Alex Okafor: All-American
UT Junior defensive end Alex Okafor has been named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America team.
Okafor is the first Longhorn named to the team since the trio of Colt McCoy, Chris Hall and Earl Thomas back in 2009. Okafor had a team-high 7 sacks this season along with 17 quarterback pressures - also a team-high - two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Alex Okafor was named to the All-Big 12 freshman team by Sporting News in 2009. He has 103 tackles (49 solo), 9.5 sacks, 20 TFL, 36 pressures, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 38 games.
Okafor has been as successful at UT off the field as on it. The Pflugerville HS graduate is a two-time academic all-district selection and a two-time member of UT's Athletics Director's Honor Roll.

Congratulations – this Alex Okafor for the last 2 months is the guy we have been waiting for for 2.33 seasons;
Now as he surveys his kingdom, we realize that he is finally there, sitting on his throne as the Prince of Bel-Air.

^ edit – to add to this, got to think that the ill-fated Okafor-to-DT experiment last year sort of waylaid his progress a bit.

Good for him. If he sticks around for one more year, he could work his way into the 1st round next year.
Why in the hell did Muschamp move him inside? That, his love affair with Dr. Johnson, seeming contentment with his safeties and insistance on taking Hawk prey at LB were four things that waived the red flag for me on Will. I’m glad he’s at Florida because if he couldn’t see that Okafor was a prototype NFL DE, then I don’t really want him evaluating future prospects. Not that Mack or anyone other than Major could, but hopefully these new guys do a much better job. Of course, a Monkey strung out on meth and flinging feces at photos of rivals top 100 in Texas would hit a higher rate than we did in 2007-2009.

Bartoncreek,
Muschamp moved Okafor inside out of necessity. An undersized Okafor was better than the other non-Randall DTs on campus. During the 2010 summer, Derek Johnson, who may or may not have been a better option, left the program. Other than him, there was Howell and Kriegel, and the three freshmen, Bible, Dorsey, and Cotton. Howell had concussion issues and the freshmen lacked the strength and endurance to log decent snaps.

I expect a rap from P-Ville’s finest (Derka) celebrating this occasion.

Congrats to Okafor. Dude is a beast. He and Jeffcoat could make up the best DE duo in the country next year.
Okafor is the first Longhorn named to the team since the trio of Colt McCoy, Chris Hall and Earl Thomas back in 2009.
You misspelled “Jordan Shipley”.
In all seriousness, maybe my memories of Hall have just been unduly influenced by the B12 CCG debacle, but it seems weird to see his name up there.

BigDukesix – Quick, name 3 current college football centers without googling.
Yeah.
That’s how Chris Hall ended up there.

Okafor was moved because we needed a Maurice Gordon level effort from him due to a lack of quality bodies at DT, and because we had had success doing the same with Lamarr Houston.
It ended up being a failed reach, but Muschamp had earned that latitude by 2010.
Congrats to Alex.

Muschamp had no choice. We had no one except Randall at DT who was even serviceable.
I’m just glad we were able to move him back out to his natural position this year.
Congrats to Alex O.

Congrats to Alex Okafor. Maybe Craig James will learn how to pronounce his name.

From the beginning our staff expected Okafor to reach 280 pound, NFL DE size. Muschamp didn’t really have a choice, as others have noted, and if he had grown that large it would have worked better.
He really wasn’t bad though as a DT. I was worried about his move back to DE and whether his pass-rush would be good enough. It’s been awesome. Healthy Jeffcoat next year and better 2-deep is going to yield some big results for Okafor in the stat department. Teams didn’t like to run his way this year, next year teams aren’t going to like to run at all.

“Teams didn’t like to run his way this year, next year teams aren’t going to like to run at all.”
We nearly went entire seasons where teams didn’t bother with trying us up the middle. It was futile, and stringing something out to the sideline was no bargain either. It will be that way again If the young DT’s grow into their roles more along side of the JUCO kid, and Edmond is freed to wreck shop. All we need is to have safeties who are capable alley players (if Vaccaro leaves).
