My Two Cents on the Coaching Hire

For a long time I wasn't a fan of all the Nick Saban to Texas talk simply because I knew while some substantial evidence might come out pointing to the fact that St. Nick could be on his way, only if Belmont has been good this year, nothing real would happen until the end of the year. Mack and Saban would deny everything and to act like it's ridiculous to even think that situation would happen. However as time went on I eventually gave into some of the hype and started reading more on the topic. I even formed my perfect world Texas coaching staff one day, college classes can be so boring sometimes.

I say all of this to get to my point that in this coaching hire situation we're in I think the answer as to who Texas should hire is almost too obvious. If Saban is there for the taking with the exception of a few instances I don't see why Texas wouldn't hire him. I read another fanpost on a Texas site not to long ago where a fan made the argument that Texas shouldn't go for someone as old as Saban or Briles ( This was before his contract extension). This fan felt Texas should hire some up and coming young gun who will be with the program for a longer time, theoretically. I disagree with that because while that works, at times, I feel Texas could pass on a great hire looking too far down the road. If the next Kevin Sumlin is out there fantastic but don't pass up on a fastball down the middle looking for a "better" pitch. Saban has a proven track record of success in college and will bring to Austin a pedigree and appeal that few can match which should pay instant dividends in areas that Texas is struggling in like recruiting.

Understandably Nick is older and he has a tendency to show no loyalty to his teams but I look at the state of the Texas football program, from where I see it, and things look like they could get rough depending on how this whole coaching situation turns out. The longer Texas sits in mediocrity and the longer there are questions about who will be head coach in Austin the next season, the more difficult it will be for the longhorns to keep up with teams like A&M and Baylor on the recruiting trails. This isn't the Texas of the earlier to mid 2000s. As a team it's starting to lose some appeal. That's not to say Texas is in dire straits or that they can't recruit anymore. What has become very apparent though is that there are other schools out there who can pluck up talented kids just like Texas and in some cases this school are even better at it. Shocking I know right? Obviously Nick Saban has much more to offer than his recruiting prowess but I would be doing him an injustice if I tried to break down his Xs and Os aspect, so I'll leave that to others on this site who can do it better.

The way I see it is simple, and maybe a little extreme. With the way the program is headed Texas had better have the next sumlin or someone like Gary Patterson who doesn't have to land top notch kids to have success if they don't get Nick Saban. Assuming that there is some legitimate substance behind all this Saban in Austin talk and I haven't gotten my hopes up for more disappointment.

Be excellent to each other.
