I suppose some — not all — of Mangino’s coaching attire can be recycled.

I took the under on the Mangino Fat joke vein response thing. The line was set at 2.

Well this is….well…hilarious.
Not a bad hire on their part, but I look forward to the Horns kicking his ass. I never liked that man.

as silly as Facebook can be, there is a need for a like button.
edsp…….like.
by Trav Jam on Dec 8, 2011 4:48 PM CST reply actions
Fucking hilarious.
Really odd hire. The man does not particularly enjoy recruiting, so I don’t know how Larry Town gets rebuilt.
by ColoradoAg on Dec 8, 2011 4:52 PM CST reply actions
Fat jokes already taken… well, the guy sure likes replacing black coaches!
Did you bet on that one, SR?
by Canuck Horn on Dec 8, 2011 4:55 PM CST reply actions
Apparently Muschamp didn’t even know Weis was interviewing for the gig. I’d love to see his expression when he got the news. I imagine a stiff upper lip coupled with a sarcastic wanking motion.

So, will Coach Boom go after Applewhite as his replacement?
by Bobbydon on Dec 8, 2011 4:58 PM CST reply actions
ColoradoAg will have to launch a supplementary Weekly Eating Guide next season.
by Vasherized on Dec 8, 2011 5:07 PM CST reply actions
Damn. How will Florida’s offense survive the Gator Bowl without him?
by Arriviste on Dec 8, 2011 5:08 PM CST reply actions
Done, Vash.
First Hors d’oeuvre? Crisco basted cheese curds.
by ColoradoAg on Dec 8, 2011 5:08 PM CST reply actions
And like the Viewing guide, it will mysteriously end in week 9.
by Vasherized on Dec 8, 2011 5:10 PM CST reply actions
And apparently he will not be able to recruit yet because he will need hip replacement surgery.
I mean, wow. What a catch.
by Newy25 on Dec 8, 2011 5:10 PM CST reply actions
Black Sheep Lodge has some ridiculously good Wisconsin fried cheese curds.

Weiss doesn’t give a shit about defense. Great fit.
by Texastough on Dec 8, 2011 5:14 PM CST reply actions
Ok, now I’m upset about leaving the Big 12.
by Phenomenal Smith on Dec 8, 2011 5:20 PM CST reply actions
better than losing him unexpectedly to heart attack during the season. Hope Muschamp doesn’t poach applewhite.
by Nickel Rover on Dec 8, 2011 5:30 PM CST reply actions
Did they beat aggy to the punch in hiring him? He’d fit in well with A$M…hehehe
by Spaceghost on Dec 8, 2011 5:43 PM CST reply actions
I don’t think Weis fits in well anywhere.
HEY IT’S ANOTHER FAT JOKE!
by CrazyJoeDavola on Dec 8, 2011 6:01 PM CST reply actions
Weis is just big boned. That’s the best I could do.
by Felonious Monk on Dec 8, 2011 6:07 PM CST reply actions
I hope the Jawhawks enjoy their decided schematic advantage.

So I guess Agholor’s up for grabs again. I guess he’s a take over Brooks or Coleman, right?
by Dagga Roosta on Dec 8, 2011 6:30 PM CST reply actions
Guess his Rascal didn’t run as well in the Florida humidity.
by Rex Interneti on Dec 8, 2011 6:32 PM CST reply actions
What a weird hire. Nothing in Charlie Weis’ history shows him as even slightly interested in building a program, especially the defensive side.
Even on the offensive side, he hasn’t shown any real ability to teach college players to run his offense.
On a list of coaches ill-equipped to rebuild a burned out husk of a program, Charlie Weis would have to be at the top, right?
by Puedlfor on Dec 8, 2011 6:46 PM CST reply actions
good lord. what is it with big 12 coaches? have we had some characters or what?
by yeh on Dec 8, 2011 6:55 PM CST reply actions
Its really Mangino in a charlie suit. Scooby doo where are you?
by Longonhorns on Dec 8, 2011 7:12 PM CST reply actions
I don’t think Applewhite’s a serious flight risk. It may be that Muschamp wants him, but Boom isn’t Saban and can’t just call his shot without school approval. In terms of on-the-field results, Major hasn’t coordinated a good offense since Rice. He’s not going to be high on the UF BoR’s wish list.
by Dagga Roosta on Dec 8, 2011 7:57 PM CST reply actions
I also don’t think Major leaves at this point. His Longhorn roots are too deep, and he has to know he’s in line to take over solo OC when Harsin leaves, and HC after that.
by Texastough on Dec 8, 2011 8:00 PM CST reply actions
My first thought was they were hoping for a new Mangino. But I think Weis wanted out. He can’t think the future is much brighter on his side of the ball next year, and he knows the expectations will be high. Why not go to a place that almost went winless? They would love UF’s season. Mediocrity never tasted so good. And there’s so much to be had we could stuff ourselves.
FAT JOKES! Continue.
by uttuck on Dec 8, 2011 8:10 PM CST reply actions
It’s a good hire in that it will bring attention to the Big 12—even if it to witness a train wreck. Has this guy stayed anywhere for more than two seasons?
by kemit on Dec 8, 2011 8:24 PM CST reply actions
Applewhite stays
Peterson takes over as head coach January 10th 2013
Harsin goes to Boise State as the head coach replacement to Peterson
Applewhite is named OC/asst. Head coach
Applewhite named head coach 2018.
Aggies beg to come back to Big XII after going 5to and 31the the last three years.
Hook’Em boys!
by jet on Dec 8, 2011 8:25 PM CST reply actions
I’m not so sure. Applewhite has not been on anyone’s short list for OC or HC since he coached Bama in a loss to UAB or somesuch minor minion of college football. It appears he is co-OC for pay purposes only. Mack Brown never mentions anyone but Harsin when talking about who runs the O.

Hey what about the Dayne Crist to Texas rumors? We sure could use a QB.
by Major Cult on Dec 8, 2011 8:43 PM CST reply actions
This departure has Muschamp written all over it. It isn’t the first departure and likely won’t be the last.
by Anonindc on Dec 8, 2011 8:45 PM CST reply actions
I would agree about going after Agholor, but with everyone feeling bullish on getting DGB, do we need Agholor? Were we going to play Agholor as a DB? If we got DGB on offense and Agholor on defense, that would be just silly… in a good way. An amazing, erection inducing way.

Fat jokes are easy and lazy. I expect, and almost always get, more from the commenters here. Glad to see the thread took a more substantive turn.
That being said, how can be people be shocked at this hire? End results at ND and UF notwithstanding, the guy has a serious coaching pedigree and will have the ear of those recruits that KU ever had a chance at in the first place. Did people think that KU was going to talk Urban Meyer away from OSU?
by Longhornmarc on Dec 8, 2011 9:30 PM CST reply actions
I’m not overwhelmed by the Weiss hire, but I am kinda whelmed. He’s definitely a step up from what they had, and at least now they’ve got somebody in place who can polish off all those Twinkies Mangino left laying around when he got the can.
Seriously, Weiss has the talent to give KU a good, or better offense. He’s gonna have to hire a solid defensive coordinator if Kansas is gonna be any good on that side of the ball, and Weiss, who doesn’t seem to care much for recruiting, needs to bring in some assistants with solid recruiting credentials if they’re gonna restock the talent. That being said, Mangino showed that you can win in Lawrence, and Weiss might prosper someplace where the spotlight isn’t nearly as bright as it is in South Bend or Gainesville. He’s one coach who might not mind running the football team at a basketball first school.
Props to KU’s new AD too for running a coaching search and keeping a lid on his main candidates. The Weiss hiring came out of left field, and maybe that’s the way it should have been for Kansas this time around. I’m not a big Weiss fan, but I’d kinda like to see him have some success with KU.
by coolhorn on Dec 8, 2011 9:51 PM CST reply actions
Hey college football retards, it is spelled “Weis”.
He likes to recruit a blue chip. He hates going for those nice things like depth and defense.
Why is everyone clasping to Major so hard?
by ColoradoAg on Dec 8, 2011 10:29 PM CST reply actions
So they hired a fat prick, fired said fat prick, replaced him with a nice guy whom they also promptly fired, and now they’ve hired yet another fat prick. Did I get that right?
by NateHeupel on Dec 8, 2011 10:30 PM CST reply actions
The 24/7 guys seem pretty sure that Major won’t be the one replacing Weiss at UF.
by Sports Fanatic1 on Dec 8, 2011 10:32 PM CST reply actions
I thought his “schematic advantage” in recruiting was flashing his Super Bowl rings. That’s enough to make high school kids’ knees weak and follow him to Lawrence……..right?
by Thor's Brother on Dec 8, 2011 10:41 PM CST reply actions
At least they don’t have to make any renovations to the facilities in the coach’s office/dress area for a ‘ahem’ large coach… Already done! So they saved some money there…
by Zeithorn on Dec 8, 2011 10:48 PM CST reply actions
Kansas AD says the Weis hire “puts (KU) back on the map” and he’s right. Visible from space, even.
ColoAg – Because MAJOR WAS BETTER THAN SIMMS DAMMIT. That, and we’ve been cheering him on for damn near 15 years now. Personally I’m sold on him more as a sharp recruiter than as a coordinator. But he’s certainly a good recruiter. So losing him would suck even if you disregard the fanboy attachment.
by Dagga Roosta on Dec 8, 2011 11:06 PM CST reply actions
man…how AWESOME would it be if Mangina came back as the OC!?!?!?!?!
all I can think about is that one picture of the two fat guys riding motorcycles!

Major isn’t going to Flowrida. He’s next Non-Co-OC in Austin, when Petersen comes and Harsin goes back to Boise… and Mack is in charge of making the LHN fly, dammit, fly.

Muschamp is going to hire a former NFL player for OC
by TDiddle on Dec 9, 2011 2:02 AM CST reply actions
Will is off to a rough start in the swamp. Hiring an OC from one of the worst offensive teams in the country would get his head chomped off.

Muschamp never thought highly of Major’s coordinating ability at Texas. He certainly doesn’t want him at Florida.
by Bellmont University on Dec 9, 2011 9:41 AM CST reply actions
I actually think Weis is a solid hire. Kansas can’t pull a top hire, so they went with proven guy with next level experience. He got a bad rap at ND.
by bob sturm on Dec 9, 2011 9:45 AM CST reply actions
I think Kansas is the first good situation Charlie’s found himself in since he entered the college coaching carousel. Notre Dame wasn’t prepared to win with anyone, and the Gators were more than a one-year turnaround after Tebow’s and Urban’s exit. But after Mangino and Turner, Lawrence faithful won’t have much timetable for success. Beat Iowa State, West Virginia, and a couple non-conference gimme’s, and Weis should be all right.
by bob sturm on Dec 9, 2011 9:51 AM CST reply actions
Isn’t the #1 perk of the KU job the guarantee that you can wipe yourself with freshly laundered hand towels?
by Jigglebilly on Dec 9, 2011 10:49 AM CST reply actions
No, Jigglebilly, I don’t think that is a perk anywhere. Not sure what you even meant by that.
by bob sturm on Dec 9, 2011 11:12 AM CST reply actions
Turner Gill disagrees that KU doesn’t have much of a timetable for sucecss.
by Big Ern on Dec 9, 2011 11:19 AM CST reply actions
Ask Mangino what I meant by that sir, allegedly that was his cleaning method of choice.
by Jigglebilly on Dec 9, 2011 11:44 AM CST reply actions
Big Ern…Turner Gill was horrible. Weis will be better than that at his worst.
Jiggle…oh. Ok then.
by bob sturm on Dec 9, 2011 11:53 AM CST reply actions
Actually, according to their 5’ 9" ex-quarterback, fatty was proportioned in such a way so as to preclude him wiping with anything; thus the shower attached to his office.
by Phil Stroud on Dec 9, 2011 4:23 PM CST reply actions
Actually, I’m more surprised Weis took the job than of anything else. He’s a name, which is worth something to KU. Can he do the job? Probably better than Turner Gill and worse than Mangino, with asshole levels landing right in between the two. In other words, he might be there a long time.
by Toadvine on Dec 10, 2011 7:55 AM CST reply actions
This was a great financial decision by Mr. Weis to bolster his nest egg with millions.
I am skeptical the Jayhawks will field a defense, but their offense should at least rise to above average again. I don’t know who that little fast guy was that barely played against Texas, but I thought he showed promise.
by Saul on Dec 10, 2011 8:22 AM CST reply actions
Making fun of people’s appearance is childish. I got over that in junior high.
Weis might actually do well at Kansas, in spite of how he looks.
