Texas vs. Arizona State Open Thread
If we can procure a tribe of pygmies to shrink Barry Bonds' head to normal size, we have a chance.
Plus, a little something to whet your Omaha appetite with an hour to go to first pitch.

Odibe young again McDowell.
Jungmann has his good stuff today. Early to mid-90’s on the gun when he didn’t touch 90 in his last outing.

Sun to shadow pitching in the early going should make this tough on hitters early on.

Four wet newspaper contacts and ASU goes down quietly in the first.

T26 is pitching to contact which is great news for his pitch count. Going to the bottom half of the second, still no score.

That ASU shortstop Marrero just made a sweet play.

Etier’s at bat was bad. Jeez, give yourself a chance, dude.

Nomar with the running rock from the booth. Calling for the double play with two out in the inning. Solid. Does ESPN have a Kangaroo Court?
Going to the third, still no score.

Brutal miscue leads to a run when it should have been an inning ending double play.

Cheap ass run on Etier error. 1-0, ASU.
Etier would like to redo that last 15 minutes.

Bloop double makes it 2 – zip ASU. Just a gift inning by the Horns. Jeebus.

The Horns answer after a gift call by the Umpire and a single by Brandon Loy to drive in Tant. Kevin Lusson looms large.

Weis with a knock and Loy goes first to the third. Runners on the corners, one out, and Ricardo Montahlban coming to the plate.

Brain dead to send the runner on that ball. Huge mistake

Saw Oddibe “In the Bigs” McDowell when he played the 1983 summer in the Alaska Baseball League for the Fairbanks Goldpanners. Played centerfield — with Shane Mack (UCLA) and Mark Davis (Stanford). They called it the “Million Dollar Outfield” as the MLB draft approached.
Oddibe could flat out run the ball down but I wondered how well he’d hit at the MLB level. As it turned out . . . not too well.
Oh yeah. A guy by the name of Barry Bonds joined the Goldpanners late that year and played with the team in the NBC Tournament in Wichita, Kan.

Why am I forced to watch every Longhorn team field an offense that would embarass peewee coaches.

When Oddibe was a rookie with the Rangers he hit a lot of home runs. After that season I think everyone figured out not to throw him any fastball’s and that ended his home run days.

I am not a huge expert on baseball, but I have friends with sons who play in the Houston area and they assure me that there are actually players in Harris and Montgomery County that can catch a baseball, throw a baseball, and hit a baseball.
In fact, i have been told that three players from the Houston area might have been interested in attending UT if on a regular basis the head coach “would not take the bat out of their hands”. Damn fools, I pointed out how sacrifice bunting on a regular basis has helped advance the MLB careers of Danks, Russell, and Stubbs versus working with them to hit a breaking ball.
Again, I am not very astute in baseball strategy so could someone clarify for me the thought process behind batters with low batting and OBP taking 2 strikes before swinging late in the game when the ASU pitcher seems to be grooving the first pitch strike to get ahead of the count? I am sure there is some Bill James or sabermetrics explanation for a bad offensive team taking very hittable pitches again and again and again when they are down late in games.

Yep, a friend sent me a note that we lost the first game of the supers in 2002 and 2005 and then came back to win it all…however, we didn’t bat 0.097 those seasons either.
Too much dead wood throughout the lineup, and no hitter that strikes a little fear into the opposing pitcher.
Oh well, at least next season we’ll get to see more bunting than at a Fourth of July parade on the Longhorn Network!

Etier had an awful game — can’t come up with the weak grounder to start; makes a terrible throw on the tail-end of a double play just after that; struck out horrifically the first time we threatened; struck out badly the next time up (can’t recall if there were runners on)… The best decision of the game was to bench him.
The highlight of the game was Loy’s failure to cover 2nd base on the should-be 1-6-3. Our defensive play was just sloppy and embarrassing.
Our team is so good at bunting — why don’t we ever bunt with runners on 3rd?

HenryJames is Etier’s private batting coach.

That’s what I thought was going to happen when they had the tying run at third with one out in the third inning.
Look, the season was summed up for me last weekend, against Texas State, when, with Texas down a run and having gotten a man to third, Bill Little started talking about the chances of a the pitcher throwing a wild one.

Are any of you surpised by this team? Not to go ransom, but you guys should be as used to this as a Barnes team melting down.
But magnus, didn’t you see the video when he got really really mad? Who gives a shit. It’s like football, you can’t expect to win games when you’ve already lost 1/3 of the battle before leaving the lockerroom.
There’s a reason few practice “Whiteyball” anymore.

This team responded with their backs against the wall in the regional. Not something you want to see turn into a habit, sure. But it’s far from over.

If Cole can shut them out tonight, or maybe hold them to one run, earned or otherwise, we have a damned good chance to stomp some ass 2-1 or something.
Seriously, win tomorrow and we should win on Sunday with four runs on two hits, five consecutive BB’s and a few HBP’s and errors by ASU.
This team isn’t anywhere near done torturing us, IMO.

Yeah, but he does it because most of the time, college teams aren’t good enough to make the plays that beat it. Gus did it the same way. You’re talking about two of the winningest coaches of all time at the college level.
Do they win because of it or in spite of it? The way I’ve seen them play lately, I think it’s in spite of it.
