Scouting Allen vs. Euless Trinity

Had the opportunity to watch Allen’s 34-21 upset of #1 Euless Trinity yesterday.  With Florida/Bama tied at 17, we bolted mid-way through the 3rd quarter with Allen up 27-7.  I’ve seen Trinity play enough over the last 3 or 4 years to know they are in trouble, if having to line up in the shotgun with 4 wide […]

Kansas Post-Mortem

It was bleak, it was windy, it was brutal and unrelenting. It was Dave Lapham’s color analysis.
It was also the weather in Lawrence. I have no idea why Big 12 North fans chortle knowingly whenever Texas teams head north past November. Look, it gets cold in Texas. Like, 45 […]

Mangino = Death Star, Colt = Luke w/ a proton torpedo

Every time I do one of these I try to limit it to stray thoughts and let the game speak for itself. Every time I fail. I’ll try to keep this one under 7,000 words. Looks like it’s cold today. Go time.

Big 12 Betting Week 7

After a weak week, I’m 18-17-1. I blame the Big 12 North Division. I have no idea what to do with Conference USA Del Norte. Their games follow no logic and I have minimal ability to discern degrees of bad once you get past Missouri: is it offal that beats rubbish? […]

Scouting Kansas

Kansas is a must-win, not only for maintaining hopes of a Big 12 Title, BCS bowl, or improbable MNC berth, but to halt the development of a pattern of November choke jobs that have undercut program success and relegated us to second tier bowl games for the last two years. Whatever happens with the […]

Happy Halloween

Outstanding.

It’s hard out here for a pimp

The economic downturn is causing problems for everyone. Here at Barking Carnival we’ve had to switch from drinking the tears of indigenous rainforest orphans to Evian. It’s a sacrifice we’re willing to make.
Athletic departments in the Big 12 are also feeling the pain. None more so than Oklahoma State. T. Boone Pickens pledged $165 million […]

New AP Poll

Texas is a unanimous number one.
Other Big 12 teams:
4. OU
7. Oklahoma State
8. Texas Tech
16. Missouri
19. Kansas

Your Week 3 Big 12 Weekend

I am currently 8-4 ATS. This is solid work, explicable by basic probability theory. The law of large numbers will catch up with me soon and I’ll be unmasked for the fraud I am. Until then, let’s live the lie together, shall we?
Kansas @ Oklahoma (-19.5)
Will Bob Stoops allow a post-Texas hangover? […]

Texas-Mizzou game could be a national primetime telecast

The Big 12 announced their TV games for the October 18th weekend.
ABC will wait until this Sunday to decide whether Texas-Mizzou is the 2:30 or 7 pm slot. Kansas-Oklahoma will get the other ABC slot. I’d guess the winner of the Red River Shootout will be the primetime telecast.
If Texas wins, Austin will […]

Your Big 12 Football Primer, Friend-o

This is the segment in which a cattle gun is placed against my head by Anton Chigurh and I’m told to call it. I have to pick every game, even the ones I feel aren’t subject for righteous divination. I’m much better at picking winners than handicapping, but Anton has no pity. […]

36-Hour CramSession: College Football Week 3

The beauty of the unexpected bye week is that it gave us all an opportunity to see a lot more football on TV than most game weeks.
I learned the following:
Josh Nesbitt of Georgia Tech may be the best sophomore QB you haven’t heard about. That’s probably because he plays for Georgia Tech. Think […]

Big 12 Football Wrap Up

The Wrap saw some great games and several more that were unlikely to make the cut for oral tradition around campfires.
Kansas - 34
South Florida - 37
I picked South Florida to win a close one in a game dominated by both QBs. I also said that despite USF winning, KU would cover the 3.5 […]

Post-Mortem: Kansas Jayhawks @ South Florida Bulls

More from Phenomenal Smith of Atomic Teeth…
Thanks to ESNP2’s senseless and uninformative pregame show, we learned that Jim Leavitt takes in enough calories a day to make Michael Phelps look like he’s on Jenny Craig. Leavitt consumes sixteen bags of Cheetos, two cases of Pepsi, and forty-four Hershey bars a day and while he […]

Austin Is Now a Top 50 TV Market: And That Matters To The Big 12

Austin is officially a top 50 Nielsen TV Market (#49). The Market rankings were released last week for the 2008-09 season. It used to be a significant number for local stations, in that the Top 50 was a breaking point for large institutional buyers. Today, not so much, although it can’t hurt. But it matters to […]

Best and worst coaching moves in Big 12

The Kansas City Star has a list of the worst fires and best hires in the Big 12 since the conference formed.
Worst Firings
1. R.C. Slocum, Texas A&M, 2002
Probably. Blame Mack Brown for taking over the recruiting rackets, but the writing was on the wall since Texas won in College Station in ‘95. The Aggies […]

How Kansas and Mizzou rose from the ashes

The Kansas City Star, a once venerable newspaper that like all others has had trouble adapting to the internet age, ran a great piece today about Kansas and Missouri’s trek to the Preseason Top 15.

Mark Mangino, Oklahoma assistant and Kansas coaching candidate, had to be convinced when he met the Jayhawks job interview contingent led […]

2008 Kansas Football Preview - State of the Union

While the rest of the college football world went about their business last year, things were clandestinely happening in Kansas. The clues were there to any sports reporters who were paying attention. Raw materials from Texas being shipped to Lawrence. Intellectual know how taken from the breakaway Republic of Oklahoma. And a whole helluva lot […]
