Marquette and Texas High School Basketball
So Buzz Williams is the next in line to try his hand at rekindling Al McGuire’s magic. Well, what does that and Texas High School basketball have to do with the price of beer in Milwaukee. Evidently a bunch. Williams was an assistant to Billy Clyde at TAMU before his stints as the head man at New Orleans and an assistant’s gig with Crean at UMMU. A little Texas connection. Fine.
So I’m enjoying a brat and beer at the Milwaukee International Airport when I feel my Longhorn blood start to boil. You know the feeling. Like when you see Brian Bosworth in a B movie or Barry Switzer hugging a carny. Well, into terminal B walks Josh Pastner on his cell phone talking about how Lute breaks clipboards and colors his hair silver. Anywho, Josh was interviewing for the Marquette assistant gig which he’ll probably land. So, don’t be surprised if you start seeing some Texas basketball flavor interspersed with fat German chicks in one of the 1800 bars in the Milwaukee area in the years to come. You’ll know them by their shivering.

What do you think of Oklahoma State’s potential hiring of Travis Ford?
I’ll hang up and listen.

Done.

In terms of coaching, he was solid at UMASS. He’ll have to keep the connection in Dallas going for recruiting, but with Pickens behind the curtain they shouldn’t miss a beat.

He’s pretty but little. Glen Dorsey could shoot him through his colon like an Aboriginal blowdart.

Wow, what a coup that would be for Marquette!.
Trips, how certain are you that Josh will get the job? If he does, when will it be announced as there are some AAU tourneys down in Texas this weekend.
As a geeked MU fan, I am really excited about Buzz and the possibility of Pastner.

I’m not certain, but Buzz and the university would be crazy not to hire him given the pull he and his family have with some stout Texas talent.
I also think Josh would be crazy not to take it if the numbers are right. U of A is a pretty crazy place right now, and as revered as Lute is down there, the Sutton firing reminds of how frail legacy relationships can be when big dollars are at stake.

Wow, is right. Boy, I hope this happens. Very interesting. Pastner would be a great hire, it seems.
In terms of money, I doubt that would be a problem. Buzz was making a mint as an assistant at Marquette last year. The money is there.

And it is MU, not UM. Marquette University.

You’ll have to forgive us. We cohabitate with the former Big 8 schools, which have a nasty habit of completely ignoring the logical standard of putting the initials in the same order as the full school name.
University of Oklahoma = OU
University of Missouri = MU
University of Kansas = KU
and so on and so forth.

And if your school doesn’t have a football team, we really don’t care all that much about it.

Marquette already has a Texas flavor — new head coach Buzz Williams is a native Texan. Going into this season the Warriors will have three Texans on the roster……..Pastner to MU, wow. Talk about a staff built around recruiting

Trips, first time caller, first time listener. Love you’re writing style. And I hope you are right about Pastner.
You haven’t lived until you’ve had green beer in April at a dive bar in Milwaukee.

“Love you’re writing style.”
Best burn ever.

It’s good to see Texans watching the basketball scene rather than the football scene.
And about the MU fb reference: I do recall Marquette playing a certain team from Texas in the first Cotton Bowl (TCU won 16-6).

Looks like little Pastner is going to end up at Memphis.
