Major can still play

I didn’t need an Alabama player to confirm what I already know, but The Major could still play Div 1.

“Yeah, he can still bring it — he can still make all the throws,” Crimson Tide receiver Matt Caddell said.

Not only can he make all the throws, but there are some throws that only he can make.

“He could probably still play at this level.”

Probably? Not only could he play, but he would win the Heisman.

Major wanted to go to Alabama out of high school, but they didn’t recruit him. The next three head coaches at Alabama all were fired because of it. He originally committed to Texas A&M, but decommitted when they fired their offensive coordinator. Not signing Major was the beginning of A&M’s downfall. They’re yet to recover.

So Major signed with Texas and set Longhorn career records for yards, touchdowns, completions and attempts. And he went 44-0 as a starter and led Texas to the 2006 National Championship.

The entire Major fixation was ridiculous.

Mack made the right decision to start Simms instead of Major and anyone in our spoilied, idiotic fanbase who think differently is an idiot.

I’m a huge minority of the people who post on this site, but I frankly don’t really understand the disdain or indifference so many people here have for Major. I admit, I was a huge major guy when the time was being split, but I’ll also admit that I was still learning a lot about football at the time, and didn’t understand how Davis jacked up Simms development and handcuffed his skillset. To me it was as simple as Major wins games, Chris throws picks and can’t look off his primary target. I’ve changed my tune over the years as I’ve seen what GD really does to a team and players…but I still don’t understand why people hate on Major. The guy was tough, had minimal skills, and was a mostly smart QB who won us a lot of games. He did kind of get the shaft a bit, and that sucks for him. That being said, why piss on the guy so much? I don’t get it.

It’s not Major for which I have disdain. It’s the certain segment of our fanbase that has elevated him to cult status.

Man, I wish I was a guy who could make all the throws. As it stands, I can only make the fade with the slobber covered tennis ball into that kitchen corner behind the fireplace.

I understand that, but I’m pretty sure that horse is dead. The same people who fixated on that at the time have moved on to other things…like defending Greg Davis. I’m not sure one could head over to Hornfans and wrestle up more than a couple frothing major cultists at this point. I respect a guy who minimized Davis at times as a liability…even if he can’t throw the ball more than 35 yards.

That horse is far from dead. You see it now in the calls for Major to be the next head coach at Texas.

I never understood the “Major Applewhite wins games, Chris Simms throws interceptions” mentality. Applewhite was 22-8 (0.733) as a starter, while Simms was 26-6 (0.813).

Obviously, there is a Rudy factor at play, but you’d think the fanboys would at least learn a few facts.

What can’t somebody who preferred Chris not just let a nice article about Applewhite go by without having a knee-jerk negative reaction? Simms isn’t even mentioned in the OP.

Just because the Simms backers (I managed to like them both and generally agreed with Brown’s decisions on who to play) coined the “cult” term first doesn’t mean they don’t engage in some cultish behavior themselves.

    Let it the fuck go.

HJ, are you saying you don’t think Major is a fairly talented young coordinator? Honest question. I don’t want him as a HC next, but I think I’d like him as OC. And if he gets a shot at HC at some smaller programs and does well, why wouldn’t be make a good HC at Texas 10 years from now?

JimmyJazz, you don’t think Simms had a tendency to stare at his primary target a bit? Make some mental errors? He was not the most mentally tough individual. Don’t you think just looking at records as a starter and nothing else is sort of like Mack and Greg pointing out how awesome and recording setting our offenses are? Ken Dorsey has a ridiculous win/loss record. Miami would have likely sucked without him, for sure.

Again, I’m not touting major as the end all and be all, but if hindsight is 20/20, did hitching our wagon to Chris Simms really do that much for us, either?

No fucking way am I getting dragged into a Simms-Applewhite debate. I just think it’s nuts to label Applewhite a “winner” while inferring that Simms was something less when in point of fact he won more games as well as a higher percentage.

    I liked both kids, too.

  20. BigSatan
    November 1, 2007 at 10:48 am

Alright, I see your point on labeling him as a winner that way. Fair enough. I’m sure it all comes down to him melting down in the championship game against Colorado.

i’m a die hard OU fan and there wasn’t a bigger Major enthusiast in Norman when he played. He’s what college football was all about.

I hated Mack for ever putting in Chrissy(minus OU/Texas of course). Loved hearing Major switching a goal line play to a sneak and then chunking the ball in the stands b/c he was pissed at the coaches.

Well, boy, I know The Major really appreciates that particular endorsement.

    Hooboy.
