Nick Saban self scouts; finds out why people thinks he’s a ‘dick’

Good article in The Birmingham News today about Alabama coach Nick Saban and how he self scouts. The writer also has a bit more information on his blog.

Saban says he does it for two reasons:

1. To figure out what is and isn’t working

2. To figure out his own tendencies

Now before all you Texas fans start sending it to Mack Brown and Greg Davis, I’d like to remind you that Texas defeated LSU in the 2002 Cotton Bowl.

So there.

    You see that’s called “coaching”.

“I think you learn that more by analyzing a player’s strength and weaknesses,” Saban said. “I don’t think you get that necessarily from (self-scout), you know what I’m saying? (His daughter) Kristen knows that Terry Grant’s a better outside runner than jimmy johns. [Now he starts to smile] I mean, you don’t need a computer for that.”

I would think that’s why you don’t use the toss more with CO than with JC. Someone get GD a computer…..or some new fucking glasses.

    From the blog:

“”On D, you’re always trying to stay ahead of the down and distance, aight?” Saban said. “So a successful play on 1st-and-10 is to make it 2nd-and-7. A successful play on 2nd-and-10 is to make it 3rd-and-4 or more. But how you call the game and what you’re defending kind of determines that, too. In other words, if you’re calling pass defense on 2nd-and-10 and they run the ball, you’re going to be softer against the run than if you called a run defense on 1st-and10. So a successful play on that call might be a 5-yard gain, where a 3-yard gain on the other call is the minimum of success.”"

To Greg Davis, a successful play is making it to 3rd and 8.

To Greg Davis, a successful play is taking what the defense gives him. In our case, that usually involves a rather rough treatment of our collective hind quarters.

Every day is Christmas when you’re Greg Davis.
