Houston interviews 3 coaches not named Greg Davis
The University of Houston has interviewed three candidates thus far for their head coaching position.
The UH athletic director met with OU co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin yesterday and has interviewed Notre Dame offensive coordinator Michael Haywood and old guy Jack Pardee.
Sumlin would be my pick. Haywood would actually have to recruit the city of Houston if he became the Cougars’ coach (yeah, I’m still bitter), and Pardee has been out of coaching for over a decade. Or longer depending on how you view his hands off style.
Interesting note in the Chronicle story. The team is practicing under interim coach Chris Thurmond, and had their first bowl practice yesterday. It “featured the first live hitting since Briles took over the program in 2003.”
Houston’s total defense rankings under Briles: 101, 78, 76, 72 and 49.
Coincidence?

Sheesh, I didn’t realize UH was that high in total defense this year (49th). Texas is 54th, behind Tech (50), Arizona (51), and Cal (53), and whole bunch of other crappy teams.

including Texas! As a crappy team!

Haywood as a head coach is just flat out laughable. He doesn’t do anything at ND, other than fetching Weis his Krispy Kreme, taking notes and managing the subs. The latter he some times struggles with. His position is in title only.
Haywood is the Fred Thompson of coaching hires.

wow, you mean another off season is passing without any greg davis job interviews? only rumors from friends of friends that there are schools interested in him. haven’t these schools seen his stats?

UH fan here. First, I will admit that I am petty, small and envious - and I root against UT as a result. Second, let me also admit that this is one of the best blogs out there, and I read it on a daily basis. Great stuff, well written and just plain funny.
I don’t pay attention to the OU coaching staff like you folks do, I have no doubt. What is the skinny or your opinion on Sumlin?

Haywood may have been the weakest assistant we ever had (under Mack), and that’s saying something. Sit down, Tim Nunez.

Initially, I was impressed by what I heard re: Haywood. But more and more, in light of comments like this, I think I’d be disappointed with him.
Sumlin sounds intriguing, but I admit I only know what I’ve read on message boards/blogs.

RE: No offers for Davis.
Does it intrique you that your local grocery store doesn’t call up various VPs of Fortune 500 companies when they have a store manager vacancy?
December 7, 2007 at 1:46 pm
What if said VP was only qualified because his buddy was named CEO of aforementioned company and was barely qualified to run aforementioned local grocery store?
December 7, 2007 at 4:45 pm
what is aforementioned OC was not hired by small grocery store because all he was good for was fellating cucumbers in the produce section?

This “interviewing non-Greg Davis candidates” business is all a smokescreen.
December 7, 2007 at 5:31 pm
i doubt if cougar high will hire Davis
He probably wouldn’t go there anyway
have you ever seen their campus and facilities?
Better off at a 4A HS

mileslong, echeese just posted that Davis is the best goshdarned cucumber fellator in the whole danged grocery business.

UH’s indoor practice facility is actually really nice.

Baylor is going to have Davis in for an intensive interview this coming week. Hiring Art Briles was a smokescreen.

“have you ever seen their campus and facilities?”
Frenchy’s chicken is located about a quarter mile from the UH campus, so it’s got that going for it.

GatoRojo,
I like Sumlin. He was the WRs coach at Purdue under Joe Tiller and at A&M under Slocum. He even took over the OC duties at A&M for a brief time, and he was calling the plays when they upset OU in 2002.
He’s young and black which usually translates to ‘he’s a good recruiter.’ I think OU assigns him to the Houston area and Louisiana, but Houston hasn’t done particularly well in either area.
Hopefully some Sooners can chime in with their thoughts.

Thanks for the info, HJ. From what I know, I’d be happy w/ Sumlin or Tulsa’s OC (Malzahn - sp?) and Mizzou’s OC (Christensen).
retrobater - Cougar High, huh? Man, that’s a good one. Original, too. You pen that one yourself? I won’t debate how good UH’s facilities are/aren’t with you - although Mack Tripper has a more accurate perception. And I agree that GD won’t be on our sidelines next year. Mostly, if not exclusively, because we wouldn’t/don’t want him. Now get your mind around how sad this is for you . . . Poor Ol’ Cougar High - crappy facilities and all - looks down its nose at *your* coaches. Wow. Good luck in 2008.

Gato, please reconsider. Greg Davis is the best offensive coordinator in all of college football and he would immediately turn around your football fortunes. Also, considering the fact that no one ever flunks out of UH, he can recruit without ever getting off his bicycle. Think of the money you do not spend on recruiting that you can utilize for other things; like armed guards walking your students to class.

Despite Bigg’s recommendation - I still pass on GD. However, this is spiraling out of control here - didn’t come by to flame. Merely to see what y’all knew bout Sumlin.
