Jack Pardee takes Viagra, projects staff

height=Looks like the University of Houston is serious about hiring Jack Pardee as their next head coach. According to the Houston Chronicle, UH has narrowed the search to Pardee and Notre Dame offensive coordinator Michael Haywood.

Pardee, who has been out of coaching for a decade, has gone so far as to project what his staff would look like. It would include “current assistants Jason Phillips (wide receivers), Bubba McDowell (cornerbacks), Tony Fitzpatrick (defensive line) and interim coach Chris Thurmond, with newcomers like former SMU assistant Ronnie Vinklarek (offensive line), Tomball High’s Tommy Kaiser (S-backs and special teams), Arlington Bowie coach Kenny Perry (safeties) and former Cougars quarterback David Klingler (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach).”

Klingler is currently a PhD student at Dallas Theological Seminary. Seriously.

No word on whether Houston will only schedule day games so as not to interfere with Pardee’s six o’clock bedtime.

I keep trying to type up some witty (to me) retort, but nothing can top the reality here. Pardee versus Haywood? Torbush.

    Wow.

This is the slow death of the Houston football program. They clearly no longer have an interest in spending the money on facilities or competing. Seems like they’ve given up.

Rice may end up being the best team in that city.

Either coach will be great comedy.

UH fan here - and I have to agree that neither of these guys would be my first or second choice. Or third. I think either has more downside than upside, especially in light of some of the other candidates that were discussed.

I’d disagree w/ Mockingbird, though, that we aren’t willing to spend the money. . . we were paying Briles almost a million a year, and would’ve given him a raise had he stuck around. And the rumors are (admittedly, rumors) that we are in the process of finalizing a plan/contributions to make upgrades to the stadium. However . . . we don’t have BCS money coming in or the other revenue sources that B12 schools do to match you guys dollar for dollar. That much is true.

But we do spend what we have, I think. We just don’t have as much. And, while we may never be on the national stage again (sadly), I suspect we’ll still be (generally) better than Rice.

Can’t see Pardee as anything other than a short term fix.

HJ - if he is a *fix* at all (short or long term), I will take it . . . meaning, if he can continue the progress made over the last 5 years, then I will be ecstatic. I fear that this would be a Drexler-esque situation, which as you may recall, was a fiasco.

I can’t believe you guys passed on Sumlin. He is long overdue for a head coaching job.

I’m glad you did though. I want him as our OC. I think hiring Sumlin is the only thing ur fans have unanimously agreed on in my lifetime.

South - you and me both. The more I learned, the more I wanted him.

South ‘06, Sumlin is going to get one of these openings or stand pat at OU until he gets one next year IMO.

Well, well . . . maybe Christmas came a few weeks early. Sumlin appears to be back in the mix at UH and H’wood is out. Pardee is still being mentioned, but I’d think they’d have hired him straight away rather than consider Sumlin again if this wasn’t Sumlin’s to lose.
