Mack vs Mack
So Chip Brown of the Dallas Morning News said on his radio show yesterday something to the effect of ‘John Mackovic’s best players would be Mack Brown’s best players.’
Now I didn’t listen to the show because I think people who listen to sports radio are even more despicable than people who read blogs. Except the people reading this blog. You’re clearly different.
I think he meant that if you took the best players Mackovic recruited at each position, they would beat a team made up of the best players Brown recruited at each position. Now I don’t find this the least bit interesting because the team with Vince Young wins.
But it did elicit quite the argument on Orangebloods, mostly because stupid people think that Brown was saying the Mackovic was the better coach/recruiter/sommelier. He’s not/not/is, and that’s why he got fired.
But I’ll throw you assholes some red meat anyway.

Which team wins?

Richmond Mcgee’s

The only place Mackovic’s team is better on your list is at DT, RB, and especially at kicker.
Macks team would win by 30. Seeing that group of LBs trying to tackle VY would be hysterical, though.
Just look at the number of real NFL players. 10 on Mackovics, 19-20 on Macks.

it depends. who is the O coordinator.
john mac>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>greg davis.
ergo, john mac wins. but mack has vince and vince is greg davis proof.
toss up.

No, sorry, Mackovic’s offense was just as erratic as Davis’s has been. The OL play under Mackovic was superior than under Brown, but nothing else.
Defensively, this is not even a contest. As Bartoncreek said, Mack’s team wins by 30.
May 7, 2008 at 11:52 am
Mack’s team wins by 30? Is that just VY and the huge discrepancy in talent/ability at LB? IMO the only other area in which the talent clearly favors Mack is the OL; otherwise I see it as a push.

Don’t forget. Coaching doesn’t factor into this. We’re just talking talent level alone. Like if you took each team, put them on another planet and had them play. Like Marvel Comics did with Secret Wars.

Clearly, Mackovic brought in some top-notch talent at the high end, which is why this comparison makes it seem like a fair fight. But his classes were filled out with one or two superstars and a bunch of slow, unathletic nobodies.
Mack, on the other hand, brings in the superstars and a bunch of very good players. Unlike Mackovic, he takes very few kids (usually 1 or less in a given year) that don’t appear on a state Top 100 list.
Pairing these guys off merely based on their first-string all-star teams distorts the comparison and leads one to believe that Mack is a better coach than he is. He’s still way better than Mackovic, overall, but the talent level in our program under these two coaches is not nearly as close as this analysis implies.
In my view, the better comparison would pit Mackovic’s best 85-ship roster vs. Mack’s best 85. When you do that, the comparison is night and day.

Good point.
May 7, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Good, but not on, point.
May 7, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Point good.
May 7, 2008 at 1:33 pm
If Vince only runs and throws 5-10 yard outs and screens, he wins. If asked to throw deep and deep crossing routes, Mackovic wins.
May 7, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I will knock the piss out of someone! Then I will get a 15 yard penalty for celebration.
May 7, 2008 at 1:56 pm
I see two people on the Mackovic team (Lewis and Jammer) who had success only after Brown changed their positions.
May 7, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I’ll see your 15-yard celebration penalty and raise you a 15-yard facemask behind the play.
May 7, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Get out of the game Robert.
And replace Lokey with me.
May 7, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Well, didn’t Superman’s team win when they fought the Secret Wars?
If so, then Mack wins with Vince every time.
May 7, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Superman is DC, not Marvel.
You disgust me.

I bet you own a copy of the very rare Mary Worth in which she has advised a friend to commit suicide.
May 7, 2008 at 3:58 pm
I’ll Take James Brown at QB with Mackovic’s team.
May 7, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Well I’ll be damned…
Chip proposed for his chapter in the football annual this year an All-Mack team at the ten year mark, with a complementary side by side look at the All-Mackovic team, which is quite a group, relative to his success.
I thought it was a great idea.
Less great idea: talking about the topic on the radio before the annual is available at bookstores.
FWIW, I agree with HenryJames all the way. No question who wins between the two squads on the field because of VY. But the discussion is limited to paper, and we cap a player’s value at 10 out of 10 or something, then it becomes a real conversation.
May 7, 2008 at 5:34 pm
James Brown the hardest working QB in football. Hit me one time!
May 7, 2008 at 9:45 pm
How does Mack’s son in law play into all of this?
May 7, 2008 at 11:29 pm
just where the fuck is nathan vasher?
May 8, 2008 at 1:35 am
Put me on the Mackovic team and I will torch Aaron Ross. I have done it repeatedly over the course of multiple decades.
May 8, 2008 at 7:55 am
No Taje Allen, eh? Is it because he kind of wasn’t good at playing defensive back? Is that what we’re doing here, holding people accountable for on-field performance?
May 8, 2008 at 8:08 am
Vasher played safety at one point and should replace Marcus Griffin in Mack’s lineup.
Applewhite on Mac’s QB list doesn’t make sense. James Brown, minus his Sr year, was the man.
May 8, 2008 at 7:05 pm
O Line - First, you’ve gotta replace Roesler with that big guy by the name of Brockermeyer. And with that, Mackovic’s O line is a tad bit better than Mack’s, especially, as was mentioned by another, his O lines simply executed much better than Mack’s (need I bring up the Tim Nunez years??? )
QB - Mack wins with VY and Simms as his backup.
WR- Mack wins.
RB - Mackovic in a no-brainer. Plus he’d actually have good depth here, with Shon Mitchell, McGarity, Hodges, Ricky Brown.
D-Line - you must admit Mackovic’s D line easily beats Mack’s. True, A Humph didn’t play in the League but he was a terror in college, and then there’s Brackens on the other side. And the DTs are simply the best freakin tandem in school history.
LBs - Mack wins easy.
DB’s - a push, but Mack would have far better depth.
Kicker - Mackovic in a heartbeat (Stockton & Dawson). This has been Mack’s absolute worst area of recruiting.
So, overall it’s a fairly even breakdown, but Mack has VY and a whole stable of superior depth.
May 8, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I did the all Mack Brown worst starters team and Sailor Ripley said it made Bill Little cry so he took it down.
May 8, 2008 at 8:58 pm
You are free to make Bill Little cry. In fact you are encouraged to do so. Ragging dudes who played for our beloved Horns 10 years ago who weren’t that great is misguided.
May 9, 2008 at 3:20 am
First, you’ve gotta replace Roesler with that big guy by the name of Brockermeyer.
Brockermeyer was recruited by David McWilliams.
May 9, 2008 at 5:09 am
He’s not referring to Blake. Just some dude named Brockermeyer.
May 9, 2008 at 11:54 am
Ken Hackenmack - put him at Fullback for Mackovic and you have a winning backfield.
ANyone know whatever happened to him? He was in the colts camp as an o-line (yes o-line) project but never made the team.
ps - yes I know I’m off by 10 yrs, but that guy was unbelievably large and humourous if you ever met him.
May 9, 2008 at 12:03 pm
I used to see his torso and legs go by more door at Jester.
