I was lucky enough to attend his final game in Austin. He clearly had checked out in his mind.

My friend is a charter pilot out in Lubbock and flies Knight and the team a lot. Over the past few years, he’s got to know Knight pretty well (first name basis well). When Knight goes hunting or fishing, he always takes my friend out with them to eat and buys all his meals. This guy used to hate flying Knight when he first started because it made him nervous and he’s also heard some of the best post game ass chewings on planes that have never been aired. However, all he can say about the guy now is that he’s one of the coolest and funniest dudes he’s ever met. The guy can remember batting averages and home run numbers of every player he followed in baseball for any specific year. Knight tells him stories about hanging out with Joe DiMaggio and Roger Maris in NYC back in the 70s. Knight said and I quote, “DiMaggio was one of the sorriest son of a bitches to ever be born. He drank straight vodka at every meal I went to with him. But I’ll tell you what, he was one of the top 5 pussy chasers to ever walk the planet.”

I would not say it’s the defining factor, but Knight’s hiring at Tech is certainly one of the largest contributing factors to the increase in enrollment TTU experienced 2001-2005.
I was at the IU vs Tech game that opened the United Spirit Arena, the Hiring press conference and numerous games. I saw him twice in public and thought I was gonna piss myself in intimidation. I was an RA for a lot of the basketball players, and of the one’s who quit or left early, they were either pussies, wiggers or simply couldn’t cut it. Knight’s a bad ass and I wish Lubbock could have been a better basketball town. It’s too bad Pat Knight is a pussy.
Best Knight memory: The WCW was in Lubbock, and 2 minutes after tipoff, the NASTY BOYS walk in and sit right behind Coach Knight. Nothing happened, but just the idea, the sight is a friggin’ T-shirt.

Not dismissing the legitimacy factor of Knight’s hiring, but the best thing that happened to Tech was UT tightening admission standards. I’m pretty certain at least half of the guys I knew and the majority of the chicks I knew in school would not get into UT now.

Bob f/m Houston & McLovin - Yes, the Top 10% in-state acceptance thing certainly was a contributor - if not the most dominant factor to the rise in student enrollment at Tech. During that time Lubbock was sort of booming (have an imagination, please).
In recent years, that rise has certainly plateaued - and maybe even decreased. Even the excitement the football team has increasingly caused can bring people to West Texas: Just look at their Football Recruiting Class - awful, but that’s neither here nor there…
