SB Nation Conference Re-draft: 7th round just went down

The 7th round is a wrap and while our stranglehold on this venture has loosened its grip slightly, we expect other teams to start tapping out by selecting the best Mormon school available, relying on a higher power to deliver the final vote on their conference might.

Star-divide

The 12 Pack continues to cling to its virtues: TVs, Cash, Books, and Bitches.

Round 7

-- The 12 Pack: CLEMSON
-- Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: ILLINOIS
-- Team Speed Kills: UCONN
-- Conference TMZ: MIZZOU
-- The House of a Thousand Sanctions: PITT
-- The Cult Of Les Miles: OKLAHOMA STATE

USA TODAY rendering of the 12 Pack's geographic dominance:

Manifest Destiny

Here's the updated Big Board:

12 Pack SOTP TSK TMZ HOTS COLM
1 1. Texas 2. Florida 3. Bama 4. TOSU 5. USC 6. LSU
2 12. UGA 11. PSU 10. OU 9. FSU 8. ND 7. Mich
3 13. U.C.L.A. 14. VT 15. Huskers 16. Cards 17. Ducks 18. UNC
4 24. Wiscy 23. Miami 22. A&M 21. Sparty 20. Vols 19. Stanford
5 25. U Dub 26. Auburn 27. Zona 28. WVU 29. Cuse 30. Arky
6 36. Duke 35. Kansas 34. Cal 33. Terps 32. UK 31. Iowa
7 37. Clemson 38. Illini 39. UConn 40. Mizzou 41. Pitt 42. Okie St

The 12 Pack picks up another big stadium in a power conference featuring the only coach in any sport named Dabo. The primary consideration for picking Clemson was the border rivalry with Georgia that Tony Barnhart has deemed "more intense than war". Mr. College Football isn't one for hyperbole. The Tigers also have a nice long distance relationship with Boston College via skype with guaranteed 4th quarter drama whenever they meet in person.

Looking at other schools picked in this round, the only one under any serious consideration was Mizzou, which didn't offer a viable rivalry with fellow 12 Pack schools and lacked sex appeal to those that dwell outside the Big 12. Or Columbia. This is where each pick will start to underwhelm so be sure to take the conference as a whole when assessing future selections.

At least Clemson satisfies the hot tang quotient. When other criteria fall short, appeal to the senses.

Oh how I long for the strong, secure arms of the 12 Pack...

Round 8 is underway. Who you got?

I’m shocked Arizona State is still available.

Utah or maybe Virginia

Motion to rename conference from “The Twelve Pack” to “Hot Tang Time Machine” …

by Brian @ BCI on Jul 11, 2011 3:16 PM CDT reply actions

Colorado’s still out there too. Ski bunnies ftw.

by Dagga Roosta on Jul 11, 2011 3:17 PM CDT reply actions

Round 8 has gone South Carolina, BYU and Utah so far …

by Brian @ BCI on Jul 11, 2011 3:17 PM CDT reply actions

FYI, round 7 should have begun with pick #37.

by texasengr on Jul 11, 2011 3:28 PM CDT reply actions

And we get the last pick in the draft, right? So we eventually get to choose “Team Irrelevant”.

On that, my vote is Harvard.

by Dagga Roosta on Jul 11, 2011 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Damn, Utah, South Carolina and BYU before Colorado? Half a national championship 20 years ago doesn’t mean as much as it used to.

by roach on Jul 11, 2011 3:36 PM CDT reply actions

At what point does Texas Tech enter the discussion?

by nordberg on Jul 11, 2011 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

When we begin to discuss hot girls living in a bleak wasteland.

by Scipio Tex on Jul 11, 2011 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

without alcohol.

by roach on Jul 11, 2011 4:24 PM CDT reply actions

Dude, Lubbock isn’t dry any more. So it’s got that going for it…and hot girls. That’s all I’ve got.

by MidTexHorn on Jul 11, 2011 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

At what point does Texas Tech enter the discussion?

When we begin to discuss hot girls whose fathers meet dates at the door with a 12 guage and won’t let their daughters move to Austin.

by srr50 on Jul 11, 2011 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

If Arizona State is still on the board, you have to take them. Best Tang west of Texas, imo.

by Kasey on Jul 11, 2011 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, unfortunately Dennis Erickson comes along with them. And an NCAA investigation into it’s baseball team. And shitty academics.

But they’re in the mix. Such is the power of Hot Tang.

“lubbock isn’t dry anymore”

that reminds me of many years ago when austin had a drinking curfew at midnight. many chafed at that, especially bar owners, and the city looked into the possibility of changing to a 2am curfew.

evening news one night, a tv brainiac interviewed a bar owner and asked him why he thought it was in the interest of the city of austin to make that change.

the guy said, ‘i don’t know whether you’ve noticed it, but at midnight there are still a lot of people out drinking, and a midnight curfew puts an awful lot of people who have been drinking on the street at the same time. what we bar owners want is another two hours to stagger them out.’

i think i was helpless on the floor before i could quit laughing.

by hah on Jul 11, 2011 5:39 PM CDT reply actions

we’re not going to like these numbers.

conf pts std dev % behind
SEC 677 12.2
Big Ten 657 11.8 3%
PAC-12 567 9.6 16%
ACC 537 11.2 6%
Big 12 456 16.9 18%
Big East 352 10.0 30%

hope this table is readable. i’ve never done this before.

  • gave a score of 100 to 1st team chosen, 99 to 2nd, etc.
  • summed the scores for the conferences to this point.
  • std dev gives some measure of how cohesive the conferences are regarding attractiveness of members.
  • the third number is % behind to show how far each conference is behind the next higher conference right now. eg, the big ten would only need to raise its score by 3% to equal the sec. we would have to raise our score a whopping 18% just to match the acc.

wow.

by not good numbers, big 12ers on Jul 11, 2011 7:11 PM CDT reply actions

No wow from me. We were pointing out that the Big 12 is utter dogshit when we chickened out on making the move West.

by Scipio Tex on Jul 11, 2011 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

Both Mizzou and Kansas are in the top half of the Big 12-2, in terms of overall appeal. ’Nuff said.

Also: conference name change, already? Several months have passed, Colorado and Nebraska are officially out the door, and it’s still the Big 12 somehow. That’s retarded.

I say we call it the “Big Deal”, to be spoken in a derisive nasal tone a la the fat kid from The Goonies.

by Dagga Roosta on Jul 11, 2011 8:33 PM CDT reply actions

Scip, I don’t think they chickened out. I think both they and A&M were told to work out the B12.

But B12 football is what it is.

by Bob in Houston on Jul 11, 2011 8:56 PM CDT reply actions

Anyone who doesn’t do exactly what I want must be disparaged in some fashion.

by Scipio Tex on Jul 11, 2011 9:35 PM CDT reply actions

scip, you probably know i was opposed to the move west. i was very hopeful that we could work something out with the big ten. i wanted whatever academic benefit we might get from associating with them through that cic arrangement. and i couldn’t get past the impression that the pac boys want us for our tv value but want to quarantine us in a low-rent district across the tracks from the real pac-8 with their castoffs.

that said, with what the known universe is learning about ohio state and other ignominies i can’t help feeling like we dodged a bullet by not heading north. i wonder if our clever leaders realized that all along. i suppose it is possible that they know even more than i do.

anyway, i don’t know what to hope for now. with baylor’s lips bonded to our sphincters, i don’t know that we can go anywhere. yeesh.

by duh on Jul 11, 2011 10:11 PM CDT reply actions

I’m rating the best available (after 3 picks of the eighth round):

Big 12 — Tech
Big Ten — Nobody thrills me; Purdue or Northwestern, I guess
SEC — Mississippi
ACC — Boston College, Virginia, Georgia Tech. Good TV market in N. England
Pac-10 — Arizona State or Colorado
Big East — Rutgers
Others — TCU, Memphis, San Diego State (sleeping giant potential)

by edsp on Jul 11, 2011 10:22 PM CDT reply actions

ed, i’d figure those noisy boise boys would show up some time or other.

by uh on Jul 11, 2011 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

ASU? Pretty sure letting community colleges in is against the rules.

by Will on Jul 12, 2011 1:21 AM CDT reply actions

Not Northwestern. It’s like taking Rice.

This is a state-school, big-football-attendance, TV-watchers party.

uh: Boise is strictly a mop-up choice IMO. Would you have taken them five years ago? Will you care about them in five more? More people live in Bexar County than in all of Idaho. Comparable metropolitan areas are Toledo and Wichita (slightly larger).

by Bob in Houston on Jul 12, 2011 10:09 AM CDT reply actions

Put USF in your pocket as a sleeper. 35k students, South florida recruiting. State that will have some growth.

by ged3 on Jul 12, 2011 10:18 AM CDT reply actions

I would look at BC and CU closely, but probably take UVA. Of course, I would have taken South Cackalacky before Clemson, so what the hell do I know? Not much.

by Matt Cotcher on Jul 12, 2011 10:35 AM CDT reply actions

ged: Only problem is that USF remains largely commuter. They’re dwarfed in a big city area by UF and FSU fans, much like UH is in Houston with Texas and A&M.

But in my mind, they’re quite comparable to Miami, and Miami is long gone.

by Bob in Houston on Jul 12, 2011 10:39 AM CDT reply actions

Matt, I’m with you on SC-East before Clemson, but they didn’t ask me either.

by Bob in Houston on Jul 12, 2011 10:40 AM CDT reply actions

Such is the power of Hot Tang.

I thought that was something the astronauts took into space.

by Bob in Houston on Jul 12, 2011 10:44 AM CDT reply actions

Oh we asked you. You guys wanted Mississippi State or something.

by Vasherized on Jul 12, 2011 11:10 AM CDT reply actions

Vash, there’s a typo up top there. Baylor is not listed and yet you didn’t select them in the 7th round. Can you fix that plz? ok thx.

by nordberg on Jul 12, 2011 11:15 AM CDT reply actions

BiH –
Good point. I was more thinking of them as a late round pick that could act as a staging area for our other heavy hitters to pull in a local game for some of the recruits. Too early here.

by ged3 on Jul 12, 2011 12:49 PM CDT reply actions

I know they’re our ugly stepsister and all, but I hope you all realize that TCU ranked in the top 10 in the nation last year in football budget. (Yes, it turns out the “Cinderella” is driving a Ferrari.) Just because they have a ridiculous mascot and hideous team colors doesn’t mean they don’t pull in real NFL-caliber talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

They spent $20.61M in 2009. That’s twice as much as Utah, about the same as USC, and only 20% than the BurntOrangiverse. Not exactly your ‘cute, little non-AQ team’ budget is it?

Whether you like the University or not. A Top 10 budget deserves a Top 40 pick.

by Rocky Mountain Hook 'Em on Jul 12, 2011 12:51 PM CDT reply actions

As soon as Patterson leaves, TCU will regress to the mean.

I don’t think the meet any of the other criteria.

by roach on Jul 12, 2011 1:01 PM CDT reply actions

TCU just came off the board. We are on the clock …

by Brian @ BCI on Jul 12, 2011 1:41 PM CDT reply actions

I go with the consensus… Ole Miss.

by Bob in Houston on Jul 12, 2011 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

Our commissioner is going to be happy.

by Vasherized on Jul 12, 2011 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

Looks like the 8th round went S. Carolina, BYU, Utah, Arizona State and TCU. 12-Pack picked Virginia to end the round, then Boston College to start the 9th.

It’ll be 10 picks ‘til 12-Pack is up again. Exceedingly slim pickings by then . . . Colorado, Purdue, Tech might be as good as it gets. I’ve liked S. Florida as an 11th or 12th round pick for some time. Another Big Ten wouldn’t be dreadful, but Indiana and Minnesota don’t have big-time football commitments, which probably leaves Purdue — though Northwestern is in a good TV market.

by edsp on Jul 12, 2011 3:23 PM CDT reply actions

BC over Ole Miss? I demand an explanation.

by nordberg on Jul 12, 2011 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Nickname this the Wet conference. Every school in a state that touches some body of water.

by Bob in Houston on Jul 12, 2011 3:37 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah well they should have taken Arizona St and Ole Miss and called it the wet conference for entirely different reasons.

by nordberg on Jul 12, 2011 3:43 PM CDT reply actions

PERV ON!

by Vasherized on Jul 12, 2011 3:54 PM CDT reply actions

Clemson is better than UConn or Okie St., but I think Pitt, Illinois and Mizzou were the better options in terms of all criteria, with the slight possibility of hot tang. Thing is, any hot tang from South Carolina only maintains its superiority as long as it doesn’t employ its vocal cords.
