Ironically that game was billed as USC a great team vs. 1 player for Texas.

It's sad that Mack Brown had that much NFL talent up and down his roster and he needed the best player in college football history to come up with the best performance in college football history just to eek out the victory.

Now that he's narrowed his recruiting focus to white coach's sons what are our prospects for another championship until he steps aside?

Not good. I just hope he doesn't let the talent level deteriorate to late 80's level before he decides he's had enough.

Well done, as usual, CarKev.

One of the many joys of that game was appreciating the sick talent on both sides.

Agree with Gooba's comment above. Even strong programs go through cycles. OU peaked in '03 and '04 with consecutive appearances in the MNC game and send around 20 players to the NFL. Then they struggled through '05 and the first half of '06.

Part of our problem now is we sent a similar number of players to the NFL after peaking in '04, '05 and the first half of last season and don't have many of that caliber left.

On our current roster I see maybe three NFL-likely players (Sweed, Okam and Jamaal Charles) plus maybe a half dozen that are clearly better than average and could start for most college programs (Lokey, Miller, Finley, Cosby, Griffin, possibly McCoy). After that we have a number of starters who are either career back-ups (Dallas Griffin, Foster, Palmer) or not distinguished (the sr. LB's). The remainder of our team is made up of promising kids who aren't yet ready to play at a consistently high level.

Add our chronic schematic/coaching issues and you have a 4-5 loss season. The good news is it does look like there is enough young talent to start to put it back together by the end of '08 and into '09.

Thanks, HJ. I guessed as much, based upon USC's recent success putting D-Linemen into the NFL, but haven't paid any attention to the NFL prospect "guru's" this year.

Jackson and Ellis should both go in the first 3 rounds of next year's draft.

When you bunch up enough talent to win it all, it's hard to stockpile similar talent in their vapor trail. All the odds are against maintaining it. It comes down to being able to coach up lesser talent, with a few starts thrown in. Oh...wait...

Limas has already learned to pout and not finish routes like an elite NFL WR.
