I am spiritually prepared for whatever may happen.

I fully expect the worst which has correspondingly prepared me for elation at victory over a marginal foe. Thanks Rick!
by Toadvine on Mar 18, 2011 8:17 AM CDT reply actions
I really hope Rick spreads the floor out to get doge to the basket for some easy layups. I’m looking for doge to have 12pts /5 boards /5 dimes, preferably by the half.
by scagnetti on Mar 18, 2011 8:20 AM CDT reply actions
No this is the game when Doge starts to shoot like Jesus Shuttlesworth (I didn’t want to use his real name, because, you know. Ah fuck it, Ray Allen). We’ve been hiding it for three years, waiting for the right time to break it out. Stragegery, imo.
by nordberg on Mar 18, 2011 8:27 AM CDT reply actions
I agree, nordberg. Doge is about to unleash the fury known as the mid-range jumper.
So it shall be written, so it shall be done.
Oh, and fuck Detroit, buy a Honda.

How is J’Covan’s ankle? I haven’t heard anything about it since the end of the Kansas game.

Headed over to Texadelphia for the action. If our shots don’t fall, at least I will have mustard blend to console me.

Balbay already with 4.

Quick whistles in this game…Calling it tight…

Benson is being afforded Michael Jordan levels of respect from the whistles.
Let’s see how old Matt Hill does.

Oakland has no will to defend beyond trying to block your shot.
When you’re the less talented team, you can’t win without getting stops.
Elevated pace, ball pressure, heavy bench minutes early – we’re in great shape.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 11:42 AM CDT reply actions
just tuned in cringing.
hope we can sustain this level of enthusiasm without a second half lapse!!
by goondog on Mar 18, 2011 11:43 AM CDT reply actions
We’re 3 missed bunnies from having this thing blown wide open. Got to start killing the easy ones or it’ll bite us.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2011 11:46 AM CDT reply actions
Looks like TT is overly susceptible to a big with the fluidity to throw a few fakes because he’s looking for that delayed block shot he loves. Throwing our other bigs to body and go hands up seemed like a good idea, but he’s getting the whistle love.
by Erik The Orange on Mar 18, 2011 11:47 AM CDT reply actions
Gary has picked it up this game. Great to see. How is that a foul on Tristan?
by Patrick Bateman on Mar 18, 2011 11:48 AM CDT reply actions
The whistles in this game are ridiculous…..we’re already in the bonus…
by Patrick Bateman on Mar 18, 2011 11:49 AM CDT reply actions
We get layuups when we want, stop settling for fucking jumpers!
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2011 11:51 AM CDT reply actions
Real bad stretch there. 2 quick, senseless jumpers, Gary getting lost on defense, giving up an offensive rebound and a TO…..
Let’s get the ship righted….
by Patrick Bateman on Mar 18, 2011 11:53 AM CDT reply actions
That little run was on our guys and their unwillingness to play the scouting report.
- Bader with an open 3 look
- Will Hudson on the offensive glass because no one put an ass on him
Play the scout and we win going away.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 11:54 AM CDT reply actions
Hamilton – please don’t give up any more offensive boards to Miguel Ferrer from Robocop.
by nobis60 on Mar 18, 2011 11:54 AM CDT reply actions
This was going much better when we were attacking the rim. Come on Horns!
by il Cattivo on Mar 18, 2011 11:55 AM CDT reply actions
They are giving Gary his shot. Instead of passing into 3 defenders, he needs to take a dribble or 2 to the bucket, get set, and shoot. And then box out on the other side.
by Monahorns on Mar 18, 2011 11:55 AM CDT reply actions
If we would just let them not guard us we’ll be okay.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2011 11:55 AM CDT reply actions
when UT was playing its best ball of the season, they were “on” about 80% to 90% of the time. recently it’s 60/40 or 50/50. Why is that? It’s like they play well, then totally forget what they’re supposed to do.
by Texoz on Mar 18, 2011 11:56 AM CDT reply actions
That comments wins the thread, Trips.
We’re taking shots that are available against the Lakers. We should take the shots that are available against Oakland.

if jordan or gary help on benson and only give him one way to go against tristan that’s the end of that guy.
how did this coach get benson and bader? they’re both real good.

Love JCB’s pace this last stretch of games. He’s not out of control, he letting the game come to him…

Their Hamilton trying to win it by himself, our Hamilton playing good team ball, I’ll take it.
by Erik The Orange on Mar 18, 2011 12:03 PM CDT reply actions
THe OU coach doesn’t realize he’s gotten a lot of calls. He’s wasting a lot of referee capital by berating them.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2011 12:04 PM CDT reply actions
Bad last possession….If their Hamilton doesn’t pull out two step back 3’s, we’d be even better shape. We’re good to go.
Sager’s jacket is outstanding….

Solid half of basketball from the good guys.
Oakland has some legit scorers, but they can’t win. You have to defend Texas.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 12:04 PM CDT reply actions
The Oakland coach reminds me of Tom Penders after a couple of whiskey sours.
by il Cattivo on Mar 18, 2011 12:05 PM CDT reply actions
I love when the opponent closes the half on 4/5 shooting.

how did this coach get benson and bader? they’re both real good.
They explained about Benson. 6-8, 180 as a HS senior, averaged four ppg.
Bader’s a good shooter. Can he keep up with Cory Joseph on defense?
by Bob in Houston on Mar 18, 2011 12:08 PM CDT reply actions
The scouting report was spot on. These guys just run and gun and hope that they can outscore you… because they sure aren’t going to stop you.
I’m especially encouraged by the quasi-snowbirding we keep doing. If OU isn’t going to hustle back, let’s try for cheap points.
by johnnymac on Mar 18, 2011 12:08 PM CDT reply actions
Much more good than bad for the half overall, but our lead should be well into the double digits. Still good to see TT and CJ playing well despite it being their first NCAA game.
I’d like to see more of Dogus on Hamilton in the 2nd half. We’re not going to have any trouble on offense, so I’d like to see Dogus make those 3’s just a little more contested.
by HoyaHorn on Mar 18, 2011 12:09 PM CDT reply actions
Scip, I agree. They’ve been waiting for good shots and making them. They built the lead and sustained it. Tristan has shown he can block Benson without fouling. That means a bunch more threes in the second half.
by Bob in Houston on Mar 18, 2011 12:10 PM CDT reply actions
srr50,
That’s a great point. Really has been nice and Rick hasn’t gone to Hill, Dogus, Alexei on the court without TT of JH. We hopefully can wear down these guys in the 2nd half and win going away….
by Patrick Bateman on Mar 18, 2011 12:10 PM CDT reply actions
We’re shooting 58%.
Tristan – 9 pts, 4 rebs, 3 blocks
Benson – 6 pts, 4 rebs, 2 blocks
Tristan only has 1 foul.
J’Covan and Hamilton each have 9.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 12:11 PM CDT reply actions
Good so far. I’m at work watching it on TV…not bad.
Just keep scoring and we’ll be fine.
by uthookem on Mar 18, 2011 12:13 PM CDT reply actions
J’Selfish cost us about 6 pts late in the half.
by Art Vandelay on Mar 18, 2011 12:14 PM CDT reply actions
Keys to second half:
Defense:
- Have to keep Hudson off of the offensive glass. All 9 of his points are on put backs. They’re the quiet points that are hurting us
- Cover white people when they’re standing on the 3 point line
Offense:
- Great shots are available on every possession. Take those instead of settling for the average shot.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 12:20 PM CDT reply actions
9 players saw action in the 1st half, and 7 of them scored. No one shot under 50%.
Benson, Hamilton and Bader are terrific offensive threats, but I have to believe that we will grind them down in the 2nd half.
by srr50 on Mar 18, 2011 12:22 PM CDT reply actions
Missed layups and settling jumpers are the only errors we’ve made so far. I love the shots we’re giving up on the defensive end especially the ones to Hamilton. Those are 25% type attempts or worse.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2011 12:23 PM CDT reply actions
when UT was playing its best ball of the season, they were "on" about 80% to 90% of the time. recently it’s 60/40 or 50/50. Why is that? It’s like they play well, then totally forget what they’re supposed to do.
Texas has not put together two halves of A game basketball this year.
by The General on Mar 18, 2011 12:23 PM CDT reply actions
Gonna try this again. Hard to believe the halftime squawk was that Texas took a lot of bad shots. I saw quite a bit of patience. Not perfect, but what can you do?
by Bob in Houston on Mar 18, 2011 12:24 PM CDT reply actions
Which means Hamilton is due to miss his next 7 step back threes.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2011 12:24 PM CDT reply actions
srr50 -
TV timeouts + the number of guys we played in the 1st half should mean long 2nd half of stretches of our best units.
If we start the half fucking around and allow Oakland to tie in the first 4 minutes, I will be irritated.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 12:24 PM CDT reply actions
Even if the TV guys are tolerable today, you should checkout Westwood One’s radio broadcast of this game featuring Brad Sham (former ‘Horn P-by-P man) – radio gold. (it’s on 1050AM here in Silicon Valley).

Our stupidity is worth 5 points to the other team
by ransomstoddard on Mar 18, 2011 1:26 PM CDT reply actions
Oakland was legitimately dangerous, but we did it to ourselves.
Gary Johnson needs to decide how he’d like to be remembered and Barnes needs to work on some end of game situations tomorrow.
We freaked out because Oakland cut it to 5 with a 1:30 left. You’d think we went down 2.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 1:28 PM CDT reply actions
“Our stupidity is worth 5 points to the other team”
At least. That was not very smart basketball down the stretch.
I heard a bunch during the regular season that we’d need J’Covan to be on in March. Yep. If he hadn’t been we’d be headed back to Austin right now.
by nordberg on Mar 18, 2011 1:28 PM CDT reply actions
The whole thing started because Texas started to try to milk the clock with almost 4 minutes left instead of attack.
That lethargy affected defensive intensity as well. I just don’t understand the lack of consistency. They have been bitten by it all year, but no real sustained improvement.

Wisconsin won handily yesterday over a really shitty Bellmont team. Kentucky beat Princeton(yeah, tht’s right, Princeton) by two on a last second shot and Louisville, one of the hottest eams in the tournament, lost to Morehead Fucking State. We won, or so it would seem.

Oakland tied UT on the boards with 34 and beat UT on offensive boards 14 to 12. The Oakland power forward Hudson has 11 rebounds (including 7 offensive rebounds) while Gary old had 2 rebounds total.

A wake up call is one thing – this may have been a license for Barnes to start Coaching Angry™. That always turns out well.

Frank is right.
I think we’ve all seen enough tournament basketball to know that survive and move on is the name of the game. Plenty of teams make deep tournament runs after eking out a first round victory against an inferior opponent.
Three awful minutes let Oakland cut it to 5 when the game still mattered. Thankfully, J’Covan took ownership while our seniors flailed.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 18, 2011 1:36 PM CDT reply actions
Gary has not been as productive in the last couple of months. We will not get to the FF if he doesn’t find that first half of the season Gary Johnson.
We need about 10 to 12 pts and 7 to 10 boards from him.
What we don’t need is him dribbling the ball up the court when the game is on the line. Holy Christ.
by Texoz on Mar 18, 2011 1:37 PM CDT reply actions
Texas hit about 81% of their free throws (21 of 26) in today’s 4 point victory. That was a critical difference. Who would have thought Texas would win the game from the line? J’Covan is a master at drawing the foul.

I hope Brown earned the right to have it in his hands at the end of the game after CJs stiffness and Brown’s FT, J’Automatic!
by Erik The Orange on Mar 18, 2011 1:38 PM CDT reply actions
And we don’t need him constantly throwing the ball in to double and triple teams. Good grief.
BTW, Thompson was horrible in this game. He’s slow, short and he looks funny. So, there is nothing here for you NBA scouts to see. Nothing at all. Just keep moving.

GJ spent a lot of his time prowling the area just inside the 3 point arc. I hope that wasn’t by design, but it almost had to be.
Very few rebounds. Not at all active on easy shots and was forced in to handling at the key or the elbow.
A really weird gameplan for the big men, but I guess Rick thought he could win a track meet.

“GJ spent a lot of his time prowling the area just inside the 3 point arc.”
I mentioned this earlier. WTF was that? We had both him and Balbay out there behind the line together a bunch, playing 3 on 5. I don’t remember seeing that this year, and I saw it a handful of times today. Very strange.
by nordberg on Mar 18, 2011 1:43 PM CDT reply actions
Thompson’s stats are deceiving. Six of his 7 blocks were clearly fouls, and most of his rebounds hit the ground first. Why is he even playing?

Agree, Ransom…TT was owned today by a first round pick…just imagine what would happen if TT was in the NBA…horrible.

Yeah, great game by Tristan. Basically battled Benson pretty evenly (Bensen had the edge on the boards, Tristan had the edge on scoring and shooting percentage) with virtually no defensive help. Really a risky strategy by Barnes not to give Tristan defensive help (if Tristan gets in foul trouble, the horns are sunk) but Tristan pulled it off.

It’s funny, so many were lamenting our draw of Oakland in the first round, as their interior size and rebounding suggested a match-up problem. The team goes out, plays pretty well for stretches, and wins the game. Yet, some want to crucify them for WINNING in a less than perfect way. Note, though, that the major contributors on this team have never experienced post-season success. A little pucker at the end of a close game when the other team appears to have the momentum is natural. (In fact, none of the contributors, save Gary and Lexi who both played nominal post-season minutes on the Elite 8 team in 2008 (Gary for injury reasons), have ever experienced anything in the NCAA tourney beyond the second round – Doge, Hill, Lexi were all injured in 2008 during the post-season run. ) Yes, they played tight down the stretch, and one should hope that Gary, after four years, has a bit higher hoops IQ. However, they got the win, which should only serve to boost the young gun’s confidence heading into the next round. And, they shot free throws lights out, which is a great sign. Take a deep breath, and enjoy the win, folks. If can’t do that, the we might need to schedule you an appointment to come see me.

Boy, that escalated quickly…..I mean that really got out of hand fast.
Thrilled to move on. Oakland was a very tough draw and dangerous team.
The almost meltdown in the last 5 minutes is disappointing but that’s the price you pay when you don’t have a strong PG. Myck can’t get here soon enough. Gary’s play has been disappointing, but wow Tristan. I hope Jordan can find the range from 3 pt here soon. JCB, gnome, and JH all played pretty well on the perimeter. CJ too except in the final 3 minutes. We struggled getting good looks down the stretch and probably need the ball in JH or JCB’s hands more.
Bring on the winner of AZ/Memphis….

OK, I don’t want to be responsible for Tristan going to the NBA but isn’t it amazing that Tristan can set a UT record for blocks in a March madness game defending a player of Bensen’s caliber?
by Kafka on Mar 18, 2011 2:09 PM CDT reply actions
UT guards need to realize there is a time and place for the crossover dribble. As the game winds down and you are protecting a lead, don’t do the crossover when your defender is within touching distance (I’m looking at you Cory). It is OK to protect the ball with your body by spinning.

Ugh. Play this way against AZ and I would give us 55/45 odds, against Duke I would expect a 10 point loss. Don’t think we are ever getting back to our Feb level f play.

How does a team that limped into the tournament with four losses in its last eight games, including two losses to non-tourney teams, still need a “wake-up call”?
This team is either a very, very heavy sleeper, or its vital signs have long since disappeared.
by gazmorida on Mar 18, 2011 2:14 PM CDT reply actions
Yea, Rick may want to talk about JCB about that. He should probably find a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for awhile.
BTW, I didn’t enjoy CBS inferring that Oakland’s struggles at 3 were a product of them just being cold. I thought we defended the heck out of the 3 point line. Almost all of their 3’s were contested and they hit some tough ones. We weren’t perfect, but happy with that portion of the defense. Defensive rebounding and hustle points, not so much. But that’s a function of having guys overplaying on the 3pt line. Gary got worked.

This is such a great point. Killer crossovers are for penetrating to the rack, not protecting leads. Ball-you-man on offense needs to be revisited in the last few minutes….
