Steele – So reliable, he’s got a dead guy making 3rd team on defense.

I’m shocked that Case McCoy isn’t 4th team based on his spring game performance…

Guess Steele didn’t get the memo on Austin Box
by pantsparty on May 27, 2011 4:10 PM CDT reply actions
Why is Jackson Jeffcoat 4th team and Blake 1st team? I think Tannehill is better than 4th team.
by KilgoreTrout on May 27, 2011 4:23 PM CDT reply actions
I think Tannehill’s better than fourth, but I’m not sure he’s better than the three guys in front of him. That’s unpossible.
I believe Steele sent out an addendum concerning Box – not sure that excuses him.

Would even the most blind Texas homer alive put Blake Gideon first team All-Big 12?
by nordberg on May 27, 2011 4:37 PM CDT reply actions
You sure you don’t want to talk about statistics on this thread?
Half of OB’s has him in the Heisman race, what the hell are you talking about?

Steele is held prisoner by the publisher — and they all come out a helluva lot earlier than in the past. It’s like anything else in the media, the rush to be first became more important than the desire to be thorough

Apparently, Mack would.

You forgot K. Randall on the first team.
However, how pathetic is it that we our QB isn’t in the top 40% of Big XII QBs. Weak.
by SDHornEsq on May 27, 2011 6:24 PM CDT reply actions
Yes, Nordberg, they would. Apparently you do not subscribe to WWW.ORANGEBLOODS.COM, the center of the longhorn universe (no one can escape its gravitational pull).
by Mad Clapper on May 27, 2011 6:52 PM CDT reply actions
So, we have only one player on offense that can crack the top 3 teams and its a frosh rb who has never played a down of college football. What are we, Texas or Austin Peay? Pathetic
by ransomstoddard on May 27, 2011 7:57 PM CDT reply actions
When you look at our offense, it is Mike Davis, DJ Monroe, Fozzy’s chrystal skeleton, and a bunch of dude that would have trouble starting at ULaLa. There is not a single dude that I am mad about their exclusion.
Gideon’s inclusion, of course, is embarrassing.

Gideon … is he even the best safety on the team? Could he even carry Vaccaro’s jock? Somebody served Steele orange kool-aid … shame on you Mack.
by VirginiaLonghorn on May 28, 2011 9:46 AM CDT reply actions
In addition to Gideon’s inclusion I notice that Tony Jefferson of Oklahoma appears no where on the 4-deep. I guess SS/LB is too confusing and modern for Phil Steele to manage into his consideration for best defensive players, after all teams have been using them for only a few decades.
Obviously he should replace Gideon on the 1st team, possibly with Blake excluded from the list or probably just bumped to 3rd or 4rth team. Vaccaro should be ahead of him as well, it should be abundantly clear if you watched any Texas last year that Vaccaro will be a better safety this year than Gideon.
Our DL and LBs are well represented at least, I think there’s every reason to believe there is enough talent on hand to win 8 games or more.

Every football thread seems to be a Gideon sucks thread. COACHES All Big 12 honorable mention, Muschamps guy while he was here, Akina and Brown’s guy. After 3 years it does get a little old.
But I guess the armchairs know best.

It may be piling on. But at the end of the day. He is still one of the worst safeties to ever start for UT.

So sad that our OL depth quality is so lacking that not a single one can crack the top 3 teams (FIFTEEN slots)! Nice job Mack and MacWhorter.
All I can say about Malcom Brown on the 1st team is WOW! That is bold…but awesome.
And you can’t tell me Jeffcoat isn’t better than 4th team. Total BS.
And Vacarro should be somewhere on there.
This should fuel some fire under our guys, no doubt.

My favorite Gideon highlight.

Needless to say, that’s the only Texas – KU highlight I care to watch.

@Triston27
It’s one thing to be critical of a player’s performance but to enjoy watching him get clocked is simply pathetic… ESPECIALLY when he’s on the team you claim to be a fan of !
by Orange90 on May 28, 2011 9:57 PM CDT reply actions
Beyond the pale to say your favorite clip is watching the guy get knocked out. For better or worse he’s a multi year starter for your team. Should he be 1st team? No. Did he have anything to do with that ranking? No. Has MB1 earned the right to be named 1st team Rb? No. Will he by the end of the season? Probably depends more on your OL than him at this point.

“I think Tannehill’s better than fourth, but I’m not sure he’s better than the three guys in front of him. That’s unpossible. "
That’s actually a really good way of putting it, I’d tend to agree with you. It’s also tough to judge as all these QBs are such products of their offensive systems.
“All I can say about Malcom Brown on the 1st team is WOW! That is bold…but awesome.”
I’d lean towards more just silly. He may very well be a good RB, but to put him ahead of several good backs who have already proven themselves before he’s taken a snap is just nonsensical.

So Malcom Brown is a pre-season 1st teamer despite having no one worth mentioning blocking for him.
Must be the reincarnation of Tony Dorsett.

I was assuming that since Steele had Oklahoma State 19th in his daily release that Texas would not make the preseason top 30… but no.
Steele ranks Texas 18th.

I was wondering the same thing…how does Steele expect Malcom Brown to end up a FIRST team RB with not a single member of his OL on the first 3 teams? Never mind the fact that Brown hasn’t even played a down of college ball!
by Orange90 on May 29, 2011 2:39 PM CDT reply actions
Perhaps Steele based this upon Gideon’s unmatched ability to knock his own players out of games.
by tdwalsh on May 29, 2011 11:22 PM CDT reply actions
May be hard for Cyrus Gray to make first team all Big 12 if he can’t make first team Texas A&M.

Gideon!?!?! That is hilarious. Did Steele not watch the BU vs ut(california) game!?!?! Gideon sucks so bad that I think the BU plan was just to throw to whoever Gideon was supposed to cover.
M Brown on 1st team running back!?!?!?!? What a joke! Is he a one man offense? An Oline that couldn’t fight it’s way out of a wet paper sack,..only M. Davis on the outside that could scare anyone and blahhhhh at QB. No way M Brown can cure all of the major problems on offense.
