Michigan hires Rich Rodriguez
After being turned down by Les Miles and Greg Schiano, they appear to have gotten a good one. Michigan fans can take heart. Ohio State’s only loss this year was to an Illinois team that runs the spread.
Now we’ll see what Rodriguez can do in a tougher conference. We’ll also see what he can do with much better players on defense.

Take OU and give the points in the Fiesta Bowl.
December 16, 2007 at 3:07 pm
So I guess he didn’t REALLY want to stay at his alma mater like he said last year when he turned down bama.

For a lot of coaches, the Alabama job is not as attractive as Michigan.
Don Nehlen is a legend in West Virginia. He is the winningest coach in school history, and was the coach for 21 years before retiring and being replaced by Rodriguez.
Nehlen was an assistant under Bo at Michigan before going to WVU and he told Rodriguez in no uncertain terms that he was nuts if he didn’t go.

Wonder if this means Terrel Pryor to Michigan? He was considering WVU bc of RR and that offense. And there is obviously no QB in Ann Arbor right now that can run that offense. He would be starting next year as a true frosh for sure.

Great hire for Michigan. Sucks to be WV now.
December 16, 2007 at 4:42 pm
The ink wasn’t dry on the contract when Terrelle Pryor announced that he was adding Michigan to his list of schools to visit, and dropping Tennessee and WVU.

Get ready for a bunch of Mallet transferring to aggy rumors.
December 17, 2007 at 7:15 am
I’d say Arkansas is more likely.
December 17, 2007 at 7:20 am
Sure, but aggy won’t realize that.
December 17, 2007 at 7:33 am
“It’s a privilege to be the guy after coach Carr,” Rodriguez said.
No shit.
December 17, 2007 at 8:14 am
And once again, Coach Davis was the second choice for a head coaching positions at a huge traditional power. Lady luck is sure smiling on the good old Texas Longhorns. How else can you explain the program’s uncanny ability to retain the greatest offensive mind in the history of sport?
One of these days, some lucky program is going to snatch up Greg Davis and let him lead their team to the Promised Land. But the Longhorn faithful can sleep peacefully tonight, calmed by the knowledge that, for at least one more season, the Chessmaster will be calling the plays for the Orange and White.

Mallett to TE? Sucks for him.
December 17, 2007 at 5:57 pm
What’s this shit about GD and interest from big-time programs? Gotta be kidding if there was any serious interest in him from the likes of Michigan (or, as someone else said on another board, ‘Bama, if Saban surprises). Not only is he not HC material, but his track record is poor and spotty at the absolute best in that regard. He doesn’t have the aura or personality for a big-time HC job.
However, if it’s our aim simply to wish, then press on!

Chi Chi must be so proud.

Just got another e-mail from an aggy I know saying Tuberville to A&M is a done deal.

“Just got another e-mail from an aggy I know saying Tuberville to A&M is a done deal.”
In our defense, his agents did sniff out the job. They probably just wanted to know what we were willing to pay so they could strongarm Auburn, but we didn’t pull that out of thin air.
Wanna hear a new one? Talks are ongoing with Major to bring him onto our staff as passing game coordinator/QB coach. No shit.
December 18, 2007 at 8:53 am
Was it from Franchione?
December 18, 2007 at 9:00 am
Bastards…
In our defense, Tubs’ agents did sniff around the job. They were probably just trying to gauge what we were willing to pay so they could strongarm a raise out of Auburn (again), but we didn’t pull that one completely out of our asses.
Wanna hear a new one? We are in serious talks with Major to come on board in a role similar to Sumlin’s at OU. No shit.
December 18, 2007 at 9:24 am
Not a surprise about The Major. Slocum wanted to hire him as a grad assistant back in 2002, and the guy has had 4 jobs in the last 4 years.

The Sherman hire was a smokescreen to distract from the ongoing Spurrier talks. Expect some big news soon.

The Spurrier talks were a smokescreen to distract from the ongoing Cowher talks. Expect some even bigger news soon.

Oops… damn work computer.
Touche, boys. I’ll concede this one. But just wait until Texas is looking for a new HC. I will be watching your predictions like a hawk!
So back to the original topic: Do you think it was worth it for Rodriguez to make himself a persona non gratis at his alma matter? Not only did he take the Michigan job, but he is fighting WVU to get out of his buyout by saying his contract negotiations were subsversive.
Is there a “right way” to leave a coaching job for a better gig?
December 18, 2007 at 11:31 am
All of which are distractions while they negotiate with the three real leading candidates: Bill Belichik, Head Coach of the New England Patriots, George W. Bush, President of the United States, and Batman, Caped Crusader of Gotham City.
December 18, 2007 at 11:34 am
There really isn’t a right way, and I think most of that is the timing. College coaches are invariably fired after their last game, and the potential replacement, if he’s any good, is still coaching his team. As long as ADs insist on having their replacement named in December, there will continue to be hurt feelings.
If you want to see a Texas fan squirm, ask them about Mack Brown’s departure from North Carolina.
December 18, 2007 at 6:33 pm
HenryJames, what about Mack Brown’s departure from North Carolina?
December 18, 2007 at 8:24 pm
When Mack’s name first came up as a replacement for Mackovic he told his team and his AD at North Carolina he was not interested. He repeated that sentiment to the press.
After he was hired, North Carolina had his replacement, (Carl Torbush) coach the team in the Gator Bowl.
December 18, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Yeah, I know that, but I wanted people to squirm.
December 18, 2007 at 9:53 pm
In that case, make ‘em watch Fox announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman fawn over Jessica Simpson in her pink Tony Romo Jersey.
