Nebraska AD supports Callahan, other lost causes
I didn’t know Nebraska AD Steve Pederson had a radio show, but that’s not important. What is important is what he said on it last night. He basically pledged his support for head football coach Bill Callahan and the rest of his staff.
“What I’ve tried to do is be supportive and encouraging and make sure our coaches and players know we have tremendous confidence in them, belief in them, and we’re doing all we can to help them succeed,” Pederson said. “We just don’t leave people hanging out. That’s not my way. We’re keeping them pepped up and focused, our players in particular. It’s important that they get rejuvenated.”

‘I just don’t leave people hanging out, Fredo. That’s not my way.’
None of this was unexpected. What was unexpected was when he said, “I’ve always believed some of the most memorable experiences you have in athletics are when you go through the toughest times together.”
Pederson wisely refused to take calls from listeners.

““I’ve always believed some of the most memorable experiences you have in athletics are when you go through the toughest times together.”
What Dennis Francione wouldn’t give to hear Bill Byrne say that.

As with Nueter Dame, there is a special pleasure in seeing Nebraska struggle simply because of all the years that they had advantages available to no other school. The county scholarships (whcih still exist but must be limited to kids who meet NCAA minimums); the ability to enroll absolute brain-stems and qualify them AFTER they enroll at NU and last but not least, the steroids.

“Give credit to Baylor,” Mackovic said after the game. “They jumped on us early. We battled back but that field goal try was a little long. I wish we had been a little closer.”

I go back and forth regarding Callahan. I liked him in Sidekicks, but hated him in Jerry Maguire.

Sorry Domer, but like the guy at a seedy airport motel sitting in a bathtub full of ice hooked up to an IV with a kidney missing, the Nebraska County Scholarship idea is an urban myth. You must not have really gone to ND if you think that NU could get away with County Scholarships but say no one at Texas or OU could crack the code to figure out how to do it. BTW, I wouldn’t talk too much smack about Callahan given how your “genius” coach has done this year with recruiting advantages that vastly overcome any perceived admissions issues you ND fans love to whine about ad nausea.

Yeah, you won’t find anybody at Barking Carnival holding the Texas staff’s fee to the fire! Beyond reproach, I tell you.

everyone on the internet is an expert on football.

“everyone on the internet is an expert on football.”
I wish I had a Tivo so I could prove that you are wrong about that.
October 10, 2007 at 12:12 pm
OK let me change it - Everyone on the internet claims to be an expert on football (and every other subject). It is pretty hard to verify who is and who ain’t unless you really are an expert.

None of us are claiming to be experts. I let my stuff speak for itself. If you don’t like it, let’s argue (amicably of course).

I am a sweepstakes expert.
October 10, 2007 at 12:35 pm
my statement is about the internet in general - not this site
I take the good points made about the marginal coaching(which are many so far this year - like where was the downfield passing game prior to OU etc.) You guys give me another good and different perspective. I don’t have time to study football myself.
I mainly visit the site because Henry James is one funny dude and Scipio writes very well (as does HJ). I also like the free flowing nature of the place as opposed to the highly structured hornfans.

Fair enough then.

The Gestapo was “highly structured”. hornfans is something else entirely.
