Glib take on last week’s games
I finally got to sit down and watch some games this weekend.
Alabama is not as good as their ranking. They’re very one dimensional on offense, and John Parker Wilson Lewis Can’t Lose is mediocre. Any team that forces them to pass has a chance. Their defense is giving up yards but not points, and that’s the only thing that matters Texas fans.
Remember when Florida State had good quarterback play? Yeah, me neither. They’ve agreed to hand over the coaching reigns to a guy whose quarterbacks went 12-36 with 5 interceptions against Wake Forest on Saturday. Bobby Bowden has now lost three straight to Jim Grobe with the Seminole offense combining for 24 points in those three losses.
Tim Tebow is now my Heisman favorite after rolling up 124 total yards against Tennessee, mostly in 2.2 yard chunks. Much has been made about Urban Meyer’s inability to find a tailback, but he hasn’t found a receiver outside of Percy Harvin either. The Gators will win this year because of defense, but they won’t win the SEC.
Matt Stafford gets away with a lot of stuff. Throwing off his back foot, throwing late, throwing high, etc. His job is not to lose the game. Think of him as Craig Krenzel with a better arm. Georgia’s defense is outstanding, and that’s why they’re going to win the SEC.
Ohio State found their new quarterback in Terrelle Pryor. When they get Beanie Wells back, they’ll suddenly find themselves with two playmakers in the backfield. And then Jim Tressel will promptly handcuff them with his conservative offense.
Baylor’s Robert Griffin is very good, but he’s playing for Art Briles. That means he’ll never have a defense worth a damn.
Les Miles coaches without fear. It will come back to haunt him at some point (along with poor QB play), but for now LSU is a fun team to watch because Miles lets his playmakers make plays.

If UGA can slow down Bama’s ground game, they will roll. Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson is not going to beat the Dawgs on his own.
Stafford still makes a lot of mistakes, but he’s talented enough to overcome many of them. I think he’s a guy who thinks he can do it all. He hasn’t learned his limitations yet, but he has gotten much more careful with the ball and much more willing to throw it away rather than risk a pick.
If Pryor doesn’t start every game from here on out, tOSU fans should revolt.
I keep waiting for Miles’ craziness to catch up to him, but it still hasn’t happened. The guy has got balls of steel, you have to give him that.

“If Pryor doesn’t start every game from here on out, tOSU fans should revolt”.
seeing how they will revolt if you ban the sale of katzenmoyer jerseys that’s not saying much

Sir the OSU fans are revolting.
That’s right they stink on ice.

I couldn’t agree more. The QB play in the SEC is nothing short of atrocious. Tebow has looked like shit all year. Should knock him down to 2nd in the heisman race. Be pretty funny/sad when a guy gets invited to NY with 1,500 yards passing, 800 yards running and 15 total TDs. Stafford will win the Heisman by completing 55% of his passes for 15 TDs and 12 Ints. Meanwhile Colt, Daniel and Bradford will be wondering what the hell is going on when they each finish with 70% completions, 40 TDs and 4,000+ yards and aren’t invited to NY. Sanchez and Moreno will join Tebow and Stafford at the ceremony.
Charlie Ward? Do I win a recliner?
Griffin is going to be better than very good. Will be a lot of 52-49 games in Waco over the next 4 years.
Nice recap.

Chris Weinke was technically “good” I suppose.

mdr, I think you are going to be unpleasently surprised this weekend. You can think of Bama as SC with an offense.
September 22, 2008 at 2:49 pm
If Briles uses Griffin the way he should and builds an offense around him, the coach may get some good defensive players despite himself. Recruits want a winning program and they want exposure so that they can hopefully get to the next level. Briles may be able to supply both…eventually.

Robert Griffin is the truth.

It’s amazing it took until three games into Septeber for Tressel to realize that Pryor should be his QB over a guy who likely would be hard pressed to be the starting QB for Sigma Chi in the Intramural touch football league. I chalk it up to the anal retentive nature of most college football coaches who for the most part will opt for a “game manager” at QB rather than a playmaker if given the choice. Keeps them in control and not the player. Tressel will just have to exert his control in other ways such as plays lifted from the Woody Hayes 1975 OSU playbook.

lowery21 is right, SC only scored two TDs on Wofford. SC is miserable on offense and good, not great on D. Bama isn’t a prolific offense, but they will move the ball on the ground with three fresh backs all day. Bama isn’t a long shot to win this.

This weekend was the first I’ve seen of Pryor. (I don’t follow recruiting and I missed the USC-tOSU game.)
Holy shit, that guy is big! He may be the first “next Vince Young” who is in any way shape or form worthy of the comparison.

I don’t think anyone’s suggesting Bama is a long shot to win this game. I expect it to be a very tough, physical game on both sides. It remains to be seen if they can really move the ball on the ground all day against the Georgia D though.

I just don’t see how anyone could run consistently against that Georgia D, especially if they do not have a complementary pass game. If Bama can do that, then they have one hell of an offensive line. But the problem for Georgia would be their O-Line and whether they will not get manhandled by a very physical Bama D-line. In order for Georgia to win, Stafford is going to have to play a very good game. I do not think that Georgia will be able to run on Bama, so Moreno probably will not be much of a direct factor. The game will be in Stafford’s hands. If he does not play up to snuff, then I think that Bama probably takes this one.
