Re: Kongo - Yeah, my late night brain meant takedowns and I wrote ground game. Kongo doesn’t thrive down there, but he has learned some nice little takedowns from Rampage.

I can see how you could hate Leben. He is much more of the brawler from the early days of the sport than the master of all MMA that Silva is. Still, the guy really brought it yesterday. You have to admire his toughness.

I thought Kongo’s ground game was about as solid as Ketchum’s spelling ability. Herring won that fight, no doubt about it. I just hope he gets a better haircut for his next fight.

My report card:

I went 3-2 on a very competitive card. This was a good night of fights.

Wins:

Silva over Henderson in R2, rear-naked choke. As I suspected, Henderson didn’t have it in the scramble and Silva’s jiu-jitsu is much better than he’s given credit for. I nailed this fight stylistically, but it happened in a much more compressed time span than I anticipated. Silva really is that good.

Okami over Tanner. Okami is a very difficult guy to deal with when he’s on top of his game. Tanner was game, but this wasn’t going to happen for him.

Fitch over Wilson. Wilson rocked Fitch in round 1 and that was his highlight. Fitch asserted himself down the stretch to take the last two rounds and the unanimous decision.

Losses:

Herring over Kongo. Very close fight. Well, what do you know? Kongo developed a ground game. Great takedowns. And Heath Herring followed a coherent game plan. Herring’s side mount game was sick in the 3rd. Heath wins the razor close split decision. You could make a argument for Kongo as the winner, but Heath had all the momentum in the final round…

Leben vs. Legionarius. I knew it would end quickly. I picked the Eye-talian because I hate Leben so much. It clouded my judgement. Let that be a lesson to me.

Anderson Silva is one bad MOFO. Its either going to be a long painful day or a real quick near death experience for Dan Henderson.

Of course you are. As I’ve said before, you need to be in a Coen Brothers movie.

As opposed to a Robert Stigwood movie - The historical abortion known as Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (film version - with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton) is on at the moment, and it’s gloriously awful.

Donald Pleasance doing “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” rivals only George Burns’ “Fixing a Hole” for musical catastrophe. I have my iTunes Beatles playlist cued up to wash this shit out of my brain.

Oh, and several of the talking head shows (PTI, Around the Horn) covered MMA’s upcoming role on CBS, and as you might guess, the fogies’ lines were either “I’m not sure about this” to “This is the end of American civilization.” Sub “blogs” for “MMA”, and you get the same reaction.
