Abilene (TX) Cooper WR Lorenzo Joe - Wescott Eberts (SB Nation)
A rundown of Texas' offensive commitments, offers & targets.
Both of the Texas Longhorns' February Junior Days have come and gone. The Longhorns currently have 8 commitments in the 2014 class, with 6 of those coming on the offensive side of the ball. Below, check out the commitments on board, which prospects have offers, and who might have Texas as a favorite.
Prospects' measurables are per 247 Sports. Star rating and national ranking are per 247 Composite.
QUARTERBACK (Needs: 1-2)
Jerrod Heard (Denton Guyer | 6' 2.5" | 190 lbs | 4*, Top 100)
Outstanding Offers (0)
Other Potential Targets (3)
Patrick Mahomes (Whitehouse | 6' 3" | 180 lbs | 4*, Top 450)
Foster Sawyer (Fort Worth All Saints | 6' 5" | 215 lbs | 3*)
Cody Ennis (San Antonio Madison | 6' 4" | 210 lbs | 3*)
The Longhorns landed their "quarterback of the future" when Denton Guyer's Jerrod Heard committed last fall. His commitment remains solid to Texas, though he continues to hear from Texas A&M, Baylor, and others. The coaching staff is reportedly looking into taking two quarterbacks in the '14 class. A few Texans are on the radar, but the Longhorns have yet to receive a visit from a QB other than Heard, nor has Texas offered another signal caller.
RUNNING BACK (Needs: 2-3)
Donald Catalon (Houston Eisenhower | 5' 11" | 190 lbs | 4*, Top 150)
Daniel Gresham (Fort Worth All Saints | 5' 11" | 225 lbs | 4*, Top 250)
Outstanding Offers (2)
Leonard Fournette (New Orleans (LA) St. Augustine | 6' 0" | 215 lbs | 5*, Top 10)
Nathan Starks (Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman | 5' 11" | 200 lbs | 5*, Top 25)
Other Potential Targets (3)
Javon Arnett (Waco La Vega | 5' 9" | 166 lbs | 4*, Top 250)
Samaje Perine (Plugerville Hendrickson | 5' 10" | 203 lbs | 3*)
D'Onta Foreman (Texas City | 6' 0" | 207 lbs | 3*)
The Longhorns have 2 commitments at running back but are said to favor taking 3 backs in the class. Of the backs committed, Eisenhower's Donald Catalon is considered the everydown back, while All Saints' Daniel Gresham profiles as more of a power back or fullback. There were rumors that Gresham was looking at taking visits to other schools, but he appears to have squashed those rumors after choosing to fly down on his own dime to attend JD2.
On the uncommitted backs, the Longhorns have two national longshot offers out to Louisianan Leonard Fournette and Nevada's Nathan Starks. Fournette is considered a heavy LSU lean, and Texas missed a chance to host him at JD2 as Fournette had a track meet last weekend. Starks, an even longer shot, has Oklahoma atop his list. The Longhorns did host Texas City RB D'Onta Foreman, the brother of recent offer Armanti Foreman, at JD2. However, Texas does not seem to be actively recruiting any in-state RBs at this time.
WIDE RECEIVER (Needs: 2-4)
Lorenzo Joe (Abilene Cooper | 6' 2" | 180 lbs | 4*, Top 200)
Rodrick Bernard (Houston Sharpstown | 5' 9" | 175 lbs | NR)
Outstanding Offers (4)
K.D. Cannon (Mount Pleasant | 6' 0" | 158 lbs | 4*, Top 50)
Speedy Noil (New Orleans (LA) Edna Karr | 5' 10" | 175 lbs | 4*, Top 100)
Demarre Kitt (Tyrone (GA) Sandy Creek | 6' 1" | 182 lbs | 4*, Top 150)
Armanti Foreman (Texas City | 5' 11" | 176 lbs | 4*, Top 250 | Committed to Oklahoma)
Other Potential Targets (11)
Mark Andrews (Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain | 6' 6" | 225 lbs | 4*, Top 100)
Trey Quinn (Lake Charles (LA) Barbe | 6' 1" | 192 lbs | 4*, Top 100)
Keenan Brown (Houston Alief Taylor | 6' 3" | 200 lbs | 4*, Top 250)
Derrick Neal (Dallas Lincoln | 5' 10.5" | 170 lbs | 4*, Top 350)
Dorian Leonard (Longview | 6' 4" | 200 lbs | 4*, Top 450)
Jamal Jeffery (Lufkin | 5' 11" | 168 lbs | 4*, Top 500 | Committed to Texas A&M)
Willie Ivery (Sulphur Springs | 5' 8.5" | 180 lbs | 3*)
Emmanuel Porter (Dallas Lincoln | 6' 5" | 190 lbs | 3* | Committed to TCU)
Fonzale Davis (Dallas South Oak Cliff | 5' 11" | 175 lbs | 3*)
Marcus Perkins (Garland Naaman Forest | 5' 9" | 165 lbs | 3*)
Michael Coley (Irving | 6' 2" | 185 lbs | NR)
Texas has 2 receiver prospects committed with a target of 3. The pair of commitments is Cooper's Lorenzo Joe and slot receiver Rodrick Bernard from Sharpstown. Joe has taken the role of "bell cow" in the class, attending both Junior Days to drum up interest amongst the uncommitted recruits. Bernard was a surprise take at the time, but the lightly regarded recruit is one of the fastest 2014 prospects in Texas.
Top 100 receivers K.D. Cannon from Mt. Pleasant and Speedy Noil from New Orleans will likely have committable offers until Signing Day. Cannon is widely considered the top prospect in-state, but has drawn heavy interest from Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, and others. Noil, like so many Louisianans, is an LSU lean. Texas was able to bring Cannon in for JD2, but Noil did not attend. At JD2, Texas offered a third WR prospect, Oklahoma commit Armanti Foreman from Texas City. To round out the quartet of offers, Georgian Demarre Kitt has a reported offer, though it's probably not a "committable" offer until he visits Austin.
Cannon and Noil will likely wait until closer to Signing Day before deciding, but if the staff can flip Foreman, Texas could shut down recruiting at WR. If Foreman remains likely to sign with Oklahoma, look for the Longhorns to target some late bloomers going into their senior seasons.
TIGHT END (Needs: 0-2)
Outstanding Offers (1)
Anthony Jones (New Orleans (LA) Edna Karr | 6' 5" | 215 lbs | N/A)
Other Potential Targets (3)
Koda Martin (Manvel | 6' 6.5" | 245 lbs | 4*, Top 300)
Mavin Saunders (Houston Kinkaid | 6' 6" | 220 lbs | 4*, Top 350)
Dmitri Flowers (San Antonio Churchill | 6' 2" | 215 lbs | 3*)
The Longhorns have a thin depth chart at TE, though it remains unclear how much the Texas offense will involve the position under new playcaller Major Applewhite. Texas has yet to bring in a true TE for the 2014 class. Of the potential targets listed, jumbo athlete Koda Martin is the most highly regarded, though it's not definitive that he stays at TE in college. [UPDATE] Per InsideTexas' Eric Nahlin, Anthony Jones visited Austin for JD2 with teammate DE Gerald Willis and came away with an offer.
OFFENSIVE LINE (Needs: 3-4)
Demetrius Knox (Fort Worth All Saints | 6' 5" | 300 lbs | 4*, Top 75)
Outstanding Offers (5)
Cameron Robinson (West Monroe (LA) | 6' 6" | 330 lbs | 5*, Top 10)
Braden Smith (Olathe (KS) South | 6' 6" | 282 lbs | 5*, Top 10)
Orlando Brown, Jr. (Suwanee (GA) Peachtree Ridge | 6' 7.5" | 345 lbs | 4*, Top 350)
Terrell Cuney (Jasper | 6' 3.5" | 258 lbs | 4*, Top 400)
Joseph Paul (New Orleans (LA) St. Augustine | 6' 4" | 335 lbs | 3*)
Other Potential Targets (5)
Josh Pelzel (Rockdale | 6' 6" | 280 lbs | 4*, Top 250)
Jovan Pruitt (Dallas Bishop Dunne | 6' 6" | 290 lbs | 3*)
Ty Barrett (Dallas Skyline | 6' 4.5" | 305 lbs | 3*)
Connor Mayes (Van Alstyne | 6' 5" | 320 lbs | 3*)
Jacob Bragg (Nacogdoches | 6' 3" | 290 lbs | N/A)
After a banner 2013 OL class, the 2014 class is off to a nice start with All Saints OL Demetrius Knox, a national top 100 prospect, committed. Like his HS teammate Daniel Gresham, Knox has been rumored to be looking around despite his commitment to Texas. For now, he's 100% committed to becoming a Horn. Knox is currently considered a swing candidate between tackle and guard.
3 national offers are low odds flyers at this point. Louisianan Cameron Robinson and Georgian Orlando Brown, both tackles, will likely stay in SEC country. Mauler guard and Kansas native Braden Smith, a 5* recruit, has top schools like Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Nebraska on the trail.
At JD2, the Longhorns hosted Jasper's Terrell Cuney, a center, and New Orleans native Joseph Paul, a guard. Both Cuney and Paul left with committable offers, and both have the Longhorns high on their lists. Cuney, in particular, may pull the trigger in favor of the good guys sooner rather than later.
Of the potential targets, keep an eye out for Bishop Dunne's Jovan Pruitt. The understanding was that Pruitt probably would have come away with a Texas offer had he attended JD2. Instead, the high-ceiling tackle chose to take in his school's girl's basketball playoff game, but could visit soon.
KICKER (Needs: 0-1)
Outstanding Offers (0)
Other Potential Targets (0)
Texas is not currently recruiting a kicker in the 2014 class.
