reply actions
I really think that Barnes spends about 80 percent of practice working on defense and 20 percent on offense. What a poorly coached team this looks like.
Fuck!!!!!!
by jinx on Feb 28, 2011 10:16 PM CST reply actions
I’ll tell you why, because they shouldn’t have been taking jumpers at all. They should have just been pounding it inside and putting KState in deeper foul trouble.
by Saint on Feb 28, 2011 10:17 PM CST reply actions
Brown is showing us now why he should have been in earlier. Why?
Driving to the basket & drawing the foul. He should be doing that for most of the game.

This team still makes the same stupid mistakes that mess did last season. Bad shots and missed free throws.

At halftime Barnes said that the team just needed to “screen more and cut harder,” indicating that he thought everything was ok if the team just did what it was supposed to. At that point, I turned to my dog and said, “we’re done for.”

by Texoz on Feb 28, 2011 10:24 PM CST reply actions
It’s always been “Rick’s way or the highway.” It works when you’re winning; not so much when you’re scuffling. Barnes is simply unable to manage the game and the fragile players HE’s recruited, most recently J’C, over the course of an entire season.
Simply sickening.
by AKHorn on Feb 28, 2011 10:24 PM CST reply actions
Not sure why anyone would say this was an upset. Ksu is the better team. Period.

by NickRivers on Feb 28, 2011 10:26 PM CST reply actions
Congratulations to KSU. They’re the better team at this point in the season. They know who they are and what they need to do on both ends of the floor. On the other hand, the team in Orange needs a temperature check—staff and players.

It’s hard to say, but this is actually worse than last season.
Shooting around 30% on your home floor and giving up around 50% on your home floor are simply unacceptable. This team is done.
Second round exit, at best.

It’s so much fun being a Longhorn fan, these days. With the exception of Eddie Reese, it seems the underachieving entitlement syndrome has completely taken over the place.
by Blueshorn on Feb 28, 2011 10:44 PM CST reply actions
The reason that Jordan is getting his shot blocked and that he is getting the ball slapped away when he is dribbling is because he isn’t using his body to protect the ball. One time tonight he was driving for a layup on the left side and, rather than use his left hand (which would have put his body between the defender and his shooting hand), he completely spun around so he could shoot with his right hand. It turned an easy shot into an extremely difficult shot that he missed.
When Jordan is defended by a smaller, faster player (which is nearly always), he has to use his body to shield the defender from the ball. Jordan has to be able to both dribble and finish with either hand.

Some coaches wear on teams. With the seasons getting longer and more stressful, those sorts of personalities get rapidly diminishing returns as the calendar moves into the homestretch.
Put another way – you only get so many a**-hole moments as a coach during a season. Sort of like time-outs during a game. Barnes has no clue how to use both.
I think they’re tuning him out. Just like last year.

Are we prohibited from hiring a hitting coach? I never understood that.

Collectively, Gary, Cory, Jordan, and J’Covan were 11 of 48 from the field for under 23%.
KSU hit 50% of its shots. When the horns don’t defend well, everything else suffers (except for rebounding where they beat KSU on the boards 36 to 32 (even though KSU had way more defensive rebound opportunities)).
Three common factors in the last three losses are that the horns have not defended well, Jordan has not shot well, and the horns did worse in the second half than the first half in all 3 losses. The cure for better defense and better second half performance might be giving the horns more rest to freshen those tired legs. That might also help Jordan get out of his slump.

I’m afraid Barnes Burnout nailed it. Juxtapose this team with what Lavin’s doing in his first year with the Johnnies. Lavin’s the anti-Barnes.

Barnes and MB share a collective inability to take hold of the jugular when B12 championships are well within their sights… whereas Kansas and OU… never f***ing mind.
The K-State thing is getting beyond old. Is there any sense of urgency when it comes to this team?

It only took him 12 years to figure out his offense was a pile of shit. Maybe with another dozen the dumb motherfucker can discover how to not burn his team out.
The problem is we’re stuck with this prideful idiot for as long as he wants to be here. If he was fired/forced out before anything short of three consecutive losing seasons, the Texas job would be radioactive to anyone worth a damn.

Dick Barnes, he makes the basketball bad. I love how the morale of the team directly, and negatively correlates with time. Beginning of the season, everyone’s happy, end of the season, everyone hates each others’ guts.

Bingo. It’s not difficult to see or figure out either, unless you’re the head coach I guess. Stubborn bastard.

It isn’t clear to me that Barnes’ problem is that he has worn out his welcome with his kids. He has been much gentler this season than in previous seasons. The morale this season seems much better than last season. For example, Cory still listens to Barnes and has a good relationship with Barnes. At this point last season, Bradley was studiously ignoring Barnes’ criticism.
Jordan is much more receptive to Barnes this season than last season. Tristan, Gary, Hill, and Balbay are all fine with Barnes. The only player who is having problems with Barnes over and over is J’Covan and Barnes has bent over backwards to work with J’Covan.
The players’ problems have little or nothing to do with Barnes being a tyrant. To give credit where credit is due, Barnes has improved a bunch in his court side demeanor. There are mechanical explanations for the team’s problems. Cory might be hitting the freshman wall a bit. Jordan’s limitations (doesn’t go left well, doesn’t protect his dribble and shot with his body, is lacking confidence because he hasn’t been hitting his shot) are being exposed by coaches who have studied his video. Gary has trouble dealing with with big physical front lines. Balbay has zero jump shot. Tristan has been doing great and Brown has been mostly doing OK to good.
NU’s efficient double low post big man offense exposed the horns’ low post defense weakness. CU’s 4 guard offense plus altitude are a challenge for any team to defend when those guards are hitting outside. The problem had nothing to do with attitude (altitude might have had something to do with it though). If Barnes had attacked the defensive weaknesses of the 4 guard lineup, the horns might have been able to force CU to match up (but that did not happen).
It would not be surprising if a big part of the horns problem is that they are tired from playing a season of very intense defense by a team with a short bench. Getting some rest may do wonders for their game.
This season’s team is not last season’s team and there is still time for the horns to right the ship. If the horns go out of the Big 12 tournament early, it gives them a chance to rest their legs. While I don’t think the horns will go all the way in March Madness, they have the talent to go deep. They need to recommit themselves to defense and relax on offense (where they are pressing, trying too hard, caring too much).
