obligatory, any word on brown/bergeron/robinson post

Good news guys: I’m healthy and ready to play tonight.
by UT07 on Nov 19, 2011 5:39 PM CST reply actions
Anyone know when dgb got to Austin and when he is leaving?
by thebigE on Nov 19, 2011 5:40 PM CST reply actions
I don’t know BigE. Personally, I’m hoping someone takes him to the Yellow Rose prior to departure.
by TexanNick on Nov 19, 2011 5:44 PM CST reply actions
I hope they take him the the Rose during the game instead of watching Snyder give Mack his medicine.
by The General on Nov 19, 2011 5:50 PM CST reply actions
If we can avoid choking on any of Snyder’s Werther’s Originals we’ve got a chance.
by Wyatt on Nov 19, 2011 5:51 PM CST reply actions
Brown and Bergeron can both play. Game time decision.
Shipley is out.
by Scipio Tex on Nov 19, 2011 5:51 PM CST reply actions
Good thing we’re not playing in Pullman today.

“Brown and Bergeron can both play. Game time decision.

So same as last week?

Notre Dame plays rock music over the stadium loud speakers while the opposing team is calling out offensive signals. They also had the band Chicago play at halftime with their band, and Bon Jovi is honorary band leader tonight? Huh?

poster on OB saying DGB is sitting with J Gray…delightful news

Watch out for the Paladins next year. Any team that can put up over 30 points on an SEC D must be on their way up.
by bHero on Nov 19, 2011 6:27 PM CST reply actions
I don’t think MB will be totein the rock tonite … maybe mighty Joe B.
Expect lots of passing & QB draws as ksu pass D sucks beeg time. Some play action &the bubble screens.
Should be a big game for tight ends…. time for Irby’s resurrection.

they have bergeron as doubtful too. time to start drinking heavily.
by brett on Nov 19, 2011 6:54 PM CST reply actions
yeah, i figured earlier that neither would play. But had a little hope when flipping through the Dell Children’s visit photos on texassports.com. Brown wasn’t wearing a boot on his foot and Bergeron was lifting kids up on his shoulders. Game still falls on Ash regardless.

Never seen a point spread this out of touch with reality. I find it hard to see a scenario where we win this game. I see it as KSU by 14+ points. Sure hope I’m wrong.

I told my Vegas friends to bet their homes. I can’t bet against the Horns, but others should take advantage of this casino error.

Well, it seems there was a successful adjustment available.

Two straight throws behind open receivers. Not good.

Still looking for some sign that the light has gone on for Ash. Still not seeing it.
Quandre Diggs is nasty.

Shitty kicking game costs us 20 yards of field on the exchange.
by Tex Long on Nov 19, 2011 7:20 PM CST reply actions
Tonight will be defining for Ash. Let’s see what he does once he settles down.
by lurkerinthedark on Nov 19, 2011 7:20 PM CST reply actions
If Ash practiced like he played that first series, I understand why Harsin was getting on him.
by TexanNick on Nov 19, 2011 7:20 PM CST reply actions
Looks like Mack was playing the long con on that Whaley recruitment – turning into a star DT juuuuuuust like he planned.
by nobis60 on Nov 19, 2011 7:22 PM CST reply actions
3rd straight pass behind. Missing easy throws. Not happy.
by TexanNick on Nov 19, 2011 7:23 PM CST reply actions

How did our QB position turn into this???

Man each throw is getting worse than the one before it.
by nobis60 on Nov 19, 2011 7:23 PM CST reply actions
Now Klein is “Honey Badger” too? Is this now a blanket nickname?
by Garry Crowbar on Nov 19, 2011 7:24 PM CST reply actions
another game where the opposing teams offense is based on Longhorn turnovers. This makes me sick.
by kemit on Nov 19, 2011 7:24 PM CST reply actions

by hoyahorn on Nov 19, 2011 7:31 PM CST reply actions
I guess they won’t be letting us return kickoffs tonight…
by UT07 on Nov 19, 2011 7:31 PM CST reply actions

by kemit on Nov 19, 2011 7:32 PM CST reply actions
I’m still amazed Monroe doesn’t touch the ball more often.
by maninblack on Nov 19, 2011 7:32 PM CST reply actions
Case may be a whiny tit who can’t take a hit and has a helicopter dad…. but I think he’s a better passer than Ash. Execution is not pretty but I think he at least has some clue what to do. Ash just looks lost.
by spit and tears on Nov 19, 2011 7:32 PM CST reply actions
can we quit blaming mack for letting this position get to where it is. nobody predicted the GG mess.

Bergeron is going to play. Fuck yeah we’re playing for the Cotton Bowl!
by maninblack on Nov 19, 2011 7:33 PM CST reply actions

that rugby kicking scares the hell out of me everytime he slowly rolls out with it.
by kemit on Nov 19, 2011 7:38 PM CST reply actions
% chance that the offense actually scores tonight: I’m gonna say 75%, simply because I think we might need turnovers and I am not convinced we can sustain any long drives.
by spit and tears on Nov 19, 2011 7:39 PM CST reply actions
CJ in the wildcat is only a foreshadowing of our real secret weapon: Poehlman in the wildcat. Or, the mulletcat, if you will.
by hoyahorn on Nov 19, 2011 7:39 PM CST reply actions
In spite of the hiccup, we got something going and changed the field podition. Our defense has been excellent so far, so that drive was effective to that extent.
by lurkerinthedark on Nov 19, 2011 7:39 PM CST reply actions
All front 4 standing on that last play….crazy.
by Regulator20 on Nov 19, 2011 7:43 PM CST reply actions
Better question would be % chance defense outscores the offense. Damn near happened last week.
by TexanNick on Nov 19, 2011 7:43 PM CST reply actions
Our offense has scored 3 points in the last 5 quarters of football
by RS on Nov 19, 2011 7:43 PM CST reply actions
Team with the least number of turnovers wins this game. Not a great situation to be in versus Bill S.
by Art Vandelay on Nov 19, 2011 7:44 PM CST reply actions
Ash seems like he sucks. Brett Smith is also a true freshman and does not suck. In Fact he is awesome for a true freshman. Period. End of sentence. I eagerly await the “practice reports” where Ash appears to be checking off his jock strap. Not good. He. is. Not. Good. At. All. He is the best option we have? this is criminal.

by lurkerinthedark on Nov 19, 2011 7:51 PM CST reply actions

by nobis60 on Nov 19, 2011 7:52 PM CST reply actions
Nice kick. Defense and special teams are frigging outstanding so far. And it looks like we’re gonna completely waste those efforts.
by TexanNick on Nov 19, 2011 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Bill Snyder is one exceptionally well-coiffed senior. Odds are, his pre-game ablutions include one or more of the following:
1. High Karate
2. Old Spice

4. Vitalis
5. Brylcreem

by ultralight on Nov 19, 2011 7:55 PM CST reply actions
Jeez. Klein looked worse than Ash on that throw.
I’m surprised we’re throwing it as much as we are. It’s almost like Harsin is trying to force Ash into figuring it out.

by Art Vandelay on Nov 19, 2011 7:57 PM CST reply actions
Again, it astounds me what a complete dumpster fire our QB position has become. And it further astound me that our offensive coordinator goes away from the only facet of the offense that works.
by spit and tears on Nov 19, 2011 7:57 PM CST reply actions
Not sure we will win this game… but for you gamblers I’d go big on UT in the 2nd half.
by Art Vandelay on Nov 19, 2011 7:58 PM CST reply actions
I think the Offense in general has looked okay. But we are a playmaker at QB away.
Remember Ash was a Greg Davis special.
by Monahorns on Nov 19, 2011 7:58 PM CST reply actions
Box score observations: Klein has attempted more passes already this year than last year. He has 7 carries.
OU in the first quarter has 5 penalties for 64 yards. Man.
by Fritz on Nov 19, 2011 7:58 PM CST reply actions
Say what you will about GD, but we had a pretty good run with QBs under his coordination.

Brett Smith = awesome true freshman QB. David Ash has not scored a TD pass since October 8th. Good thing he is checking his WRs in practice. Can’t wait to see him actually perform. If Case and Ash are the best we have, we didn’t recruit very well/

Yes! 3 points. We’re going to miss Tucker next year.
by Fritz on Nov 19, 2011 8:03 PM CST reply actions
Tucker may be a scary punter, but he’s a fine FG kicker.
This game might compete with LSU-Alabama in sheer drama.
by lurkerinthedark on Nov 19, 2011 8:03 PM CST reply actions
I heart Diaz. I think we got the best of the coaching carousel, and I love our defense!
by java on Nov 19, 2011 8:03 PM CST reply actions
we can’t line up and throw AT ALL. not short, not long, not at all. who else in the country can’t throw the fucking ball at all? are we like the worst passing offense in the country? what the fuck?
by Noonan on Nov 19, 2011 8:04 PM CST reply actions
Tucker’s punting and kickoffs have been hit or miss this year, but as a placekicker he is one of the best in the conference. Maybe the guy at OK ST is better.
by DeepEddy on Nov 19, 2011 8:04 PM CST reply actions
Well at least Tucker got us somewhere.
Put me in the “give Case a shot camp.” How could our QB play get worse. Really? How could it get worse? Maybe if Case fumbles when he gets hit.
This anemic shitty offense will not be able to hang with Baylor or aggy.

Diaz’s looks have Kstate completely bamboozled. Brilliant.
by TexanNick on Nov 19, 2011 8:08 PM CST reply actions
Our passing game has been miserable ever since Colt left. Since then we have tried 3 different QBs, and our passing game has been consistently terrible. Now it is certainly possible that all three QBs just aren’t very good, and I have seen plenty of evidence to suggest that.
However, it is also possible that the problems in the passing game are more than just the QB.
by DeepEddy on Nov 19, 2011 8:08 PM CST reply actions
Why do we have to give up such yardage on kicking?

by DeepEddy on Nov 19, 2011 8:10 PM CST reply actions
i just don’t get it. how can isu start a red shirt freshman and throw for over 350 yards and we got squat. It’s just incredible. we better hope brewer is the answer and that he can do it as a true freshman
by Noonan on Nov 19, 2011 8:10 PM CST reply actions
Our defense really, really, HATES football teams from Kansas.
by DeepEddy on Nov 19, 2011 8:11 PM CST reply actions

Damn, Klein looks like one of those cartoon characters with bandages all over him!
by HookEmLA on Nov 19, 2011 8:12 PM CST reply actions
All the momentum that the defense is giving us is lost when Ash comes back on the field. I have held my tongue on Ash since the OU game and can’t do it anymore. Can’t continue to give this kid the benefit of the doubt after the past couple of weeks.
by Secret Squirrel on Nov 19, 2011 8:14 PM CST reply actions
TexanNick,
Right back at yah. Ash is not the long term answer. I think this stretch of four/five games of no TD passes might be a record…even for a “true” freshman QB. Either throw a GD TD or get off the GD field.
And yes…sincerely thinking about the naked trampoline deal….

Klein isn’t right, but if the Vegas books were trying to set a trap line they might not have realized how much Ash would struggle. I stayed away from that line despite the temptation to jump on KSU, but the under is gonna get me a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue. They set that thing ten points too high.

Maybe Greg and Mack were telling the truth about Donald’s inability to learn the playbook. Ash clearly expected him to be on his left side on that play. Still, he should have checked before the snap.

But my point is when the OL can’t block consistently and the QB is struggling like this, the RBs will make little difference. Sure we may have 15-20 yards from broken tackles but it’s not enough. 6 points the last 6 quarters.

Terrible timeout call by Mack right after Collin Klein was sacked by Kheeston Randall and Jackson Jeffcoat for a loss of 7 yards to the Texas 47. After the sack, it was 3rd and 14 at TEX 47, Texas had the momentum and the timeout by Mack with 1:05 was absolutely brain dead. It gave KSU a chance to regroup and also gave KSU an extra 30 seconds to score in. WTF was Mack thinking, that his offensive juggernaut was go the length of the field to score in less than a minute? Absolutely moronic timeout.

Does anybody feel that they can confidently say that Ash is really the problem?

by DeepEddy on Nov 19, 2011 9:56 PM CST reply actions
I would have gone for it. you still have to score 7 either way. Worst case scenario if you don’t get it, they start it on the 10. Now we have to stop them on the 20+.
by Arriviste on Nov 19, 2011 9:57 PM CST reply actions
RGIII = a Qb. And we didn’t want him. We wanted him to be a WR and wasted our picks on GG, Ash, and McCoy’s brother. Nice. Nice.
by nikki32 on Nov 19, 2011 9:57 PM CST reply actions
Yeah this whole thing about ash is tiresome. As the 3rd down play showed, our receivers are pretty wretched more often than not. Ash makes plenty of bad decisions, but I have no way to really know if a lot of the misthrows are all his fault, or bad routes/timing on part of receivers. Whatver , he isn’t playing now so prefer to focus on what is a very winnable game if we can get one break

We have no QB’s. We did not recruit well. We have no quarterbacks. I know Case did his best. I also know that Ash is not a very good passer. He is not. And it would not matter if we had the best OC on the planet. Ash sucks. And the people who think he doesn’t need to start licking it.

by 55f100tx on Nov 19, 2011 10:26 PM CST reply actions
Yeah, I can’t put too much of this on Case. He did provide a spark, and he put some points on the board. And I think he’s thrown more TD’s in November than Ash has all year. We just have shitty Oline play, and our best receiver is down, and the situational play calling is suspect. First they handcuffed McCoy, then had him throw on 4 straight downs. Weird.
by TexanNick on Nov 19, 2011 10:26 PM CST reply actions
Well, I am thoroughly disappointed in our coaches. Our offense last year was unbelievably terrible. Not just bad for a superpower like Texas, but one of the worst I have ever seen in college football. I thought during the course of this season that we had improved on that, but now I am not sure anymore. During the last two games, it looked exactly the same as last year. I know everybody wants to talk about the QB, but our offensive line has been really awful in pass blocking all along, and during the last two games the run blocking was almost as bad. How long does Mack have to start scoring points? And for most of the season, I was willing to cut Harsin and Major some slack, but that is starting to wear a little thin. I know they have inherited a lot of problems, but there are a lot of teams with less talent that have far better offenses than us. Texas Tech scored consistently on KSU and Mizzou. How long do the new coaches have to start scoring points?
by DeepEddy on Nov 19, 2011 10:27 PM CST reply actions
I agree Nick. The playcalling was schizophrenic.
Is Mack interferring?

by ultralight on Nov 19, 2011 10:27 PM CST reply actions
Where is Scipio now? We need some wisdom on the board. This game was very winnable.
Unfortunately 6-6 truly looks like the most likely scenario. Who is madder at their coach now, us or A&M? Mack got us into this mess and Sherman underachieved with a talent-laden team.
by Cousin It on Nov 19, 2011 10:27 PM CST reply actions
Technically, receivers are supposed to catch anything they can touch. Regardless of where the ball went, the receiver had a play on it. Saying he needed the ball over the shoulder to the outside would be great. But it wouldn’t hurt if receivers could come up big or make an exceptional play too.
by kemit on Nov 19, 2011 10:28 PM CST reply actions
I thnk the problem with Case in the pocket is obviously his fear that the defender will pull his flag belt and the referee will whistle the play over, hence the absurd hip gyrations that occur whenever a defender breathes on him.

kemit, the play I was talking about was the one to Davis where he has to run outside the CB then around to the middle of the field.
I am not asking for a perfect ball. I am asking that McCoy gives Davis a chance to make a play. He clearly didn’t on that play. He threw it where the CB was not where the WR was.

This was a game the Horns had multiple shots at and just didn’t get it done. I love the defense god bless them but I have absolutely no faith in getting a turnover. And the returners gave the offense great field position to work from but the offense couldn’t get anything done. The defense got the opposing offense to punt but didn’t seem to matter. It’s frustrating. But, I actually had hope by the end of this game.

So, when Ash has bad numbers he sucks. Going into the last drive, if you take out the busted coverage TD pass that I could have thrown, they have similar numbers, but his numbers were bad because of the WRs. Some of you crack me up. Who gets the most snaps at QB vs ag, Case or Ash? Case, right? Having said that, Case appeared to have zero concept of clock management at the end of the game. It is hard to believe that he is a coach’s son, his ball security is terrible. At least Case somehow still has his confidence and can make some throws. Ash’s confidence seems to be shot.
It is hard to win with a poor QB and there seems to be a decent chance that Texas will still be weak at QB next season.

Good Lord, Nikki. Were you even watching?
Yes, Ash is a kid with a lot of learning to do and potential to develop, but that is exactly why he trumps McCoy; there is no potential to develop in McCoy, and not much of an arm even at middle distances.
Had Gilbert or Ash been in the game on the last play, there might at least have been an attempt at a Flutie gamewinner to Monroe or Goodwin deep. With McCoy dropping back from a 50-yard-line scrimmage line, you are guaranteed the ball falls 15 yards short.
Let’s be diplomatic, and just call McCoy’s last play a Fail Mary.
As for your hallucinogenic comparisons between high-school cheerleading and quarterbacking FBS ball, let’s keep this in mind:
FBS quarterback: Your opponents consist of eleven grown men, some of whom weigh 300 pounds or more and all of whom will cheerfully slam you to the ground. These eleven men are led by a defensive coordinator who specializes in creating exactly that outcome.
High-school Cheerleader: There is no opponent of any kind.
(Unless, of course, you count bulimia, stupidity, and the nagging insecurity that you are surrounded with prettier, sexier girls who, one day, will lead cheers in college.)

Great defensive performance. If we had a quarterback, we would be a force to be reckoned with. Not sure what can be done for next year. Neither quarterback on the roster seems to be the answer, and I hate to go through another freshman quarterback’s growing pains.

As puzzling as some of the playcalls were, its hard to get too down on Harsin. He has nothing at o-line, wr, qb and tight end, and nothing but injuries at rb.

I am not married to either QB. I think the question is still open. It was great to get the TD, but it was a great play call and there wasn’t a defender within 10 yards. Great conversion, but I am not all that impressed by it. I did watch the game, but look objectively. Take out the one play, and Case was 4-8 for 19 yards going into the last drive. Ash was 7/16. Case was 8/16 for the game. Neither has established themselves as even average. And the last two drives were just awful in terms of decision-making and execution. I would have played Ash there—if for no other reason that his arm is significantly stronger.
Bottom line, is that I agreed with taking Ash out and giving McCoy the chance. But I would have put Ash back in for the final drive. And Connor Brewer better come in ready to compete for the job. I hope that after extra practice and bowl preparation, spring drills, etc, one of the two will emerge as a competent QB, but I am not holding my breathe. Although I also remember the UT fan base whining about a redshirt freshman from Madison who ended up with a pretty good run. They are young. They will struggle. And we can hope that one of them will end up being “the man” but it is not looking all that bright right now!

I think the long break between aggie and baylor will get us some guys back healthy and we’ll have a decent shot to beat them. our defense will keep us in all three games we have left. we’ll have a good shot against whoever’s the Alamo Bowl opponent. We could still go 8-5, which would be a hell of a year, QB play not withstanding. or we could go 6-7, which would be a total disaster. If I had to pick I would say it’s more likely we win 8.

I don’t know who the hell should start at QB against A&M.
by ultralight on Nov 19, 2011 10:51 PM CST reply actions
It’s not the coaching that is schizophrenic, it’s the execution of the plays that are called. O-line had some great blocking, and also some bad blocking. Receivers couldn’t make plays to help the QBs. QBs couldn’t make throws.
I hope somebody gets suspended for that bullcrap kick-catch interference call. I understand that, given the complex interplay of variables involved in a football game, one can’t simply say “no bullcrap call, Texas wins . . .” but I think it is fair to say that it severely affected the momentum. And, obviously, if the correct call is made, we most likely score (at least a field goal), gain the lead, and momentum shifts our way.
Our defense is awesome. Seriously. They almost single-handedly won the game for us. The one series they really let us down was a series whose catalyst was a bullcrap call. (If it isn’t clear, I really think that, bottom-line, that kick-catch interference call cost us the game). This loss has gotta be especially tough for them.
Meanwhile, things suck for Harsin. Vis-a-vis his options in play calling, he’s gotta feel like a paralyzed man wearing lead armor. He is severely limited in his play calling, regardless of which QB is in the game. Ash can make things happen with his athleticism, but apparently somebody told him that a kitten dies every time he leads his receiver with his throw. Case can mostly hit quick short routes with accuracy, but he has the pocket presence of a threatened possum and absolutely no ability to do anything with his feet (c.f. Texas’ last offensive series).
Personally, I’m taking solace in the fact that, if you described a team with a good defense and a terrible offense, I wouldn’t expect them to win many games. Well, that team is us, and it’s helped me lower my expectations for what we can accomplish. Which is this: (a) we can play good defense, (b) hope for fluke offensive points, © cross our fingers that (a) and (b) keep things close, and (d) pray that there are no major referee screw ups which may disturb whatever fragile edge we might have.

Ransom, I am not saying they are great, I am just saying they should at least be average. And I am not really saying that it is all Harsin’s fault, but the man has to have some ownership of this shitshow by now. He is an adult, he knew what he was getting into, and he is getting paid a hell of a lot of money. I expect more. The same goes double for Major. He has been here for a while, and I know he has been trying to improve the situation, but he still owns it.

Go back to the rotating QBs at the beginning of the year like we did in the first few games. Agree that if Ash is in, he needs to run more. He seems to make mistakes when people are in his face. Most of his picks are when a defender is in front of him and he just randomly throws it up in the air. Play Ash in running situations that allows for the play action passes down the field. Put Case in on 3rd and 5 when his short passing game is beneficial.

Ash played horribly tonight, but I laugh at everyone for getting on Case’s jock for that one play to Irby. When the primary receiver is open by 10 yards its kind of hard to miss that. As my wife said to me after that play “why didn’t harsin call that play when Ash was in?” Other than than one play, Case looked awful too tonight.
Bottom line, we can choose between a guy with a strong arm and good legs who makes terrible decisions that turn into interceptions and a guy with a weak arm who panics in the pocket.

I will have to go back and dig through old emails, but I kept some with friends and family of mine calling for Vince’s head both his freshman and sophmore years. Funny how winning will make you forget his struggles. I would not put money on Ash or Case getting us back to where we need to be, and I am as frustrated as anyone else, but I guess I am just more hopeful than most that we can develop one of these guys into a successful QB with more time, experience and a full offseason with starters snaps.
I am not sure you can find many successful true freshmen QBs of teams coming off a 5-7 season who got 3rd string snaps until several games into the season.
Again, I am not an Ash homer, and yes he sucked tonight. But I don’t want to bury him before the staff has a chance to mold him with a full offseason (that Vince and Colt both had-along with a year on the bench to watch and learn).

DeepEddy: I’ll go Barkley, Luck, RG3, Jones.
I think Barkley has a better chance to go to a decent team. The Colts are atrocious at a LOT of positions, are poorly coached, and have a shitty front office. So Luck could be awesome and still get screwed. Jones could succeed by that logic too, but I just don’t think he’s that good. Wouldn’t sleep on RG3 though.

To all you saying that the TD pass was a gimme. Would Ash have made the play? Case hit him in stride and allowed Irby to make a play. If the last 2 games are any indication, Ash would have thrown it out of bounds or tried to thread the needle to another receiver.
No one is saying Case is awesome, but he made the play so give it a rest.

A&M blitzes so much it seems Ash should get the start b/c of his better legs and marginally better pocket awareness.
But I could see Case, b/c he hasn’t thrown it to the other team and our running game might be good enough to where we don’t need a strong armed QB. It’s not like we are asking our QB to do much in the passing game.
Basically, I’ll just go with screwed.

Really tough to see the guys fight so hard and still end up short. God I hate KSU. We’ll get ‘em next year. I’ll keep repeating that after ever loss until it comes true. Just a stellar effort by the defense. I’m really impressed with this group of guys and to think we return most of them next year. With Johnathan Gray coming in and some more experience at the quarterback position, including a bowl season worth of practices to develop the passing game, we have to be able to get a halfway competent offense to match our amazing defense.
I can’t imagine how excruciating it must have been for Fozzy to stand there on the sidelines and watch this game play out. Damn the luck. I will go to my grave believing we would have won this game with Fozzy playing. Hopefully Shipley is ready to go by Turkey Day. UT07. I think the win loss total might also have something to do with the surrounding cast. I have a Vince poster on my office wall. You will not find a bigger VY fan and homer than me. But his Freshman year, he had Ced, the big 3 at WR and a loaded OL and D. Not sure it is fair to compare the win loss of that team and Vince’s freshmen team and attribute the difference to the QB. Vince struggled as a Freshmen. He only through for more than 140 yards twice. And the fever pitch for a new QB would have been at this same level if not for the fact that they were still winning. Vince is THE reason we have a MNC, but Vince’s freshmen year they won in spite of the QB play even after he had a chance to watch and learn for a year. This year we don’t have that luxury.

What has Mack ever given back to UT to deserve this teflon standing? The Big Cigar and those like him need to persuade Mack to retire at the end of this season. I don’t think it’s being unreasonable to hope that people wouldn’t tell fans of the their own team pulling for their quarterback despite his struggles to “go fuck themselves.” Is it more reasonable to expect to be able to say things like that and not get called out or to expect people to display enough social intelligence to know better than that?

Our receivers are not very good. Mike Davis is afraid to get grass stains on his dress. McCoy has an amazing ability of scrambling right into a defender, even if there is only one around him. Ash needs work, but he also needs recievers who will catch a ball that hits them in the hands, even if it is thrown behind them. I cant wait for Trey Allen to graduate. Manny Diaz might make a good HC. My opinions from a sober viewing of our team.

Hopefully all you’re referring to is the way the message is delivered and not the stance of the message.
The worst thing for the Texas program is for no one to point out the ugly facts and just keep pumping sunshine. Ignoring cracks when things seem to be going well that will cause a stumble at the most inopportune time (like the absence of a running game for years that ends up getting our QB killed in the NC game and costing us a shot at the NC the year before).
Or when things are going poorly telling us how everything has been addressed and prosperity is just around the corner when it’s becoming more and more apparent to everyone that the QB to lead us back to success doesn’t seem to be on campus yet (and thus we’re years away from prosperity since no one is going to step on campus and win big without a year or two of experience.
Sunshine pumping and ignoring the signs that there are fatal flaws are how you allow a pathetic entity like GDGD to steal a paycheck for years beyond when he should have been out on his ass.
I’ve been an Ash defender and proponent all year, but with having been here early for Spring, then Fall practice, and now playing almost an entire season, inexpeience just doesn’t fly as an excuse for putting up a total of 6 points in two games.
And if you think things are bad on here now it’s gonna get downright ugly after we lose our last two and go 6-6, because I don’t even see that we can beat Baylor now much less A&M.

Moving on to the wide receivers, Has Davis ever been seen running through a pass. What i mean is he will catch a ball stop and do a loop and then get tackled. That just doesn’t make an iota of sense. I’m not Ash. I can look at myself in the mirror all I want, and at the end of the day I will have been a guy who looked at myself real hard in the mirror. I’ll probably conclude that I need to up the mileage on my runs to compensate for the extra beer I’ve been drinking on gameday lately, but none of that will have any bearing on whether or not Ash develops into a winning quarterback.
You win non sequitur of the week.

I don’t know anymore. For what this offense is capable of, I think Case could be a game manager. He didn’t play well the last two series, but I really felt like the play calling was suspect there. He’s not a 3 or 4 year starter, CLEARLY, but until there’s a QB on campus who can legitimately outplay him, he seems like a decent option.

Yeah I have to admit I wonder now if things with GG might have gone differently this year if we had the running game early in the year that we had after putting Cochran and Poehlman in. Still not sure though he was good enough to be the real answer. No question though that for all the shit GG took he always took the high road and acted with class.
Overstreet and Brewer would have to be pretty bad not to be 1st and 2nd string come next year.
This is why I feel so hopeless though. Because I’m now starting to believe that QBs not yet on campus are going to be the ones to lead us back, but they won’t be able to do it either without growing pains and getting a couple years experience. That means we’re still years away from Conference Championships much less National Championships.

Regarding Davis – The WRs in his recruiting class are all a bust including him. If you shit the bed with both the QB and all the WRs in a class then you get the kind of passing game we’re fielding today. It’s sad that a #2 recruiting class in the nation can underwhelm this much.

The Ash bashing on this thread (and last week’s too) is pretty fucking weak. He isn’t playing well, and he may not be the long-term answer, but he’s also a true freshman who got the reins officially at the OSU game. You know, game fucking 6. He got to campus later than most, his receivers are NOT good, nor is the offensive line, and the offensive weapons that matter most have been dinged up. Here’s what I think alot of you dumb shits don’t get….in practice, against the 1st team D (a pretty fn food unit), he looks better than McCoy. Im not saying that based on Asset reports, its the way organized sports generally work. The best guys show out and they get the reps and mins when it counts.

I’m not sure who all you are specifically referring to, but I can tell you I’ve been an Ash apologist for the most part this season, but these last two games are just too much to keep it up. I understand he’s young, so I’m not saying I doubt him now because we lost. It’s because in two games he’s led us to a grand total of 6 points. And these aren’t against Bama/LSU type defenses either. Inexperience alone can’t justify that level of ineptitude.

2 catches would have made a big difference. Grant dives in endzone and davis at the ten. The line blocking is way too high on run and p block. Saw it live. OLine collapses when they are blocking high. They get knocked off balance and hence the hurries stops at the line with 2 yard runs. Ash miscued at least 4 plays I saw along with a mystery invisible man hand off. I think aggies smell blood. They need more irby score type plays.

In the first half it seemed as though every 3rd down the UT offense faced Harsin tried to call a play that took Ash out of the game, like the wild cody. That doesn’t show trust in your QB. Ash’s confidence has to be gone, as well as the Harsin’s confidence in him. I think McCoy should get the start the next 2 games. Lets see what he can do for a whole game. I’m tired of this musical quarterbacks B.S.
I was at the game and have to say there were two turning points in the game. The kick catch interference penalty and Mack kicking the field goal when we’re on the 11. Mack conceded the game at that point, because a fg does us no good. It just gives Mack talking points about how hard this team fought. I don’t think the corner route on 3rd down from the 11 was catchable by Grant, but I hated his effort this game. I think we all know our QB’s aren’t the best but at least get your jersey dirty and dive. He had a similar effort on an Ash pass in the first half.

From a fan’s perspective at the game, I’m going to be the first to say that we have no QB. Neither one could do anything. Throws were off target, poor decision making, no good audibles. (He next person that I hear say Case should start is going to get smacked. He was just as bad as Ash and has ZERO arm strength at all. Our guys can’t seem to lead anyone which is a fatal flaw for a QB. Noticed it during warmups too. Brewer shows some serious talent on tv so please God let him be the real deal.
Our running game seemed very lackluster. Power right way too much. Their weak side was screaming to be run at but was never really challenged. In all honesty, I like Harsin, but another year of these kind of calls and not at least trying to take advantage of a weakness means he should go. Hopefully he gets things together for gaggie…luckily Gray is out now too.
Kudos to the defense…lights out football. Acho has really turned it up and JJ is rollin’ now. Our defense is top notch and I would put them against the best of them the way they are playing after BlowU. Diaz has earned his paycheck in my opinion. If the D picks up next year where this one leaves off…top 3 in the country easily. Diggs and Byndom are salty corners and not to be messed with now. We will miss Kenny V.
Now to the shitty part. This has to be one of the worst officiated games I have seen in a LONG time. The muffed punt interference call was complete bs. The refs didn’t even confer to talk about it. The lack of reviews against ksu amazed me (ie that incomplete pass bc his foot touched out of bounds before he drug his other foot). The PI call on Byndom was the last straw…it was right in front of me and was a clean battle for an uncatchable ball anyway so there is no way in hell that is PI. The non-call 3 delay of games that ksu got away with and the mystery 10seconds they got back…wtf? Really? Are we playing in rec football now? Unbelievable how bad these officials were and I never use that as an excuse. So bad that even I joined in on the booing because I couldn’t stomach it anymore.
Overall, poor poor offensive showing with little glimmer of hope at QB. NO case isn’t the answer at all. Ash took a big step back. The D can play with anyone, period. With Gray out…we have a good shot at aggie if we can get a run game going but who knows because now they see our QBs can’t play for shit.

Here is what I was thinking of during the game (while my hands were over my face in frustration – my 6 year old son kept asking, “Daddy, why do you cover your face?”)
I was thinking, “This is what I expect to read from The Asset this next week”
Early in the week, [insert QB name here] initially had an okay practice. The following day, [insert CQ name here] had a poor practice. But on the third day, [insert QB name here], the light bulb finally seemed to go off in his head.
And then, two redacted plays, were practiced. It should be interesting.
The QB report is almost always the same. And, if we’re behind and their defense doesn’t fear our QBs, what’s the point of having [redacted] plays?

Really glad I slept through last night’s game. It isn’t that hard to find a QB, really. Other schools do it all the time. I guess it’s a combination of system (we are running an offense that differs considerably from the spread every one plays in high school) and the unbelievably awful receivers (seriously, we have no one that ever gets open and little Shipley doesn’t change that — it’s outrageous that we have a receiving corp without a single playmaker in it). On top of that, though, it’s hard to believe we cannot find a QB better than what we have, freshman or not. I thought Ash would show flashes coupled with youthful mistakes. We get the latter, but not the former. McCoy is just too limited.
How is it that we have the worst QB play in the Big 12? That Chuckie Keeton, from Cy-Fair, is a better 2-star freshman QB for Utah State than anyone we have on campus? That we miss on recruiting at the positions that the state of Texas is SUPPOSED to produce talent at (WR, QB)? Defense is fine, but it mostly has been. Granted, we finally found RBs. But what about the rest of the damn offense?

Oh and for all you GG haters, if we had him at qb we win that game by 2 touchdowns and probably win at Mizzou. He is lightyears better than Ash and McCoy.
No doubt. I think we all remember how great Gilbert was against KSU last year.

I like Case’s play SLIGHTLY better than Ash’s right now (Ash has hit the wall and the game just won’t slow down for him without another full offseason of experience), but damn that kid has a noodle arm. Just lacking in God-given physical ability at the QB position in every regard. He needs to start against A&M but after that he’s a career emergency back-up.

Ash will be a lot further along than Brewer come next season – can’t imagine that a true freshman can make up the difference – even if he is physically good to go and has spring ball. Ash has a big headstart – last summer, a full season and bowl practice is a lot of reps.

The best this offense has looked was when we were rotating QB’s. Think UCLA and the 2nd half of BYU. Might as well go back to that. Neither of these guys alone is the answer.

I gave up my season tickets after last year because they’re so overpriced. Went to the last 3 this year and paid $40 to get into each. That tells you how overpriced these tickets are.
I think last night will be my last trip to the worlds largest ad for awhile. They’ve just totally ruined the gameday experience. The loudest the crowd got last night was when the got the wave going. Insofar as our receiving corps, I don’t blame the kids. I blame the coaches, and primarily Bobby Kennedy.
My own example is Ty Montgomery. As a senior at St. Marks in Dallas, he was all about Texas. He wanted to be a Longhorn so bad he could taste it. Bobby Kennedy strung him along thru the Acho brothers, but it was very clear to Montgomery that Darius White was Texas’ choice (at one point I thought that not recruiting Ty might cost Texas a shot at Jackson Jeffcoat, because the two kids’ moms had become such good friends).
Flash forward. Montgomery is starting for Top Ten Stanford and scored on a reverse to open Stanford’s game with Cal tonight. All summer long the Stanford seniors raved about his work ethic and talent. The kid is nails on the football field, and fits every additional and exasperating quality that Mack says he is looking for in a recruit.
Bottom line. We recruited the wrong kids, which should be the mantra for the 2011 Texas Longhorns.

I’m going to second Savage Henry. I think that both of the QBs have trouble with the pressure more than anything. By having both of them get time on the bench between plays and know that they won’t be counted on for everything I think helps with that.

I love UT.. I always will love UT.. but anyone that honestly thinks we are going to take this team into college station and win on thanksgiving night is in complete denial. A&M is the most talented bust of a team in college football this season. They are top ten talent and have emploded in the second half of almost all their games. The only game they werent in was the Oklahoma game.. every other game they should have won.
I hate the aggies and I’m so glad they are going to the SEC!! That place is going to be rockin- the aggies play us like its their superbowl every year and this being the final game against us for who knows how long.. They will be more fired up than any other time this year .. those farmers will be whooping and kissing each other all night long.
If we can keep this game within a touchdown I will be surprised and thats only because of our defense ( which is playing like a top ten defense hands down!!) I hate to sound negative or like I’m trolling or being an aggie, I just hate how completely out of touch with reality some of our fanbase is over at burnt orange nation. The majority of them are saying we will go on the road and beat the aggies and baylor… I just watched baylor last night and we aren’t gonna beat that team either.

Talk about recruiting misses – let’s see what happens with Johnny Manziel. This kid was an absolute gamer in both his Jr. and Sr. seasons playing on probably the 3rd or 4th best 4A team in the state(who unfortunately got paired against Lake Travis in the 2nd round last year). He put up ridiculous numbers for the world to see, and was ours for the taking(grew up a Texas fan). That Oregon wanted him should tell you something. Of course, he wanted to stay close to home so wound up at A&M. Meanwhile we had Ash signed from the start, who has all the “measurables” but compared to Manziel ON THE FIELD, well, there was no comparison. Malcom Brown called him the “best football player he’s ever seen”(Tivy beat Steele who was the 5A champs).
I am still rooting for him to do well – but as a Longhorn I will throw up if he has a stellar carreer for A&M. Anybody who missed this kid simply wasn’t paying attention.

I share the dislike for how the offense is executing as much as anyone, but glad to see the defense playing at a high level once more. Congrats to Irby for scoring a touchdown on senior night. Every time the opposing team punts, I wonder if Texas will be called for making contact with the punter. Similarly, every time Tucker rugby punts I worry it might be blocked. However, Tucker’s ability to provide his own coverage on kickoffs and punts has been a blessing to the special teams unit. While I’m thinking of it, thank you to all the seniors for choosing Texas and may God bless you going forward.

Unfortunately, it is looking like that LSU v. Alabama rematch will occur. I won’t even tune into the game that night if those are the competitors. The first game was bad enough. Just makes me wish for an eight team playoff more. More exciting matchups somewhere along the way, and a lot easier to stomach that mess if they had to go through a gauntlet before a potential rematch.

As the SEC fortifies it position at the top in the national championship race, and the Big 12 fades, would you say that it is due to a talent differential, or would you say that Big 12 coaches are inferior? If injuries are the issue, why is the Big 12 more prone than other conferences?

by RenoHorn on Nov 20, 2011 11:56 AM CST reply actions
Thanks for the JuCo link, Saul. It seems absolutely clear to me that we should go that route, despite never even considering it before.
It takes a certain set of circumstances to require it, and we’ve got them all: A) a bunch of QBs who can’t get the job done; B) need to build a bridge to incoming talent; C) a supporting cast that is not an overall rebuilding lineup but may in fact have every other piece in place for a serious run. This is us in ’12, to a T.
Now, whether there’s a player who fits the bill is another matter. But we owe it to everyone else on the team to look hard for that guy over the next couple of months. Fair chance that he’s out there. The stakes are far too high here to dismiss the notion.

He’s a $5 million dollar cheerleader. If you need someone to stand on the sideline and motivate by clapping his hands, he’s the guy. If you need someone to tell an opponent that just kicked your ass how much he’s rooting for him, he’s the guy. If you need someone to hug an injured opponent kiss him on the cheek and feed him some warm soup while his own team is trying to figure out how to stop floundering, he’s the guy.
If you need someone for innovative Xs and Os or strategic decisions, he’s not the guy. If you need someone to hold his coaches accountable for their decisions in talent evaluation inability to implement schemes (like running the football) or bad playcalling, he’s not the guy. If you need someone to make smart decisions about who to play instead of basing it on seniority, he’s not the guy.

This is a pipe dream. This is first time in Mack’s 14 year career at Texas that he’s even been willing to consider a JUCO for ANY position on the team. There is absolutely no way he will ever consider putting the QB position in the hands of a JUCO.

Let me remind everyone that Harsin’s offense requires a QB with a very specific skillset for his offense to hum. He has stated exactly what he looks for in a QB. Accurate, good decision maker, does not turn the ball over, can stretch the field. Keep in mind that Harsin’s first opportunity to hand select his QB recruits came with Connor Brewer. That being said, it is too soon to give up on Ash. Absolutely, Ash has had poor showings this year and has demonstrated accuracy issues, as well as poor decision making. Ash may pan out, he may not. However, Harsin is trying to make his offense work with QB’s that were Greg Davis recruits. (Ash might actually be pretty good in a zone read style offense. I sometimes wonder if Greg would have gotten us more points on the board running the old VY/Colt offense with Ash. I digress.) If Harsin can develop those required skills into Ash during the bowl practice season and during the offseason, with the addition of Johnathan Gray next year and an improved David Ash, we will be rewarded for our patience this year. All I’m saying is stop banging your heads against the wall, take a step back, a deep breath, and evaluate the process without blowing up over every single loss while the process lays out. Instant gratification just isn’t happening and you never should have expected it.

First Time Poster here – it’s long, but indicative of the Program issues and frustration we all have:
The issues surrounding the Football program have been well documented and debated ad nauseum for the last year. I just read the note from Savage Henry regarding season tickets and earlier post about the stadium being on “lock down”. I agree: the game day experience has been on decline for a long time. I am in the same camp, Savage, and I too believe my own “story” is endemic of the problems that surround the Program.
Yes, Mack Inc. got fat. We have underachieved in the weight room, talent selection, recruiting, blah blah blah…all true. However, the issues run so much deeper. The University and the Athletic Department are fat, arrogant and no matter what they say or do flat out don’t give two-shits about the fan base – that is the fan base that has helped develop Longhorn athletics into a powerful brand. Deloss and Company deserve great credit, but they have also fucked the guy and family that bleeds burnt orange. The little guy that buys tickets, shirts, gear, etc.. the guy that travels great distances with family and chooses to spend discretionary income on all things Horns. They cater to the “stay in the Club room and drink margaritas fans”. Hey, I like a like a cold beverage too, but shit, at least I sit outside and support the team. “Wine and Cheese” could not be any more true today.
From 2003 to 2010, we had season tickets. My kids were 3 and 5 when we started. We traveled 420 miles from our home to Austin 6-7 times per year for games. We attended all RRR each year. We traveled to bowl games, including all three Rose Bowls. We traveled nearly every Spring for the Orange-White game. Each year the ticket prices climbed, the donation levels rose, but I kept pouring my heart, soul and dollars into the program. It was our choice – we loved it, we wouldn’t take it back for anything.
Flash forward to last year.
My seat location – along with my considerable donation level – continued to improve. I couldn’t justify the cost and time for a full season this past year; kids getting older, busier and dollars getting slightly tighter. I figured out that in Longhorn Foundation dues over the years, we gave close to $30k total plus the high cost of season tickets. When I asked if I could lower my dues for a year, but keep my same seats – the Foundation didn’t even respond to my request. They simply released the tickets. They didn’t even say thanks for the business or come back or let’s put you in different seats….fucking nothing. Simply put, they got their ESPN money and said “we don’t need you any longer.” “Take your $10k donation..(yes, $10k in 2010) and your four season tickets, your money spent each weekend at the Co-Op, and we’ll sit on them and keep the prices up. We don’t give a shit about the past, we only want to keep the price level up.”
Flash forward to this season. I’m watching PAC12 games with my kid because we can’t get the Longhorn Network. I bought tickets for the Rice game on stub hub…at over face value…you know who the seller was….Texas Box Office. They were upper level West side, end zone seats..that they sold at $5 over face value per ticket. Guess what.? Some dude shows up in 2nd Q with the same seats! He got free from a “big wig” on UT board or some shit….. They sold me the same tickets they gave out free. The funny part too is that my old season ticket seats remained empty along with several others around them the entire game. I sent a note to Texas Box as a courtesy to just let them know about the snafu on the duplicate tickets they sold me….guess what response I got…NOTHING! I sent the same to Stub Hub; they gave me my fee back and apologized profusely.
That’s it in a nutshell for me. Texas will remain strong, no doubt. I just honestly believe the arrogance and commercial focus will undermine the passion of the fan base over the long term. I mean shit the student section sucks for the most part. The fans are weak in the stands. The gameday experience has been on decline. My kid who is all-things Longhorn, can’t watch some of the games on TV anymore.
The coaching and team play is often a reflection of the uber-commercial, arrogant, and dispassionate University. I sincerely hope we can find it again.

Geez. Talk about a manic-depressive fan base right now. Way up, way down.
On Mack — Mack had UNC this close to undefeated seasons – plural. Look at that train wreck since. Maybe that’s who he was, not who he is, but his ability to wring potential from organizations that others could not (and have not since) got him the Texas job. Maybe he’s become too much an insider at this point to recognize where the opportunities and obstacles are to be found. If so, that’s a common disease in the aftermath of success – people lose their ability to recognize their own crap, and people around them won’t tell them. We immediately recognize the virus in artists (such as musicians and authors), but for some reason we like to pretend that it doesn’t happen in a corporate setting. Bull****. Maybe last season was Mack’s “U2” moment (if you don’t know the reference, google “reapplying for best band in the world”), but only if that recognition started as self-recognition. This is his band. It’s not a new bass player’s or drummer’s job to put Texas back on top.
On LSU-Bama: If both get there (and I think Auburn will pull the upset), then I will definitely watch. I loved the first game. Loved the hitting, loved the decisions Saban had to make about field goals or punts, loved watching the defenses make play after play. Offense may be chocolate, but after nearly a decade in Willy Wonka’s College Football Chocolate factory, vanilla tastes pretty damned good right now. How many more games are we going to see lost because the defense on top-freaking-10 teams cannot make a stop to save their lives? How many receivers are we going to see get loose deep with 30 seconds to go for a game-winning touchdown. It may be entertaining, but we used to call it incompetent football.
Long story short – I consider an LSU-Alabama rematch a plea from the football gods. How else can you explain the last two weeks?

Bohls: He must be the worst practice player in the history of college football because he lights up during games and demonstrates a poise and presence on game day that Ash never seems to convey. Neither has an iota of experience. Ash has had five starts and lost three of them. A thought about the receiving threat next year: Grey is a legitimate pass catcher. Better than Fozzy. I watched him in 7 on 7s at The Opening with Brewer and he looked better than the average receiver at that camp. I think we’ll have a serviceable receiving corps next year with Ship, Davis, Grey, and Goodwin.

Edition,
No problem. I narrowed that list to about seven guys as of last week that I thought looked interesting, but I don’t make those calls.
Savage,
Perhaps I should reword my sentiments in light of your interpretation. I am not saying freshmen can not make a positive contribution. I’m saying just because a given player is deemed a success at School A, it doesn’t necessarily follow that he would make the same impact at School B because the rest of the situation (teammates, coaches, play calls, competition, injuries, etc.) would not be fixed. You can’t know these things absolutely. Just have to evaluate recruits as best you can, coach them, and hope for the best.
I’m not saying there aren’t issues with aspects of the current roster, just that plug and play is too simple a thought process. Obviously, the staff of the past few years hasn’t fared as well in these areas as we would prefer, which is why many are no longer on the payroll. We’re going to have to wait to see how the current staff is able to address the problems to judge their skill level. No overnight fix possible.
G.O.F.,
I don’t believe in football gods, but I’m sure many would enjoy that game. Not my football style preference and I saw enough the first time around.

I don’t understand the endgame for the Brown era. Does he just want to get back to respectability and quit? Wouldn’t it be better for the long-term health of the program to allow the new HC to conduct the rebuilding process?
I wonder if Mack will bail now that it is becoming clear that we aren’t going to have a legit QB who can challenge for CCs much less MNCs until 2013 at the earliest.

Your stats on Ash are wrong…it is 3 TDs and 8 INTs.
Do you realize how bad that is????
If you cannot then maybe you need to watch another sport because that is as bad as I have seen.

I can’t believe Brown is not getting more heat for not going for it on 4th down inside the 10 with 4 minutes to play. It’s not as if we had been moving the ball and worst case is we pin KSU deep.
I have seen considerable improvement from Diaz’s unit this year. Kudos to him. It will be nice to see a full defensive backfield next season to compliment our returning players. Thanks to Robinson, Acho, and Randall for your 4-5 years.
We have no talent on offense except for true frosh. It’s pathetic what happened to this program. Good job recruiting Griffin, Mack. You figured it was too easy with VY. Good job on all the other misses like Luck, Wright, James, Shepard, etc.

That pissed me off. I’m not a yeller while watching games and I was cursing at the TV screen. That move had Mack written all over it, and is why I wish he would step back and let the assistants make the game time decisions. Who knows what Major and Harsin would have decided to do- they may have been on board with that decision – but I’d love to see some aggressiveness in our decision making in such situations.

I’ve slept on it. It’s not Ash or McCoy’s fault that they aren’t capable of playing the qb position. Ash shouldn’t be playing, he should be redshirting this year and sitting and watching the two years after that. McCoy shouldn’t really even be here. We should have two qbs that are redshirt sophomores-seniors at 1st and 2nd string.
It is all on Mack. Sure, Greg had a lot to do with it, but ultimately this is ALL Mack’s fault. It’s not the QBs fault they can’t play. It’s not Harsin’s fault, although his play calling/gameplan the last two weeks has been on the level of Greg Davis bad. It is all Mack’s fault.
The QB, WR and TE evaluation the last 5 years has been so bad that honestly any coach that had anything whatsoever to do with it needs to be removed. That includes Mack and Chambers and Major (I hope Major wasn’t involved). It is time for Mack to hang it up. It never should have gotten this bad.
Vince bought him 5 years. It is up and there is no Vince to overcome Mack this time around. Please don’t let it get worse, retire now and maintain some amount of dignity. The national title makes up for the lack of conference championships and history will remember Mack well. If he hangs on…………………
by Bartoncreek on Nov 20, 2011 2:06 PM CST reply actions
From my view in the stands, McCoy is a difference maker. The team plays different when he is in the game. I swear the defense looked ready to quit after that last Ash series, but when McCoy came in they played well and hard until the end. I don’t know what is going on with this team – Searles was yelling at the O-line after the first series. Ash came out flat and the team was flat. Harsin needs to find out what McCoy can do and do that. Even when they were alternating QBs, they both did better than the “stick with one QB” plan has worked since. And I won’t even say a word about the referees, ball spots, or why they needed police escort off the field….

Mack Brown is the problem with the football team.

If watching the last two games doesn’t open Mack’s mind to a junior college QB, nothing will.
As for game day, the worst thing about it is I am pretty sure we are paying someone to “produce” it. No way so many schools play the same classic rock tracks to “excite” the fans without it being part of a package they bought. I’m alone on this, but to me it speaks to the laziness and entitlement that run through the program. I’m not much for tilting at windmills, so I won’t pretend to believe we can turn back the clock and kill the ads and jock rock (although some schools have never gone down the path in the first place), but if we’re going to be aikir league hockey arena, can we at least get creative? Play something unique, something different from what they’re playing at MAC games? I’d hire that kid who got fired by Alabama for playing “Take the Money and Run” when Cam Newton came to town.

MikeyD,
Please, go find a single post where I have stated that I’m in love with Ash. The most positive thing I’ve said about Ash in this whole thread was “we’ll see if Harsin can develop him with a bowl season of practices and the offseason.” If you tranlsate that to, “Ash is the answer and I’m in love with him,” then the problem is with your comprehension skills.
by burntorangejuice on Nov 20, 2011 2:25 PM CST reply actions
And I won’t even say a word about the referees, ball spots, or why they needed police escort off the field….
This is something we just have to live with this year and maybe beyond. If anyone thinks all the outcries of “evil Texas is driving schools away from the Big12 and killing the conference” isn’t heard by referees as well you’re kidding yourself.
I’m not going to bitch about it because we can’t do anything about it. This is something I was expecting this year and maybe for the next few years depending on what else happens to the conference. The silence from Belmont all these months that everyone has been publicly labelling us as the villains has only reinforced this perspective in the minds of those already inclined to believe it.
What it really comes down to is that we have to play good enough to not leave it in the referees hands. Instead we’ve done just the opposite; played so poorly that we can’t win without the refs calling everything just right.

BartonCreek,
You are right about the redshirt thing. Both Case and Ash would have benefited from redshirting this year. Case could have focused on building up his body and arm strength, improving his pocket awareness and ball security and Ash could have learned the new system and gotten acclimated to college ball and reading defenses. Gilbert and Wood would not have transferred (assuming Gilbert’s surgery was elective). Gilbert and Wood might or might not have been better than Case and Ash but at least Case and Ash would have been better prepared to play QB next year. QBs really benefit from a redshirt year.

You don’t have to have a Andrew luck or Robert Griffin III type of qb….you just cant turn the ball over…The best two teams in college football are LSU and Alabama …two teams that have horrible qbs but their qbs manage the game and don’t turn the ball over…Texas defense isn’t LSU or Alabama good but we have without question the best defense in the BIG 12 if they can get a qb that just manages the game and doesn’t throw interceptions; they wouldve won the last two games. The frustrating part is when you look around college football all the “good” qbs are from the state of Texas and you think UT cant recruit one? Even Iowa state has a redshirt freshman qb better than Texas that should never happen!!! Texas went “all in” on Garret Gilbert and lost…they didn’t even recruit another qb in 09 they should’ve recruited someone to push him…competition makes you better that’s part of the reason Colt was good because Jevan Snead pushed him and made him earn the position…The bottom liine is this with all the high school qb talent in the state of Texas we should always have at least two on our roster…Ash has been horrible and I mean really horrible; but its hard to ask a qb to come straight out of high school and start…Ash should’ve been redshirted and ……was Conner Wood really that bad?

The juco route isn’t a magic bullet for any of Texas’s problems. Vince could have the supporting cast Ash/McCoy have now & not be able to get much done either.
Neither Ash nor McCoy can lead the O on their own. Therefore, I echo those who advocate going back to the 2 QB system Texas had earlier. At least it worked fairly well. Otherwise, it’s plain insane to continue on the same path as these past 2 weeks.
Harsin was my choice as OC, but his play calling since the OU game has been poor. I don’t know why Ash has stopped running. Harsin is trying to force Ash into becoming a type of QB that doesn’t fit his skill set.
At this point in the season, there are no excuses for why the OL & WR corps are as bad as they are.

“Upside is a figment of your own imaginations.” True.
Raw materials:
Andrew Luck: 6’4" 235 lbs.
4.7 40 yard dash
Strong arm
Physical runner
David Ash: 6’3" 222 lbs.
4.6 40 yard dash
Strong arm
Physical runner
As you can see above, from a brick and morter, raw athletic ability standpoint, Andrew Luck and David Ash are very similar. The difference in their abilities, to date, as a quarterback is rooted in the mental aspects of the game. Decision making, accuracy, game management, etc. Based on raw skills and an assumption that there is a possibility (however remote) that with training and experience Ash could improve his mental game to something approaching that of Andrew Luck, then Andrew Luck is a measuring stick of what Ash could develop into based on raw athletic ability alone. That is why I say Andrew Luck is Ash’s upside. Clearly as of now, they are as different as night and day.
Was any of that objectively wrong?

Once again I come in here to see a lot of infighting. I tried to warn everyone not to get too high on our quarterback situation because we had just played Kansas and a very depleted and worn out Tech defense. I warned of the peaks and valleys with these guys.
As much as I know that we do not have the quarterbacks here that can get us where we need to be, we must be supportive of both. Maybe one of them can reach caretaker status. If so, we can win out.
As I said last week, the good news is that the recruits know Brewer is coming. A lot of you do not want a freshman because of what we are experiencing this year. Folks, this guy is a “different breed of cat”. Brewer has the tools that these guys will never get and I think we win right away with him.
We are playing the Aggies this week and they need your support. Do not make this personal because you like one or the other of them.

How ironic is it that we are now 2-6 against KSU since 1998. They are the anti-UT, the little engine that could. They’re lucky to get 3-star recruits, and 4-stars are a pipe dream for them. In terms of D-1 programs, they’re the epitome of rinky-dink, yet they own us.

Please get specific … what sort of training, and what’s the duration of training necessary to achieve adequate results? I’m not trying to argue, but you make it sound so simple. Why aren’t their 20 other Andrew Lucks, rather than a couple? To counter your statement on mental upside, maybe Ash is an example of the Peter Principle and this is the best that we’ll see from him. I hope Harsin makes the right call on which ever of the two best describes Texas Longhorn Ash.
I just wish the guy would stop throwing the ball off his back foot and approach the position with gusto (maybe he is, and I’m missing it).

Ash was recruited to be a backup to GG, McCoy was given an offer as a favor to Colt and no one thought he would take it. More importantly, Harsin had nothing to do with either one. I have issues with Harsin’s playcalling at times this year but honestly, he has had virtually nothing to work with. To truly install what he wants to do, we are looking at 3 years at least of recruiting.

If I knew all of that I’d be QB coach somewhere making a lot of cash. Generally, when people use the term upside they mean the best the player could be given raw abilities and that attaining that level depends upon successful development. Usually one can speak about something as nebulous as upside without being asked to procure a detailed training plan for how it should be achieved.

I agree we can’t give up on Ash this year. He will likely be a stop-gap for Brewer honestly because, and I agree, that Brewer fits the intangibles and measurables that Harsin likes. Watched Brewer play and the kid will be a good one…he is a surgeon on the field. The only thing I think Harsin needs to do is throw in some plays that fit more of Ash’s style…ie the Ash package plus some. It wouldn’t cause regression in the installed system now just because it is only adding to it. However, whether that is possible is for the coaches to decide. Either way, Ash needs something. McCoy just isn’t going to get it done…maybe he has the IQ but he lacks in the measurables/intangibles department. Thoughts?

Unfortunately as some have noted, neither QB seems to be the answer with the team right now. Just try to imagine Harsin’s dilemma in playcalling: Do I risk calling a pass with Ash and getting a turnover; what pass plays can I call that Case won’t sack himself on or underthrow; What can I call that is quick enough that my OL won’t collapse before the play develops…It has to be extremely frustrating for everyone especially when the opposing D knows all this too. You can say K-state didn’t stack the box, but I can bet they were sure leaning in on most plays knowing our teams problems throwing the ball farther than 10 yards.

The one thing I’ve taken from glancing through this entire thread is that UT has been handing out a shitload of doctorates in vag rubbing. You guys are fucking pathetic. Everybody knows Mack slept on the jobs for 3-4 years. Last year was the inevitable result. If Mack was shit-canned at the end of last season he would have earned it. He wasn’t. He’s made significant staff changes. As a fan I have two choices: give the new coaches, systems, and recruiting time to work; or go full retard every time we’re not “Texas good”. This season hasn’t really been all that surprising to anyone that’s had their head out of their ass.
If you expect the best from this team hold yourself to the same standard as fans. Support this young team that hasn’t quit in a game yet, and the coaches that are developing young players and scheming around deficiencies they had nothing to do with. Or you could just keep acting like a bunch of entitled ass clowns. The one thing I despise the most about Mack Brown is his use of the word “swagger”. Words used to define swagger include defiant, insolent, brag, boast, and bluster. I think he’s created that culture more among our fan base than he ever did with any of his teams. And it fucking sucks to be around, and it’s got to suck being a player with fans like you. I’ll let you figure out who you are, I’m sure you’ll prove my point.

I am tempted to go into college football hibernation until the 2013 season. Next season doesn’t promise much. Case will never be a D1 QB. Ash seems to be going the GG route, of too much playing time too soon ruining his confidence and development, which is ironic because it was caused by the failure of GG, which in turn was caused by the lack of a credible back-up (see case McCoy). Basically our QB position has been one big hot mess since Colt left. I don’t want to watch us repeat the same thing for the 3rd year in a row with Brewer. So I think its best I hibernate Until September 2013. Hopefully I’ll come out, have a bit of a stretch, eat some berries and find out that Overstreet lead the ‘horns to an at large BCS bowl as an athletic dual threat sensation, that we are ranked as a pre season top 5, and that the asset has a good QB controversy to report as Brewer has started to justify his 5 star recruiting profile with some special play in practice. The QB position is no longer a decision about who’ll create the least damage, but rather how do we give enough playing time to these two superb young talents, with Ash making a reliable 3rd string.

@Duke and MikeyD,
Here are direct quotes of my comments regarding Ash (prior to Mizzou and KSU, mind you). If you have any abilitiy to comprehend nuance and read all of these comments in context, this should be the final nail.
The first is probably the only comment you read…
On Ash, he reminds of Andrew Luck. To me that is his upside, it’s just a matter getting the mental parts of the game down. Whether he reaches that potential will be told in time.
Here I clarify, pay particular attention to the last sentence…
DKR,
I’m just saying he has similar raw physical talents: strong arm, physical running, similar build. I’m projecting him to reach the same ability level. It’s too soon to tell if he can get there, but if we’re just talking brick and morter building blocks, he’s got a similar makeup.
Again, take shit with a grain of salt.
Even further clarification. Pay particular attention to the second to last sentence…
DKR,
All good, man. I knew when I made that comparison there would be a lot of people thinking I’m crazy. I will not be shocked either way if he is merely average and gets us through tough games or if he ends up being a first rounder. I will enjoy watching it all play out, though.
Last comment of the thread. Making it very clear that I wasn’t predicting anything. Just making a comparison on raw athletic abilities…
I should add, for the record, I didn’t actually make a predicition. I made a loose comparison with the caveat that it is too soon to tell whether it will be validated.
So, you can both fuck right off.

Is it more reasonable to expect to be able to say things like that and not get called out or to expect people to display enough social intelligence to know better than that?”

I agree that personal attacks on college players are unseemly, but it seems to me that when commenting on their play, a whole lot can be said, with multiple adjectives, and still be on the right side of the line. So for those of you who think Ash has been unfairly demeaned, can you explain where the line is? Preferably with examples and comparisons? And before you answer, make sure you’re not one of the people that has KILLED Blake Gideon on this board.

I don’t know if anyone is still reading this but I have a few thoughts from attending the game live:
1). We have, statistically and schematically, the most difficult defense to move the ball against in the conference. But we don’t force turnovers very often and we have only started bringing down the QB in the last few weeks. Better safety play (not including Vaccaro) or stickier fingers from Diggs and Byndom (which I expect to materialize next season) would change that. However, having a dominant defense that is nearly impossible to move has not been an ingredient that could lead to major victories this season or last.
Not criticizing the defense, just pointing at facts.
2). Neither of our QB’s is good. I have no idea what Case is capable of with better receivers and time to throw. I do know that his arm sucks and that when he decides to pull the ball down and run he begins by freezing, setting his legs, and holding the ball out as though he were taunting DL to swat it away.
He seems to find receivers more than Ash and he seems to avoid turnovers but I have little faith of the latter holding up if we had a larger sample size. Ultimately, the only we do well on offense is run the ball. We need our passing game to compliment that and Case struggles to make many of the plays that would do so. Except screen passes, at least he executed some of those.
Does he give us the best chance to win the rest of our games? Possibly. But he’s not very good at all and it’s hard to know if he ever will be.
Ash made one of his best throws rolling out of the pocket and then made one of his worst doing the same. He threw one of his best deep balls on the season and it wasn’t completed.
He’s really struggling with the pressure right now of being asked to make things happen without someone like Shipley to help him carry the water. His ceiling is clearly higher than Case and I struggle to understand why that isn’t apparent to everyone.
Right now he’s not good. His accuracy and timing would come and go throughout the night and you could see his confidence rising and falling on the field. Hopefully we don’t break down and ruin another strong-armed talent. He seems to be made of mentally sterner stuff than Gilbert though so perhaps there is hope for the future.
The 2012 season is exceptionally important for what we do to prepare the QB position to lead the 2013 team. Anyone who says that Ash is absolutely incapable of being the QB for that team doesn’t really deserve any attention.

Also:
KSU has a terrible pass-blocking OL and our man coverage and improved Fire-Zone coverage made Klein hold the ball extra long…
but Okafor has gone from being a very good DE to approaching true greatness and Jeffcoat has made that same leap only from “solid”.
Our DE’s, with the time next year’s secondary can buy them, are going to be an abosolute terror. DT pass rush is likely to improve as well. Should be a lot of fun to watch, and a nightmare to practice against. We may have to sit some starters out just to get work done.

I probably shouldn’t have said that, but I was pushed over the edge. I should have ended the exchange, but like I said, I don’t suffer fools easily. I am generally even keel type of person and only get upset at a certain type of person. I have been known to curse at a driver who will go the very end of the entrance ramp and cut off all the people who were patiently waiting in line, and I now I have cursed at two internet bullies who ganged up and twisted my words to try to make me look like an idiot, which you would have seen if you had bothered to read the entire exchange. There is no way to read the full context without realizing they were either intentionally doing so or didn’t bother to try to understand my position and decided to just come at me, anyway. Granted, I shouldn’t care, but again, it was a demonstration of the type of behavior that infuriates me more than anything else.
I apologize for being crass. From henceforth, I will avoid getting into arguments with people who refuse to listen to reason or comprehend my comments in their full context.

I think you’re absolutely right about Ash’s ceiling being higher, and I don’t think anybody credible disagrees with that. Unfortunately, I also think most are coming around to the idea that as far as the next few games are concerned, McCoy gives them the best chance to win. Why? Turnovers. You rightly point out that our defense while INCREDIBLE does not force many turnovers. So we can’t afford a QB who turns it over with frightening regularity.
If this were the NFL, there would be every advantage to giving Ash all the time in the world to settle himself in, because the worse we played, the better talent we would acquire in the offseason. Unfortunately, in CFB, the exact opposite is true.
Sooner or later, the fact that we’re down is going to start impacting recruiting. Maybe Typsie or Jesus can assuage our fears on that, but at some point, 5-7 isn’t a stumble.

Phil,
Read things contextually and in their entirety. You really think someone who doesn’t allow for the possibility, however remote, that David Ash will improve his play is deserving of credibility? Contrast a fan rooting for the guy with the full realization that he has not demostrated great abilities in the last couple of games out of blind optimism because we don’t have any other proven QB right now with someone who intimates that said person is an idiot for “being in love with him” or other blatant attacks for showing optimism. Which person would you rather sit down and have dinner with?

Unfortunately, comparing upsides between Ash and McCoy is like trying to decide whether it is better getting kicked in the dick or in the throat. Basd purely on presence and way he carries himself I have though Ash had the better upside and was slightly better for the immediate future. The problem I have with Ash is that he really has not shown much of anything good. He is not making half good plays and half bad plays. Sometimes he is average; the rest of the time he is a disaster. I have not seen much of anything to make me believe that he will pull it together.
Now, I understand that the ridiculously low ceilings of the people to whom he is supposed to throw that ball have not helped him at all. And that certainly plays a part, as does the obvious struggle of the OL in pass protection. But when I watch other young QBs I see dumb plays mixed in “duck, duck, duck, GOOSE” style. There just haven’t been enough ducks.

I hope the man never leaves. Texas with a great coach would spell doom for other programs in the area (LSU, ou, A&M). Now that we will have a bigger presence in Texas, the last thing we need is Mack to be replaced so please never let him go.

TexanNick: I’m not too worried about recruiting yet. Our staff is energetic and strong on the recruiting trail. HS football players, strangely enough, seem to understand that what we have on the offensive roster shouldn’t be expected to achieve what some Texas fans expect.
I was ready to jump on board with “case gives us the best chance to win now!” when it looked like he might lead a comeback. Then he got a few more snaps and I remembered that he isn’t really any better.
I agree that Turnover avoidance is key, but I’m not at all confident that McCoy won’t cough it up regularly if we give him the opportunity. He threw some balls that easily could have been picked and his self-sacking habits combined with his lack of ball security and our personnel at OT…have you seen A&M rush the passer this year? They may not pick us off much but they could sack/strip Case all day if we have to throw. They lead the conference in sacks.
Phil: Vince Young wasn’t a very good passer in the Davis system as a redshirt freshman. Everyone remember that Vince Young redshirted? Now, he was still effective because he was a god of war who had things fall right in big moments, but he made big leap as a passer over the following seasons.
Freshman Troy Aikman at OU was a terrible player, although that’s not a great analogy. In the NFL he started out 1-15. When Steve Young came to BYU he couldn’t take a snap without tripping over his own feet.
Barkers and Sooners openly questioned whether Landry Jones or Colt McCoy could ever be the QB’s of championship-caliber teams and both had double-digit turnovers as underclassmen.
So yeah, it’s not hard to think of several guys who started out poorly and became great. People like Nikki dig some deep holes when they say that it should be obvious that Ash doesn’t deserve to be a QB at a major college program.

I’m not going to try to sell you or anybody else on the other memes here: that McCoy is more of a leader, that the others play better around him, etc. I think the evidence for those is iffy at best, and not worthy of discussion.
The one thing McCoy is inarguably better at is protecting the ball. In a run-based offense, that’s a pretty valuable skill.

by phil on Nov 21, 2011 9:42 AM CST reply actions
The case for, uh, case goes like this:
He finds the opportunities when they are there (open receivers).
He’s more consistently accurate.
He doesn’t turn the ball over.
The first point, if it’s true, is the best argument. The 2nd point is fine, except that Case is only accurate on short throws. When he attempts something downfield, especially on the run, it’s anyone’s guess where the ball will end up. The final point is questionable. When you watch Case play you expect turnovers to result from his mechanics and pocket habits. With a larger sample size it’s likely that would occur.
The case for Ash is this: He could be better in the long-term, he can be accurate on throws to all parts of the field, and he’s far more athletic.
We need to find ways to settle him down and help him be more consistent. Injecting more health and more wildcat into the backfield is my only suggestion. I also suspect that Shipley being extremely dependable in getting open past the sticks and bringing down difficult catches had a far greater impact on our offense that we realized.
In big passing situations I don’t think our QBs have any confidence in our receivers without him.

The stats are real, upside isnt. Numbers matter in football.
Except numbers don’t filter out luck or give a whole picture.
The worst pass thrown on Saturday wasn’t either of Ash’s two picks, it was Case’s ball right into the chest of the safety. The numbers didn’t show it, but that was a horrible throw, thrown horribly.

A few points, plus a couple of questions:
To NR’s point on turnovers, I recall two sack-fumbles by McCoy against OU, one of which went for a TD. So, while it’s perfectly fair to point out no INT’s, it’s not really accurate to say he “doesn’t” turn the ball over.
Both QB’s seem to struggle with throwing to where the receiver is headed (and/or being on the same page as the receiver with which way they’ll turn, which I somehow find more distressing this late in the season), and all currently active receivers seem to struggle with adjusting their routes to an imperfectly thrown ball.
Onyegbule is a big kid. I hope he develops.
I know it’s somewhat petty to complain about the officials when you play poorly, but at the same time when you play poorly bad calls really hurt. This was one of the worst called games I’ve ever seen, including some missed calls that benefited us. The idea that it’s OK to shove a microphone and camera into the face of an 18 year-old after a game but paid professionals are somehow above questioning is idiotic and needs to be changed ASAP. Write or call your congressperson; make it a presidential election issue; whatever. These guys should have to stand in front of people at the end of the game and defend the calls they make.
Questions:
It seems like Byndom was benched after the second TD drive. Was he hurt, or was that purely an on-the-field thing?
Ash took a couple of big hits against Mizzou and another couple Saturday night. At one point, he headed off the field looking like he was cradling his right arm. Any whispers that he might be banged up?

by pete on Nov 21, 2011 10:37 AM CST reply actions
Mack is thinking very short term right now, he is wondering who to start vs ags in 3 days. My guess is that he goes back to the situational package approach with Case getting most of the snaps but with Ash playing in likely running downs (and running more). If either guys gets a hot hand, Mack will ride the hot hand.
Mack did the obvious thing last week to restore Ash’s confidence by having Ash mostly throw short and rarely throw long (conventional wisdom, imo) but it didn’t work, Ash still was inaccurate even on short, easy passes. Ash appears to have a confidence problem.
Can Harsin and Mack restore Ash’s confidence in just 3 days? Maybe but not likely. As we know from experimental psychology, psychological stress adversely impacts complex motor skill performance. It is possible to rewire the mind but it isn’t necessarily a super quick process.
Upside or long term potential is most likely a very, very, very small consideration wrt Mack’s decisions for Thursday’s game vs the ags. Whichever QB Mack thinks has the best chance to beat the ags in 3 days is who will start. Ash’s best chance to play a bunch vs the ags is to run effectively on Thursday. That might also be a good way to restore his confidence.
BTW, could a new discussion thread be started? This thread has over 1000 comments.

And rolled him out more, using his mobility to move him away from the pressure, expecially against Mizzou (only one designed rollout I remember). Give him run/pass options on some of those.

Mack said in his presser today that who is playing at QB will be determined by which package the coaches are running. Sounds like the circle is being close and Mack will be returning to a package oriented approach (rather than playing Ash almost the whole game).
Given that the ags are number 1 in the country in sacks and 15th in run D, presumably the horns will continue to emphasize short passing again (as they did vs KSU). For some reason before the KSU game Nickel Rover compared more emphasis on short passing to radically changing the horn offense (something about adopting a West Coast offense, IIRC), rather than just increasing the frequency that short pass plays are called vs inside runs and longer passes. Scipio also seemed to be aghast at emphasizing short passing. The reality is that Mack has no choice, he is going to have to mix up more wide running and short passing with less inside running because the Texas OL is not going to efficiently block the ags’ DL if Texas mostly runs inside and throws lots of intermediate and long passes. Texas will use the short passing game to help set up blocks for interior running and play action passes following pump fakes.
I agree that rolling out Ash to set up spring draws, reverses, very short passes, and runs by Ash is a great use of Ash. Force CBs to decide whether they will pass defend or come up to tackle Ash. Continue to use the TEs such as Grant and Irby split out; have them block the OLB on QB rollouts and then roll for the short pass (like a pick and roll in bball). The advantages of rolling out Ash are that it uses his ability to run, it simplifies real time analysis down to reading just the play side CB, and it gives him a very short pass to throw.

The OL has been catching heat in here for not much reason. When they stack the line like everyone is doing because we cannot pass, it becomes almost impossible to block that kind of numbers. They have also gotten a bad rub on pass protection because of hesitation of our QBs.
Please nobody get mad. Cheer for our team. Let’s beat them Ags!
by MikeyD on Nov 21, 2011 2:11 PM CST reply actions
Kafka, what does the short passing game offer us exactly?
We already have a running game that can attack the line of scrimmage from sideline to sideline, what we need from the passing game is something to stretch the defense vertically.
Anyways, for the short passing game you need a QB who can make quick checks and reads at the LOS, and then deliver the ball with perfect timing to shifty receivers who can create space quickly.
We have one such receiver, Davis, who is healthy plus a cast of tall receivers and tight ends.
It wouldn’t be hard to bottle up our attempt at a quick game and it’s almost a certainty that we would throw picks trying to execute it.
Did you watch the game kafka? Did you see what was happening when we were attempting rudimentary short-game throws? It’s not risk-averse to run that stuff and the execution level necessary to get all the way downfield would be outrageous to expect of a team that isn’t designed to do it and hasn’t practiced it.
Will we use some short passes? Yes. Are we going to base our gameplan around them? Not if we want to win.
by Nickel Rover on Nov 21, 2011 2:13 PM CST reply actions
Good analysis Kafka. If mobile throwing with run/pass option is the goal, Ash probably takes the snap. But if it’s going to be short passes from the pocket, McCoy has shown more ability there. Agree with platooning them to take advantage of divergent skill sets.
by TexanNick on Nov 21, 2011 2:14 PM CST reply actions
I wish it were the case that KSU was “stacking the line” against our offense. They were not. They played the same defenses they’ve played against everyone else in the league and we couldn’t blow their DL off the ball consistently, or break tackles. I don’t believe Brown and Bergeron were totally healthy and they couldn’t get away from, or run through, the back 7.
by Nickel Rover on Nov 21, 2011 2:17 PM CST reply actions
Truly though, they hardly shut down our running game. It wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t atrocious either. We aren’t going to give up our only identity on offense that quickly in favor of the passing plays that cost us the game. That’s utter foolishness.

Nickel,
I think a fair amount of the short passing game Kafka is advocating is based on QB rollouts, some with play action as you advocate, and some with a run/pass option for Ash depending on how the defense is playing it. Another thing i love about rollouts is it gives the QB more time to process what’s happening and to pick out an open reciever. Extra time for decision making can only help when you’re dealing with a Freshman QB.

I would also agree that KSU didn’t really shutdown our running game. I was disappointed though with our self-shutting down of using the running game to attack the edges. I feel like we might have really hit some big plays if we’d kept attacking there.
We did it relatively few times (this seemed the case against Mizzou also) and when we did it was relatively successful. I don’t understand the reluctance to do this more often. I know if you do it too much they may shut it down, but at least force them to do so, because in forcing them it helps open up the middle.

Pissing in the wind.
As long as you’re standing upwind this can be quite effective.

We lost to Eco Cat. Has Mack no shame?

Just get over your lust. Aikman was not terrible as a freshman, but who cares?
yeah, he was. He shit the bed against Kansas in ‘84 when Danny Bradley had the flu. OU’s offensive coordinator (a guy named Mack Brown) didn’t exactly have Aikman ready for prime time. Troy threw at least one pick six that game (maybe two) and knocked OU out of national contention.
The next year, Aikman’s sophomore year, was when he was kicking ass until Jerome Brown broke his ankle in Norman.
Go get your shinebox, numbnuts.

Nobody is listening anymore. You are pissing in the wind.
I thought this would stop the nonsense but obviously not.

Nunna: I remember LS predicted that Flex and Inside Zone would be our primary means of attack in this game, although I don’t remember why that was the case. He was right, but I didn’t understand our use of Flex because Cover-4 brings the safeties down the alley quick and so it seems difficult to beat the defense to the edge when you are racing safeties who are already there.
We never got downhill on that play. On our inside runs, which did see some success, it looked like we just weren’t that explosive. I doubt Bergeron or Brown were at full health. Hopefully the lighter workload and next few days will make a difference for one of them.
LS will chime in eventually and clue us all in as to what happened in the running game. From my seats I couldn’t make out a ton except that we weren’t blowing open holes and that their pursuit was preventing explosives.

Roll outs on playaction are fine, so long as we are still basing around the running game. If we intend to use them a lot my vote is for Ash, his horrifyingly bad 2nd INT notwithstanding, because Case looks like he has to wind up his body like an outfielder throwing home when he’s trying to hit a post on the run.

Pete,

Actually, pete, there are a number of us who continue to read this thread and enjoy the knowledgeable contribution from nunna nickel and a FEW others; we’re just skipping over your jackassery in the process.

I am not Pete but the knowledge is lacking.

Thanks groundhog,
They love to stroke each other. I think they must be Aggies. They love to hear themselves talk.

Nickel,
I admit to not knowing the ins and outs of Cover-4 and and defensive schemes. I was just going based on memory that the few times we did run to attack the edge that we seemed to be effective. I may just not be remembering the failed attempts due to selective memory.
I agree that Ash would be my preference if we do a lot of rollouts, however, if I remember correctly the lone touchdown by Case was actually on a rollout with a run fake.

Pete,
Not sure I understand you’re problem. To be quite blunt I’m not sure what makes you think we care about your opinion of the worth of this post.
We’re having a perfectly civil conversation about aspects of interest and will continue to do so whether you find it worthy or not.

The flex zone, where we pull OL towards the sideline, didn’t seem to be beating KSU to the edge. In the past we’ve struggled with the pin blocks and that’s been why, I don’t know if that was the case against KSU but I know that Cover-4 allows the safeties to attack the edges in the run game pretty easily.
It’s unlikely that LS scrolled down and is reading this thread, but I’m sure he’ll address that in his next post.
We definitely caught them with the sweeps some, which is what you are probably remembering.
by Nickel Rover on Nov 21, 2011 3:56 PM CST reply actions
Cover-4, if anyone is reading this still with any interest, is a zone defense. The deep field is split into 4 zones. The corners are responsible for the sidelines and the safeties split the middle in half. The safeties may line up closer than in Cover-2, or they may not if they want to disguise. The corners usually give large cushions since they may not get help deep down the sideline.
The linebackers are responsible for the flats so it’s pretty easy to flood the underneath zones against the linebackers and throw short all day. That’s what we were trying to do with our slants and hitches.
Against the run, if the no. 2 receiver isn’t threatening downfield the safeties are free to be pretty aggressive and can often stop plays for no gain or even loss if they are fast/aggressive/smart enough. That’s what gave MikeyD the impression of a 9 man front, and credit to him for noticing that.
KSU, playing this coverage, is pretty content to let you complete short passes and rely on good tackling. If you try and run it can be tough sledding trying to pick up big yards because the safeties are well positioned to arrive fast. You can punish them with playaction or short passes to explosive players whom they cannot wrap-up consistently.
Or down the sideline if you have a Blackmon who can run into a cushion and beat the corner for a fade anyways. You can still run on a team like this but your backs have to be able to beat the safeties and you need to be able to block an honest front.

Nickel,
Thanks. Great explanation on the Cover-4.

Nunna, I do think your selective memory kicked in on the outside runs. I think we only managed 1 long run off of it with Goodwin, and I think DJ only picked up 1 or 2 yards on most of his carries.
We ran the ball pretty well considering KSU was playing to stop the run. We averaged 5.15 ypc even inlcuding sacks (why the hell is it so difficult for ESPN to inlcude the sack stats, btw?). I’m not sure rolling the QB out is going to help all that much if Ash can’t make them pay for playing a D oriented to stop the run. One of the QBs has to step up enough to pose some threat within their abilities. McCoy needs to be money on the fast 5-15 yard routes without self sacking, or Ash needs to hit some 20+ yard throws w/o turning it over. I don’t care which one it is. We win the previous 2 if one did that, we lose the next 2 if one doesn’t.
by ut-06 on Nov 21, 2011 4:13 PM CST reply actions
I don’t know why we don’t do that more in general, I guess if the defense stays honest they are less effective.
We are still underutilizing the speed of Goodwin and Monroe, IMO. I know their skillsets make their involvement limited but the fact that in every game we have 2 of the fastest guys on the field hasn’t seemed to help us as much as it should.
by Nickel Rover on Nov 21, 2011 4:14 PM CST reply actions
The coaches knew Ash wouldn’t be the answer this year. They wanted Gilbert to be able to manage the game while getting Ash in on a few packages each week to give him a taste. Too bad that didn’t work out. I think he has a shot at being a much better QB next year, that’s our best option at this point.
by Calihorn on Nov 21, 2011 4:33 PM CST reply actions
As long as people maintain reasonable expectations of an 18 year old QB (even Colt was a redshirt Freshman), the things should remain in perspective. Given that, Ash played up to the hype that surrounded his recruiting. Which wasn’t much… he’s an 18 year old 3 star against a Bill Snyder defense.
