Per ESPN, Jordan Hamilton will be traded to Portland for Rudy Fernandez and then dealt to Denver as part of the Miller/Felton trade.

Three Longhorns in the first round. Jay Bilas doesn't like the Joseph pick.

In other news, Ron Artest filed to change his name to Metta World Peace. What a fucking idiot.

J Hamilton to Mavs! Didn’t think he would fall that far.

Keep reading. He got dealt to Denver via Portland in a double trade.

Cory Joseph to San Antonio. Good fit. I didn’t think he’d get drafted.

Cory Joseph to the Spurs! Interesting pick? Best of luck to all three guys drafted in the 1st round.

CoJo to the Spurs. Thats 3 first rounders that Barnes recruited in the past 2 years. I’ll take it.

by Kasey on Jun 23, 2011 9:22 PM CDT reply actions

Clearly he’s got a good management team. Got him that guaranteed contract by sneaking him into the end of the first-round in a weak draft with a promise from a team who develops young talent well. Good look for the program cranking out first-rounders.

Okay just caught that, thanks for update. Mavs end up with Rudy Fernandez from Portland.

Jordan joining LaMarcus in Portland, hm? Might have to catch one of their games with OKC. Sounds like a worthy road trip.

Three Longhorns drafted in the first round. A National Championship for Coach Barnes.

by Varsity on Jun 23, 2011 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

three first round draft picks in one season and we end like we did… sigh.

by zizzy on Jun 23, 2011 10:22 PM CDT reply actions

The only other schools with more than 1 first round pick were Kansas and Duke with 2, while we had 3 in the first round. The difference between us and those 2 programs last year is that they got to the sweet 16…

And Duke lost to the same team Texas did — got flattened, actually — while KU lost to VCU.

I thought CJ was crazy for leaving early, and I wasn’t sure TT made the best decision because I thought he’d more likely end up in the middle of the draft with potential to drop in to the 20s if some thing odd happened. Guess their advisors know more than me.

ok here is an argument for corey joseph being just as important to a team as steve nash:

joseph reminds me of jason kidd. Not the young playmaking jason kidd, but the current game managing multiple-position-defensive-standout jason kidd. The one who is a key part of a national championship team. If steve nash can manage a game and play offense but not defense, couldn’t you argue that a guy that can manage a game and play defense is just as important to winning?

by wisconsinhornybadger on Jun 24, 2011 8:51 AM CDT reply actions

CoJo’s ceiling is probably less than that of 38 year old Jason Kidd.

by dick on Jun 24, 2011 9:32 AM CDT reply actions

not sure where the idea that cory joseph is some wizard game manager is coming from… for long stretches of the season i thought he looked lost and fatigued. better hope the spurs are willing to invest an awful lot of time in developing him.

comparing him to a 38 year old jason kidd would be an insult to jason kidd. and saying he is as important to a team as steve nash (2 time MVP)… please, are you for serious?

If it takes 3 first rounders to get us to the round of 32, how many first rounders do we need to win it all?

by ropeburn on Jun 24, 2011 9:42 AM CDT reply actions

There appears to be an inverse relationship between the amount of NBA talent on our team and our success. I’m kind of at a loss, because you certainly want guys like Joseph, Bradley, Thompson, etc. on your team, as opposed to, well, some of the players we’ve had in the past that played big roles on “better” teams.

by nordberg on Jun 24, 2011 9:54 AM CDT reply actions

Wasn’t there a guy in Austin who ran for mayor with the name John World Peace?

by Texas Wahoo on Jun 24, 2011 9:54 AM CDT reply actions

“If it takes 3 first rounders to get us to the round of 32, how many first rounders do we need to win it all?”

Probably fewer. The problem with one and dones is that it is hard to mold them into a cohesive team before they split for the NBA. It can be done but Barnes is not probably not the guy to do it.

This one and done thing is a sneaky plot by the NBA to undermine NCAA basketball. It is frustrating as hell to see our best players come and go so rapidly. We can takes some solace that UT players are getting drafted in the first round but really, who cares if UT is able to get two Canadians and a Californian drafted in the first round? If the UT basketball program is going to focus on getting players drafted by the NBA rather than winning championships (which I don’t get, whatever happened to there is no I in team?), can’t this Texas state school at least develop Texans for the NBA?

Bob: thanks for reminding us of our cluster fuck loss to Arizona. Say what you will about KU and Duke, but Bill Self and Coach K are far superior coaches to Barnes and it is a pleasure (normally) to watch Duke and KU play the game (compared to the root canal of watching a Barnes offense).

According to Hamilton, his own head coach, Rick Barnes, may have played a role. After the draft ended, Hamilton cleared the air, and told reporters he had reason to believe Barnes was telling NBA teams he was “uncoachable.” (via Chris Tomasson)

Just talked to Jordan Hamilton. He said believes reason he slipped in draft was because coach Rick Barnes told teams he wasn’t ‘coachable’
J. Hamilton: "(Barnes) called some teams and said that I probably wasn’t coachable and things like that. But I feel like I can be coachable’
Asked Jordan Hamilton how knows Rick Barnes allegedly called teams and said not coachable. Wouldn’t give names, said "got some feedback.‘’
More Hamilton on Barnes: "I love Texas and everybody is entitled to their opinion.’’ But Hamilton still later called Barnes "great coach’

wow.

by mattdubya on Jun 24, 2011 11:33 AM CDT reply actions

I think “coachable” to Rick Barnes means that he can mold you into a guy that can play defense at 110% for at least 60% of the season (before the collapse). In order to do this, you must sacrifice any and all ability to actually play offense.

Based on that definition, Hamilton is definitely uncoachable.

by jinx on Jun 24, 2011 1:28 PM CDT reply actions

I could give a fuck less how many first-rounders our basketball team produces. I want to see Texas cutting down the nets at the Final 4. If that can be accomplished with a bunch of above-average role players, none of whom goes on to play a single day in the NBA, I’m more than fine with it.

Agreed, this one-and-done bullshit is terrible for college basketball. Either make them stay a minimum of 2 years or don’t make them go at all.

by burnt orange outrage on Jun 24, 2011 1:45 PM CDT reply actions

Did Denver end up with Hamilton and Faried? Holy Crap.

by Nickel Rover on Jun 24, 2011 2:12 PM CDT reply actions

It’s not JUST that we had three 1st rounders, we also had three solid seniors on this team, one of them a stellar defender (Balbay), one a Mr. Hustle (Johnson) and the other gave some solid minutes in the paint (Hill).

You would think with those 6 players, plus a rising star in J’Covan, would give you better results in the tournament. The trendline for UT basketball in the tournament is downward. If Myck only stays one year, I don’t see things changing, and I see bad things in the future. Love Barnes, but he needs to find a way to put players in the NBA, and win COLLEGE titles.
