The Rumors Of Auburn's Demise Are Not Exaggerated
Thought you all might enjoy reading my take on the prospects for 2011 Auburn Football that I put up on the Mothership.
Though they're currently ranked in the AP, USA Today, and Sports Illustrated preseason polls, I think that's lazy halo effect and I believe they'll be fortunate to go 7-5 and finish 4th or 5th in the SEC West. That's a 7 game swing from last year's 14-0 and one of the more dramatic changes in fortune for a national champion in the last few decades.
Excerpt:
Human psychology is a curious thing and though Auburn fans logically understand what they've lost, they won't fully process that fact until mid-October. Seeing a team dressed just the like unbeatable guys from last year getting worked over is a test of cognitive dissonance.

Dammit, its under your real name. That’s like un-masking Batman in front of the White House press corp.

Yeah, definitely not the demise I was hoping for.

Yeah, sorry. Still waiting on the NCAA for that one. In the meanwhile, you can console yourself by watching a 7 game swing in wins.

Going from one pseudonym to another obviously-fake name doesn’t really count as unmasking.

I’m not as concerned about the unmasking as I am about those rolled-up t-shirt sleeves.
Who’s dressing you, man, Clipper Cooper?

I too was hopeful of learning the bag man’s (men’s) name and bank accounts and photos…
I hope their test of cognitive dissonance is as painful as mine was.

You’ll be waiting a good long while my friend if you’re waiting for the NCAA to find the goods. It seems these days Yahoo does all the dirty work. If someone else doesn’t uncover the dirt and lay it with full documentation on the NCAAs doorstep they will stay blissfully ignorant. Except of course for the occaisional baby seal clubbing of a school like Georgia Tech that has no signicant national pull, so they can have the appearance of being proactive.

NYB: The NCAA has always piggybacked, whether it was on newspapers/TV, etc., or self-reporting.

I thought you were talking about scam newton bringing them down. ESPN was scrolling across the screeb that the guy claiming to know the identity of the bag man has been subpoenaed to talk to the NCAA about Auburn. Sure is a lot of smoke for there not to be any wrong doings.

I would not be so sure. I’ll guess we lost as much or more off the 2005 team and the next year we did pretty well.
VY*, Nordgren
Huff*
C Griffin*
D Thomas*
J Scott*
Rod Wright
A Hall*
A Harris
R Taylor (sort of)

Star indicate NFL starters (at some point). Yeah that team lost 7 NFL starters including the OROY and the best DB in college football.

We returned 13 starters, our OL, Jamaal Charles, our best WR, and Michael Griffin in the secondary.
That 2006 Texas team would thump 2011 Auburn. People don’t understand what Fairley, Ziemba, Newton meant to that team not to mention losing 12 other senior starters.
Watch and see.

Not as “dramatic” as going from MNC runner-up to 5-7 with home losses to UCLA, Iowa State, Baylor, and the Aggies.

Oooo! A picture. Kinda fuzzy, but you’re still cuter than I thought you’d be. I always imagined a scrawny little white guy with glasses and questionable skin care habits.
And the article was interesting, too.

"Seeing a team dressed just the like unbeatable guys from last year getting worked over is a test of cognitive dissonance."
To say nothing as to what it will do to their pocketbooks.
In Vegas, Auburn opened at 80/1 to win the BCS and as of this week it was 75/1. They also opened at 30/1 to win the SEC and it was all the way down to 20/1.

Yep. Auburn is bad. People like to hold onto their biases. Even Vegas had some huge line in favor of Auburn.
People just can’t break a team down and assess it for what it is.

Utah St quit playing once they got up 10. Oh well. Point still holds.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 3, 2011 2:24 PM CDT reply actions
Whatever anyone’s opinion of Auburn, justifyably so, Gus Malzahn is one of the best if not the best OC’s in college football. That makes up for a multitude of sins (pun intended). They will be a pretty good team by the second half even if the offense has to carry the entire load.
by Jake Lonergan on Sep 3, 2011 2:28 PM CDT reply actions
jake,
gotta disagree, only reason they came back was because utah st. secondary was terrible, every catch was made without a defender withing five to ten yards. also auburn’s d is not good, their line was getting dominated most of the game. they may be better in the second half, but as long as vegas keeps making them favorites, im betting against them
by eloy on Sep 3, 2011 2:36 PM CDT reply actions
Agree with eloy. Utah State melted down.
They’ll be lucky to go 6-6.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 3, 2011 2:46 PM CDT reply actions
Reasonable people can disagree, but I’m not sure what you’re disagreeing with. The post was primarily about their OC and I damned sure didn’t compliment their defense. I also didn’t even imply that Auburn is a good team at this point. USU fucked up but AU took advantage and the new guy under center ran the offense and led them to two quick scores to win. Hence the props to Gus.
If you diasagree that they’ll be a pretty goos team by end of year, I ‘m cool with that opinion. As for me, I expect them to get better every week win or lose, like us, and 6-6 in the SEC West with their youth isn’t an unsuccessful season. I think it’s comparable to an 8-4 season for us (which I would consider successful), given the disparity in schedules.
by Jake Lonergan on Sep 3, 2011 3:11 PM CDT reply actions
its all good, should of said i disagreed with auburn being good at the end of the season, mazlahan is a good oc though, should be getting a head coach job after this season most likely
after they showed the conference schedule during the game, i was thinking that they might go 0’fer, was just brutal, no team ranked over 19 i think(as of right now)
by eloy on Sep 3, 2011 3:24 PM CDT reply actions
No prob, eloy. I saw the upcoming games too and “brutal” is an apt description. Then I started thinking of Aggy tiptoeing through that mine field in 2012 with an untested QB and all I could do was smile.
