Sam Acho: Big 12 Sportsman of the Year
Scan the headlines of this college offseason and then admire the cut of Mr Acho's jib. Acho Ocho Uno es Numero Uno. A great athlete, a great student, a great Longhorn, and the guy you want your daughter to marry. I'm so sorry we didn't deliver him the senior season he deserved.
Soak in this paragraph from Texassports:
In 2010-11, Acho has been named the winner of the Campbell Trophy as college football's top student-athlete, the Wuerffel Award winner as an all-around student-athlete, the ARA Sportsmanship Award recipient, winner of the College Football Performance Awards Defensive Lineman Trophy, an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team member, an ESPN Academic All-America First Team member, and a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy and Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. An All-Big 12 First-Team selection, he was also a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award and Lombardi Award.
Sam also graduated from the honors business curriculum at the McCombs School of Business with a 3.55 GPA.
By contrast, I once made a water balloon cannon to fire at the Zeta house. Who has the more distinguished resume? Hard to judge.
I wish Sam the best in his professional career for the Cardinals, but I expect big things from him that have nothing to do with sports.
Reach out to TheSamAcho on Twitter and let him know what he means to us.

That’s a lot of hardware. Most prolific student athlete in the history of Texas sports? I can’t think of another player in the last few decades that had as big of an impact in both categories.
And if somebody says Chris Hall, they’re IP banned for a year.

Our man Ahmard Hall also won the award, but he wasn’t quite the impact athlete or student Acho was. Still in the league though, which is incredible.
DJ Augustin would be a pretty good comp. He won the Cousy Award and was rocking a 4.0 GPA while he was a 1st team All-American. That happens in college basketball approximately never.

Well, my daughter is two, so stay the hell away Acho.
But seriously, while Auburn and Oregon are busy trying to win another mythical national title—The Fulmer Cup—its good to see Mr. Acho and the football program getting some much needed good publicity.
Congratulations, and good work!
Are there any more of those Acho’s in the pipeline?

I was really hoping that was him but it’s who I expected.
nordberg.
Maybe he deserves a week long ban just to ensure he spends quality time with his daughter on their vacation this weekend.

I fired water balloons at the Zeta house too. I’m pretty sure it counted toward my physics and psychology credits, that is if I had taken those classes. I have a feeling I know where fired them from but I’ll never tell.

Bill Campbell (who the Campbell award was named and was personally involved with the selection of Sam) speaks openly that he has never met a more impressive student-athlete. Bill played football at Columbia and now is closely aligned with the Stanford program.
Meeting Bill for the first time (a legend in Silicon Valley), and learning that I was also a Longhorn, he was immediately very complimentary of Sam, Coach Brown, and the entire University.
Sam Acho is helping to keep it real for all of us. Hook’em.

I’ve done more than most to piss off Zetas and, yet, one of them will be permashacking with me this year (ok, so she’ll pay rent too, but I like to imagine that she’ll be leaving every morning in one of my t-shirts with heels in hand).

We fired retried beans, water balloons, and a squirrel carcass at the Kappa Sig house.
I, too, deeply regret Acho’s senior season. It pained me every time I saw him make a play that he was stuck in that shitshow.

Any St. Mark’s Lion that plays D1 ball deserves an award for that alone. I think if I had lined up against Sam in high school I would have quivered like the dude lined up against Jefferson in Fast Times. In all earnestness, congratulations Sam on a well deserved award. A credit to both of my alma maters.

No Kidding. Acho went to St Mark’s in Dallas? Big step up in competition from HS to college. Even moreimpressive.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. Sam might only be 21 (22?) but he is what every man should aspire to be, and I don’t mean a gifted athlete about to get paid big-time in the league.

He always downplays his greatness. Shows human-like characteristics, but we all know better. He is incredible.
