Now Starting For Your Houston Texans - Matt Leinart
The Houston Texans, riding a 4-game win streak into their by week, will trade one QB named Matt for another QB named Matt.
The Texans discovered today that starting quarterback Matt Schaub suffered a season-ending foot injury in the 2nd quarter of the Texans 37-9 win over Tampa Bay -- even though he continued to play.
Matt Leinart, who signed on with the Texans last season, will be the starter against Jacksonville in two weeks. Leinart was drafted 10th overall by Arizona in 2006 and appeared in 12 games as a rookie, throwing 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He broke his collarbone in the fifth game of the next season, Kurt Warner took over and Leinart was essentially done as a Cardinal.
Leinart was a 3-year starter for USC, posting 37 wins and was named the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner.
I do seem to remember however, that his college career ended badly for him.

Trade for Vince, leads them to Super Bowl win. Houston wonders what could have been if they had just drafted him in the first place. Vince is vindicated, Houston finally wins the big one and promptly cuts him in the summer, because Vince “couldn’t learn the playbook and the team followed him instead of Kubiak.” Houston goes7-9, Vince gets picked up by Ravens replaces Flacco and goes 14-2 and wins his 2nd straight Superbowl.

It’s not clear yet that Schaub is gone for the season. Shefter says he is, but he is seeing a specialist tomorrow. It’s a lis franc injury, but best case scenario is that he is out only 6 weeks, which could still salvage a playoff run. Hopefully.

Six minutes.. Dejavu. Felt good to have that kind of year in 2005-6. Got lost in the moment. Great video. This article was about what/who now?

Bartoncreek, I love it. I’m gonna try it on Madden just to see what happens.

Watch Vince’s block at 2:57. Priceless.

Matt lived just up the street from me when he was playing partying here in the desert. We still want our money back! Much better in the hot tub with the four ASU chicks than on the playing field.
Biggest sin was begging the staff to draft “someone to block for me” in his 2nd year, so with the # 5 pick in the first round the Cardinals selected the great Levi Brown from State Penn, passing on a fragile (or so they said) RB from Oklahoma that I thought would be a great fit, after watching him run with speed and strength and passion vs Texas. Kid named Adrian Peterson … didn’t screw that up too badly, did they?

Leinart will be fine. The Texans make QBing pretty easy. Good backs, great run scheme, Andre Johnson comes back after the bye, Daniels underneath.
by Scipio Tex on Nov 14, 2011 9:11 PM CST reply actions
Texans should have drafted VY and his OC, GD. Unlike jeff fischer, He let Vince PLAY his Game!

“Leinart will be fine … Andre Johnson comes back after the bye, Daniels underneath.”
I dunno Scipio, he stunk it up in Arizona even with two Pro Bowl quality receivers, Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald.
Once he broke his collarbone Kurt Warner came in and did a great job of taking them to the Super Bowl, and Leinart was cut after Warner retired. Even his college coach didn’t want him in Seattle, a team in really bad shape at QB (Clipboard Jesus Whitehurst and Tarvarius Jackson?) …

You’d better be right, Scip, or I’m holding you responsible for my broken NFL-heart and shattered NFL-dreams. Don’t get my hopes up.
Seriously, this news sucks. I wasn’t expected Super Bowl, but watching this team has been tons of fun these past few weeks. Hopefully their run game doesn’t suffer the same fate as the Longhorn’s this past weekend.
by Sasha is a Longhorn Dog on Nov 14, 2011 9:25 PM CST reply actions
As much as I love VY, he wasn’t and is not the answer at QB for the Texans.
At all. Ever.
Leinart will be fine, just like Scip states. All he has to do is hand off to Foster and Tate, and run a few PA to Andre, OD, and JJ. The Defense will take care of the rest.
by Kasey on Nov 14, 2011 9:33 PM CST reply actions
Leinart’s NFL suckiness requires no recounting.
The question is whether Houston can score enough points to allow the Texans to go 3-3 down the stretch and still win the division over Tennessee.
They will.
Obviously, without Schaub, they have no playoff run in them.

Leinart has not been the same since that game. Glad im in Cowboy country.

55f100tx,
Vince really doesn’t look like he is all that interested in playing any more. Look completely lost the brief time he played for Philly.
by Davey O'Brien on Nov 14, 2011 10:04 PM CST reply actions
Vince would have won way too many games for the Texans liking. Who wants high expectations in the NFL. 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 good enough to keep your job when you’ve never been and will never go to the promised land. Titans and Texans m.o., imo. Championships are for cut throat losers. 8-8 is fair and fun. Always next year.
by Bartoncreek on Nov 14, 2011 10:08 PM CST reply actions
What was really crazy was that the Texans are the No. 1 seed in the AFC as of today and probably would have been favored in all of their games.
Now? As Scip says, 10-6 or so.
by Bob in Houston on Nov 14, 2011 10:19 PM CST reply actions
I’m thinking 12-4 with the only remaining loss to @ Cinci. But all games are winnable. Even with Matty Lite at QB

When I finally publish my seminal work cataloguing and defining all the various forms of douche, I will call Matt Leinart up and see if he will pose for the cover photo.
by burntorangejuice on Nov 14, 2011 10:29 PM CST reply actions
Scip makes a good point. Leinart could not be coming into a lower stress situation for a back-up QB: sound offensive system, outstanding running game behind a solid OL and arguably the best WR in the game coming back shortly. Besides WR talent, Leinart had none of that going for him in AZ. Hard to imagine a more ideal 2nd chance.
Houston’s remaining schedule is well suited to working a new man into the lineup: bye, at Jacksonville, Atlanta, at Cincy, Carolina, at Indy, Tennessee. Let’s see how things go.
Let’s also see the exact nature of Schaub’s injury and prognosis before jumping to conclusions.
by hopefulhorn on Nov 14, 2011 10:46 PM CST reply actions
Ol’ Phillips has their D playing solid football. Great run game. All Leinart has to do is not fuck up. Plus AJ is coming back after the bye so there is another sure target. AFC south is pretty bad behind the Texans anyways.

by Saul on Nov 15, 2011 8:17 AM CST reply actions
The bootleg and playaction game that Kubiak runs would fit VY very well. I’ve never understood the local hacks saying he wouldn’t be a fit for the Texans offense.
by WBT on Nov 15, 2011 9:00 AM CST reply actions
Mainly because Kukiak wants the offense run a certain way and it doesn’t allow a great deal of ad libbing by the quarterback. Routes are timing and accuracy and things are set in a certain order.

Eagles season is shot so if you are Andy Reid do you play Vick w the multiple injuries against the Giants or do you sit him?
If he sits do the Eagles play Young or Kafka? If Kafka plays then I think Vince is looking for a new team next year.
by Davey O'Brien on Nov 15, 2011 10:55 AM CST reply actions
Vince would have to be a salesman in that case.
by Bob in Houston on Nov 15, 2011 11:28 AM CST reply actions
Vince would have to be a salesman in that case.
Yeah, I can’t see any reason a team in the NFL would have any interest in a guy with a 30-17 career win/loss record as a starter, and a QB rating his last year as a starter that would put him at #4 in this year’s QBs. That’s clearly not enough value for you to find out if it was just a combination of immaturity which he’s outgrown and an isolated personality clash with an individual coach that caused the problems.
by Nunna Yo Bizness on Nov 15, 2011 1:50 PM CST reply actions
Nunna,
The Philly situation to me is an interesting one. There were teams this year that needed quarterbacks, but opted to look elsewhere which means nothing other than he didn’t get the chance to start. I thought going to Philly would be a good situation as Reid has a rep with quarterbacks and it is obvious he doesn’t care about about the past as much as where you are headed with your career.
That’s why I made the comment about VY’s future in Philly if Kafka starts ahead of him. Vicks not going anywhere, but you know he is going to get hurt so they need a back-up they can trust and afford. VY has been with Philly long enough he should know the offense and Reid has some ideas about VY. Guess we will find out soon enough.

I never hated on Leinert too bad for that comment, because he was still pretty dazed from the massive hit put on him by Aaron Ross (PRETTY sure it was Ross). Dude was clearly concussed.
by TexanNick on Nov 15, 2011 4:07 PM CST reply actions
Leinhert was awesome in that game. He lit us up in the 2nd half. USC did not lose that game as much as VY ripped that trophy out of their slimy gollum like hands. With all that said, I would take Matt Leinhert over Vince Young as my QB in the NFL 10 times out of 10. VY has a great Win’Loss record, but I believe that was more due to the Tennessee defense than any outstanding play by Vince. I think he struggled to learn the offense and hampered what should have been much better teams. So he’s 30-17, he should be 40-7. Don’t confuse team wins with adequate or good QBing.
by ethorn on Nov 15, 2011 5:16 PM CST reply actions
Et horn rides up in tje clown car and then proceeds to shit all over the place.
In the same 5 year span VY went 30-17 his team was below .500 when he didn’t play, but clearly they were a little bit of competant QB play away from a team of the decade type run (over 800 winnin percentage)
Comments like that, and on the ga$e thread last week make me hate so many in our fanbase.
by wulaw horn on Nov 15, 2011 7:19 PM CST reply actions
If your a tailback your game will improve with VY at Qb. no doubt about that. He brings another dimension to the game. Think he couldnt run The Tebow Bronco offense. Hell Yeah!
And he throws much better than Tebow.

ethorn -
did you even pay attention in 2009? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Tennessee_Titans_season
VY may not be a typical pro-style QB but that isn’t to say that adjustments can’t be made. And to say that you would “take Matt Leinhert over Vince Young as my QB in the NFL 10 times out of 10” is just asinine.
“VY has a great Win’Loss record, but I believe that was more due to the Tennessee defense”: Pretty sure the defense didn’t win this one http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=291129010

Vince needs more freedom. Something the Texans offense does not allow. Strict west coast with very very few audibles. All that being said the trade deadline is over anyways so no way he becomes a Texan. Matty Lite should be fine if his accuracy is anything like it was this pre season. He has definitely been putting the work in according to the Team, Preparing for this day.
by Duderino on Nov 16, 2011 3:35 AM CST reply actions
“Vince needs more freedom” – why is that? How many coaches or GMs want a QB that needs freedom? I wouldn’t think too many. They want someone they can count on to learn, run and manage the offense. I think Leinhert, while unimpresive at Az, would be a much better game manager. He wouldn’t be my first, or in my top 10, but he would be above Vince on that list.
by ethorn on Nov 16, 2011 4:39 AM CST reply actions
ethorn, you are as smart as Doug Rader was when he criticized LaRussa’s first championship team by saying, “They’re winning, but they’re winning ugly.”
You’re as smart as Ruben Sierra when he said about the Yankees, “You know the problem with the Yankees? They’re just all about winning.”
by TaylorTRoom on Nov 16, 2011 6:55 AM CST reply actions
Maybe Leinart and Young spent the last two seasons with their noses buried in the playbook, their butts in the weight room, and their arms on the practice field working on deep outs with the back-up WRs.
We’ll find out one way or the other.
by G.O.F. on Nov 16, 2011 11:16 AM CST reply actions
Nunna, the point is that if Vince is healthy and is not chosen over Kafka when the offense is designed for a player with Vince’s skills, he has a big problem.

FWIW, Leinart has some pretty good Fantasy match-ups down the stretch. If you need a back-up, he has a decent potential to outperform the other detritus on the waiver wire.
