Boring CFB Saturday Open Thread of Mundanity
While the Longhorns enjoy their second bye week of the season, the rest of college football finds itself embroiled in a series of boring, one-sided dull-fests. But that won't stop you, faithful denizen of Barking Carnival, from forming strong opinions on the mundane slate of games streaming forth from your television and succumbing to the overwhelming impulse to share said opinions here, in the Boring CFB Saturday Open Thread of Mundanity.
Opine away!

Two thoughts to kick this motherfucker off:
1. We’d better beat Kansas.
2. Kansas State is probably going to skull rape the Horns. Again.

Where the hell is Gundy’s visor? I realize that Pinkel puts the “prick” in Golf Prick, and is tough to beat on that score, but I’m really disappointed that Gundy didn’t come to play.

Mack needs to designate one coach on his staff to do nothing, but recruit the kids Clemson is recruiting at defensive end and wide receiver.
Goodness gracious they have some freaking athletes at those positions and in some cases you can’t tell the difference between the two.

The three games after the KU game to me will decide how the Horns’ season ends up. Each of the schools looks weak on defense, but that is facing offenses that either have some balance to them or are really proficient on one side of the ball.
After watching KSU and MU today it could be a very interesting stretch of games.

Chip Kelly may be a questionable recruiter, but he’s on a whole different plane of existence as an offensive coach than anyone else in the game. I wouldn’t be opposed to offering him 5mm bones or clams or whatever a year to be the next Texas head coach. He wouldn’t need to associate with street agents to recruit to Texas, and the caliber of athletes he could get for his defense would be a pretty big improvement over what he can get at Oregon.

LSU is just plain scary, y’all.
We will beat KU, Tech, Mizzou and Baylor.
I don’t think Mack could beat a Snyder coached team if ole Bill was propped up in his casket on the sideline like Morgan Freeman outside the saloon in The Undefeated. It vexes me.
by Jake Lonergan on Oct 22, 2011 6:04 PM CDT reply actions
Pretty simple. Snyder has had better teams in most of those games. He choked against Ron Prince.

I realize that the Washington defense may not be that great, but I really love this Stanford offense. It isn’t all Luck, either. A lot of the time they line up with no wide receivers on the field and simply pound the ball play after play, with the defense lining up 11 in the box. I am really glad the OU/Tech game got delayed so we can watch this here in Austin.

Alabama and LSU just don’t look physically like other schools on defense.
Stanford and Wisconsin look similar on offense with the great offensive lines and the power running games, but those defenses (especially the front sevens) look unlike anyone else I have seen this year.

Did Texas pass on Brockers? I don’t follow recruiting very much.
As for your list of Aggies, nordberg, did they kick ass against ISU? I missed the game but the score does not look particularly impressive. I agree we could use any and all of those guys right now.
I have heard in regards to Andrew Luck that Texas never considered him because we had the top recruit in the country (Gilbert) and also that he was a lock to Stanford anyway. Is that inaccurate?
by DeepEddy on Oct 22, 2011 9:36 PM CDT reply actions
Brockers and Luck were both at a time where Texas wasn’t offering a kid out of Houston unless he was a lock.
I realize there are many on this board who keep saying Texas will have no problems with teams like Tech, Mizzou, and Baylor, but why do I think KU is a given and everything else is in play the rest of the season?
by Davey O'Brien on Oct 22, 2011 9:39 PM CDT reply actions
This is not a dominant OU team. Maybe they just care a lot more about beating Texas than anybody else, or maybe Texas just had a really bad day. But their defense is not stopping Tech from moving the ball, and their offense looks pretty beatable too.
And yet, I still find myself expecting them to pull away and win by 30+.
by DeepEddy on Oct 22, 2011 9:41 PM CDT reply actions
Davey, as for the posters here and their predictions for Texas’ future games this year, I have noticed some people predicting likely wins against those teams, but I would not say that is the consensus. I think most posters here feel that Texas is potentially a favorite in some of those games, but not a big favorite. I don’t remember Huck’s stats, but I think the highest probability he was predicting for a Texas victory in any particular game was around 60% (not including the KU game).
by DeepEddy on Oct 22, 2011 9:45 PM CDT reply actions
We did not have a >90% chance at signing Luck so we didn’t try. Plus we knew we had a sure thing (in terms of signability) in Gilbert the next year. I didn’t disagree with the decision at the time so I guess I can’t really bitch about it now.

I’ve been saying that for years. Big12 refs put in the ball in play for the sooners very quickly… not the same for other teams even when they run up tempo. It’s uncanny. It’s as obvious as the lack of offensive holding calls in the conf a few years ago.

First question for the Wiskey coach post game addressed the TO and I thought he answered it well. Said they had some time and thought they could get a punt return or block. Not a huge issue IMO with the TO call.

Once you go all out to stop the pass, you might as well pull the “coach on the field” safety (every college team seems to have at least one) and replace him with a CB who can fly.
Tech can score a lot of points and played good D in the first half against OU. The Texas vs Tech game now looks a lot tougher than it looked before this weekend. At least KU is still playing terrible D.

Wisconsin lost on a real long Hail Mary as the clock ran out. On the field the refs ruled that it was not a TD but the call was reversed in review. The only reason that MSU had enough time to score was because the UW coach was calling timeouts on D. Huge, huge loss for UW because they had a good chance to go undefeated and maybe slide into a MNC game.

by 55f100tx on Oct 23, 2011 1:13 AM CDT reply actions
That would be awesome to get more speed at safety. When you play these awesome passing teams you need safeties that can cover and recover. What I see in college football is that OCs all over the country pick on the “coach on the field” safety (who normally is white and not an awesome pass coverage guy). My guess is that Texas plays all nickel and dime vs Tech. It seems like it ought to be easier to play zone when in a dime since the zones are relatively small. Gideon might be better in zone than man (I don’t know).
by Kafka on Oct 23, 2011 1:25 AM CDT reply actions
Outside of Kansas I don’t see how anyone can view any remaining teams on our schedule as a likely win. Our offense has scored 10 points against OU (7 of those in garbage time) and 17 against OSU. We just saw Tech sodomize OU for 41 points, all offensive. Even the KU offense scored more against OU than we did. We’ve also scored the least points (offensive and total) against OSU in their conference games. If our defense had shown the ability to shut down Big12 caliber teams I’d feel better about our chances without much offense, but they haven’t.

After last week’s game, UT ranked 28 on the Sagarin predictor poll and KSU ranked 29. Let’s see how much the young Texas team improves before they play KSU.

I love the speed too, i still remember the NC game when Bush tried his pitch, he had 3 Horns closing in,all were faster than Bush, We have gone from Huff to Gideon,, Nothing against him, he just isnt Huff fast, I doubt Thompson is ether, but he is faster than most.

I love seeing OU lose, but I don’t think we’ll see it again this season. It took an awful offensive performance with at least 7 or 8 dropped passes and they still scored 38 and nearly won. I don’t see another repeat of that kind of off day again, except maybe against LSU or Bama if they were to somehow play them.
I think KSU will come to earth with a thud next week against OU. Having been brought back to reality OU will be more focused again and take out their frustation on KSU. In fact it could get pretty ugly for A&M and Baylor too. Stoops has a real penchant for running scores up in general, but even more so after a loss.

You think Tuberville got any extra pleasure out of beating Stoops given that Auburn got left out of the 2004 season national championship in favor of OU. Especially since OU got blown out by USC and didn’t look worthy of being there. This time he may have knocked OU out of a shot at the championship.

I am not a gambler so I don’t follow the odds but wasn’t Tech something like a 30 point dog?
If I was a no teeth having, trailer living, country music listening, wife beating, tobacco chewing, cheap beer drinking, coon dog owning Okie that would piss the hell out of me.
Wonder who is going to play the LSU/Bama winner for the title? Wisconsin lost, too.
I hope it’s not Stanford.

The OU loss also hurts Okie State if they win out.
LSU
Bama
Boise
Okie St
Stanford
Clemson
Adios Wiscy and OU. What a finish in east Lansing.

Tech’s upset of OU underlines one of the themes of the 2011 college football season. Ironic that a conference thought to be on life support is possibly the strongest in the country at the half-way point. OSU and OU are still the clear front-runners. But, besides Kansas there isn’t an easy out in the Big 12. K-St., Tech, aggy, Missouri and Baylor are all capable of beating anyone else on any given Saturday.
It will be very interesting to see how Texas fits in to that group as the season plays out. Our young team could not have a better gauntlet to run to reinforce the lesson that every game is a fight. Brick by brick, indeed.
by hopefulhorn on Oct 23, 2011 9:30 AM CDT reply actions
Dedi, how does Tech lose 2 games at home that were winnable, and then win a game on the road where no visiting team has won since 2005? This is what I love about college football. Maybe Mike Stoops on the sidelines was a jinx?

Vee-Ash,
You left the Fightin’ Sniders out of that list - intentional?
What I love about DeadFisher (and even the KT’s & Nates of the world) is that most FANs on here (no matter what team - Texas, Tech, A&M, OU) are realistic and sports-savvy -- not like the average Tech buffoon on other boards who puff their chest and claim Tubby is going to lead them to a BCS bowl this year :-)

GoHornsGo, what I don’t understand (on this thread anyway) is how posters can see Tech beat OU, who severely beat Texas and conclude that they think Texas will beat Tech. Now the game is a home game for you and Tech has their deficiencies, but you gotta think that one is a tossup. A&M played poorly on the road yesterday and won ugly. If we play that way on the rest of our schedule (except Kansas) we’ll get beat. I think OU overlooked Tech to some extent and it came back to bite them. Every team gets up to play Texas so you’re going to get everyone’s best shot. My personal take is that Tech vs. Texas will come down to turnovers and the team strengths offset (Tech Good O, so so D (Texas Good D, so so O). OSU hasn’t had their WTF game yet this year, so who knows when/if that’s going to happen. Interesting final half of the season. Stay tuned.

KT,
I don’t place much stock in the transitive property in College football. Using the same 3 teams as an example (OU, Tech, UT) look no further than 2008.
I’m not one claiming that we should easily beat Tech or anyone remaining on our schedule except Kansas. I honestly think we could win out or go 1-5, it’s really that much of a toss-up for me.

by nordberg on Oct 23, 2011 1:13 PM CDT reply actions
t1, I agree. Last year OSU beat A&M, A&M beat OU and OU beat OSU. I agree that the Tech vs. Texas matchup is the best of the 3 Nordberg mentioned. It’s about the time in a season when you think you have the teams figured out that the interesting shit starts to happen.
by Kilgore Trout on Oct 23, 2011 1:26 PM CDT reply actions
You can learn a lot from Tech’s victory over OU. Tech has a good QB and Tech was able to score a bunch of points vs a D that throttled UT. The Tech offense is much better than the Texas offense. Nobody here is claiming that the Texas defense is as good as the OU defense. Tech will probably score a lot of points vs Texas. Texas will need to score a lot of points vs Tech to win. Unless the Texas offense improves a lot before the Tech game, it is doubtful that it will win a shootout vs Tech. It is hard for an offense to score a bunch of points when the starting QB is a raw true frosh QB. Even a mediocre defense with a smart DC can pick on that young QB.
The bright side is that there are quite a few obvious changes that Harsin could make to the Texas offensive scheme to make it easier on the Texas QB and OL. Whether that happens before the Tech game remains to be seen.

And yet OU usually still controls its own destiny for many games after beating us. Even now OU still controls its own destiny and has an outside chance to play for all the marbles. Stoops gives the OU fans hope deep into most seasons. Our hope usually makes it to the OU game where it is replaced by hope for the 10-win season — oh goodie.

“If we’re considering the 90th percentile the “elite” mark (that basically represents the nation’s Top 12 or so), then OU has produced an elite product in 10 of the last 11 years. No other program can say that — not Florida, not Alabama, not Texas, not USC, not LSU, etc."

question regarding ou’s brandon williams.
the participation report shows that he didn’t enter the game. given the illness that befell their walk-on rb, any clue why williams didn’t see the field? sooner fans last night seemed to expect him to play in the second half, so if there is an injury or something, it isn’t generally known.

+1
Another 5-7 season looks like a definite possibility.

I don’t “love” Stoops. I find the guy to be a Grade A asshole.
But I’m not so blinded by my hatred of OU that I can’t give the guy credit. Mack’s record compared to Stoops looks like shit, in terms of conference titles & head-to-head match ups. Mack has given us the 2 WORST losses in the series, and a 3rd that’s up there as well. Furthermore, Mack had a year’s head start AND walked into a much better situation than Stoops did. Finally, UT has a helluva lot more in terms of resources than OU.

Kilgore, we avoided the critical mistakes we have been making and the defense is getting better. However, I think more of this had to do with the fact we were the first real passing team OU has faced this season and Doege was the first legit QB. I’ll be curious if they look so bullet proof the rest of the season now that the Landry Jones blueprint has been published on defense. He’s a highly skilled passer capable of executing junior high level reads. If you take his first option away, he chunks the ball away. If you make him move his feet, he will throw you something up. We dropped 2 or 3 picks. Should be interesting to see if they bounce back or the wheels start coming off. They can’t run the ball well enough to win this year.
by dedfischer on Oct 23, 2011 4:40 PM CDT reply actions
dedfischer – Not taking anything away from what Tech did, but OU receivers had 7 or 8 flat out drops. Some of that was because Landry was dancing around and not setting himself, but the passes were still very catchable. Tech did get some pressure on Landry, but it didn’t look near as much as Landry seemed to think it was. In general, I don’t expect his receivers to have another day like that again outside of playing LSU or Bama and the pressure they can create.
Having lost now I think OU will be pissed and feeling like they have nothing to lose from here on out. As bad as OUs offense looked for a good part of the game they still put up 38. I just don’t think they’ll play that bad again on offense, and nobody else on their schedule can outscore them without those offensive struggles.
by Nunna Yo Bizness on Oct 23, 2011 5:57 PM CDT reply actions
Dedfisher – Just to be clear though Tech played a hell of a game. The offense seemed unstoppable and the defensive backs with their coverage of OU recievers were particularly impressive. I think they did what no one else will do this year, and given what Texas did against OU we certainly have no room to minimize the accomplishment. In fact, the game made clear to me that all the people who have been looking at Tech as a probable win may need to recalibrate those expectations.

When Colt was a redshirt freshman, the horn O scheme was optimized for Colt. He was not asked to make throws he could not make and he almost always ran out of the shotgun. He had a real good OL, good receivers, and better than good TBs.
Ash is a true frosh and has to line up under center most of the time (except on obvious passing downs). The horns O scheme is optimized for the running game (which is doing well). The horns OL is better at run blocking than pass blocking. The horns runners are good. Maybe the horns O scheme should be adjusted somewhat to help out Ash. Ash would probably benefit from running out of the shotgun most of the time, throwing short, easy throws more and intermediate throws less. The footwork would be much easier for Ash, he could throw much quicker, and he would see the field much better. It would also help Ash to throw more on first down.
Would putting Ash mostly in the shotgun (except on obvious running downs) be a serious blow to the horns running attack?

I haven’t read the comments, yet. I can’t wait to see how the apologists are spinning Tech’s win on OU’s home field. I especially want to know why our 4 and 5 star recruits and inexperienced quarterbacks played so much worse than Tech’s 2 and 3 star recruits and inexperienced quarterback. Oh, and how their crappy coach managed to have them ready to survive the surge when our Mr. Football did not.
