Texas routs the Aggies. The Grades

Shooting the basketball covers a lot of ills and makes up for all kinds of deficiencies. The game of basketball becomes a simple, simple game when you can ring the bell at a high rate of success. We saw that last night when the number 7 Texas Longhorns delivered a knockout blow by hitting on 4 three point bombs and a couple of midrange field goals to jump out to a 16-4 lead in the first five minutes of a revenge game. The Aggies never truly recovered getting no closer than 9 points the rest of the way.

Shooting the ball well is fine, but when you couple it with stifling perimeter defense and aggressive helping interior defense, you get the outcome Texas enjoyed last night, a 27 point destruction of an in state rival. On a night when Texas was a smoldering 9-27 from the field, Texas held the bigger and purportedly more physical Aggies to just 30% from the field and played even with them on the backboards leaving no doubt as to which team is the big dog in the State of Texas. On to the grades.

DJ Augustin. A+.I wonder if DJ heard or read about his slump a time or two in the last couple days. I’m guessing yes after he played what amounts to the most complete game of the year for him in a 27 point 9-14 offensive barrage that left the Aggies without any answer defensively. And for the purists, he dished out 9 assists, blowing by every Aggie defender Turgeon ran at him in an effort to defend the high screen and roll. We’ve been calling for some midrange game out of the all-American point guard and we got it last night. Couple his feathery pull-ups and drive and dish dribble drives and I think he’s found his answer to the hyper-aggressive helping defense that has stifled him over the last two weeks. Obviously DJ was your player of the game, and deservedly so. This team can be scary good when he’s playing the role of floor general.

Damion James. A. A nice response here from James rebounding against the opponent that got him benched just two and half weeks ago. I thought he looked for his face up game within the flow of the offense on all but 1 or 2 looks. His deep perimeter threat makes this offense so dynamic in general and opens up driving lanes for Damion individually. You saw that with his explosive drive to the goal off a dribble hand-off out of our 3 man weave look. A nice wrinkle that took advantage of this hybrid forward’s unique skill set. And, as per usual, James pulled down his customary 9 boards and defended the bigger Aggie frontcourt like a monster. Terrific game.

Connor Atchley. A. When you talk about Connor in this game you have to start with defense. He played tremendous positional defense on bigger, stronger frontcourt players all night using a variety of full and 3 quarter fronts to make entry into the post difficult. When the ball was entered he was able to hold his position well enough to contest and even block a couple shots. He remains the best helping big man on the team and we saw that tonight as well. If he didn’t score a point he still gets the A. But he did, hitting on a huge early 3 attempt that made the Aggies honor him the rest of the night.

AJ Abrams. B. Look, I get that AJ is our gunner and he’s going to continue shoot, but I think he regressed a little from his terrific shot selection game just two nights ago. When he hit his first 3, a look that was contested in transition, I turned to my friend and said that’ll cost us in the long run. And sure enough a few forces later, it did. But to AJ’s credit he did play one of the better defensive games he’s played all year, drawing Josh Carter on more than a few possessions and limiting the terrific wing player’s strength which is catch and shoot. This allowed Mason to harass Kirk or Sloan on the ball and keeping the Aggies from getting into the meat of their offense until deep in the shot clock.

Justin Mason. A.I think it was Steven Bardo that called this Mason Elmer’s on more than one occasion during the Baylor telecast. God I hope that doesn’t stick. But JM certainly is the glue for this team. When he’s at the top of his game he allows Texas to do so much more both offensively and defensively. His stat line was a modest 2-4 for 5 points, but he dogged Aggie perimeter players all night, ran a little point (zero turnovers) to get us in our double stack look, and boarded like a power forward pulling down 8 boards. He was also 1-2 on 3 balls. Another great game for Justin.

Gary Johnson. B+.Once again, Gary Johnson gave Texas a bonafide interior scorer and defender. I thought he had a couple looks inside that he was hacked on, but he also had a goal tend that wasn’t called, so that’s a wash. Still, a solid night for Gary going 4-9 for 8 points and 7 boards in 23 minutes. He also hit a nice face up 15 footer that makes him such a difficult guard for big defenders. If he knocks that down consistently, he can be a dynamic scorer. The only knock was the two turnovers.

Reporter
DJ runs the show.

Wangmene. A. Best game of the year for Wangmene. He bothered the big Aggie frontcourt on defense early on in the game and pulled down two big boards when the game was still in doubt. On offense, he showed a couple nice turnaround jumpers giving us a glimpse of the future. Great athlete that’s slowly developing into a good basketball player.

Clint Chapman. A. Throw out the stat line eventhough it was good, more importantly Clint just looked like he belonged on the floor tonight. In eleven minutes and aside from his 2 points, 3 boards, and 2 blocks, Chapman played confidently and seemed like he could have contributed 20 quality minutes if this team needed him to. He’s going to be an all-Big 12 caliber player and it’s not a matter of if but when.

Pittman.B+. I think there were more minutes out there for Dex in this game and it’s one of the only knocks I have with the staff on this night. Up nearly 30, I would have liked to see Texas run some offense through Pittman to see what we truly have here and at the very least get him some much needed PT. His turnovers were a function of inexperience and I think that could have been addressed last night. Five minutes in a 30 point blow out for Dexter doesn’t make much sense and is my lone gripe with the coaching staff.

Coaching. A. Defensively, I don’t know if you can prepare a club any better than Texas was prepared last night. And keep in mind any and all preparation was done in a short two day turnaround. But you have to give it to Coach Barnes for scouting the Aggie personnel and getting the kids to execute their defensive assignments to near perfection. If it wasn’t for 23 foul shots, it’s somewhat in doubt that the Aggies crack 40 in this game. So, what did we do? We executed a defensive gameplan that addressed the skills, strengths, and weaknesses of each individual Aggie player but did so with a team concept.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about with respect to individual skill recognition and team concept. To start the game, we immediately doubled Jones when he caught the ball on the low block forcing him to make decisions with the basketball. Not his strong suit, as he turned the ball over twice leading to easy buckets. Helping off the double team, we defended/denied one pass away, making Jones skip the basketball using the longer pass to give us time to help and recover. When the skip was to Donald Sloan we’d close out in a manner that enticed a jumper and limited dribble penetration. Sloan shoots under 30% from deep, and he started the game 0-2 and finished 0-3. If it was skipped to Kirk, we closed out aggressively forcing Kirk to put it on the floor and while staying aware of his penchant for dishing off penetration. If Carter caught it we closed out aggressively forcing him to put it on the floor given his terrific shooting ability. With Josh being a much better finisher, though, the interior defenders were coached to aggressively step up and take away penetration after the initial help.

We executed defense based on individual scouting reports all night and held the Aggies starters + Jordan to just 15-52 from the field. Outstanding work.

On offense, I don’t think we did anything different from the last couple games. We did look for post entry off of the pick and pop which got us an open 3 with a post man kicking out. We ran our high low, our 4 out 1 in, our stack, and our bread and butter high screen. But all and all the difference in this game is we shot the ball well. And DJ Augustin controlled the game with his shooting and distribution off of penetration. I’m thoroughly surprised Turgeon was too stubborn to get out of his man-to-man, and either zone us or junk us with some triangle and two. Perhaps with the short turnaround he didn’t have the time install anything.

In any event, it was a tremendous exclamation point to a stellar week of basketball. It’s interesting that this team has shown the resilience it has and now is sniffing a 2 seed when it looked destined for no better than a 4. Hell, if the breaks fall just right, Texas could sneak into a 1 seed. If they keep improving the way they have from January to February, anything is possible in March.

Thoughts?

Y’all played great .We stunk. The officials sucked both ways or they changed the rules on goal tending and flopping for a charge. Hopefully we’ll meet in KC for a rubber match. Then again I better be careful what I hope for.

The biggest problem with the crappy calls was the effect they had on the flow of the game, IMO. If they were going to let stuff go, fine, let it go. Then the game can at least get into a rhythm.

But then they’d randomly go into hyperwhistle mode and call stuff on three straight possessions that they’d been letting go all night. Ruined what should have been a completely pleasurable viewing experience as we dismantled the Aggies.

Completely agree with your assessment of the game with the possible exception that Atchley may have deserved an A+ as well. He can’t really do more than he did last night and he certainly can’t be expected to do more. Great game from him.

Aggie Lurker, your team finished the half shooting 10 foul shots to Texas’ 1. In Austin. In a game you lost by 27 points. Your laments are interesting to say the least.

    “40 Minutes of Hell”

That’s what the game reminded me of last night. Nolan Richardson’s teams played the kind of stifling defense that we saw last night.

When D.J. knocked down that first shot, I turned to my friend and joked, “Game over.”

A&M wanted to pound the ball down low, and we simply made the entry either impossible or so damn difficult that the shot was off the mark.

Our ball help defense was outstanding. We did as good a job of “help and recover” on the inside/outside game as you can do. When A&M did get the ball down low, we anticipated with offside help, and then the rotation over to cover the kick-back was there every time.

We pressured the ball, stood strong down low, made them throw back over the top, and never game the Aggies a clear look.

The other factor that stood out to me last night was our minute distribution. We had a legitimate 9-man rotation. I thought it was against Rick Barnes religion to use more than 6 or 7 players, but last night we had 9 players getting quality minutes.

Connor Atchley was credited with 3 blocks, but it sure as hell looked like more than that. Gary Johnson and Damion James were athletic and strong on the boards, but so were Dexter Pittman, Greg Chapman and Alex Wangmene (who showed a nice touch on the turnaround at the end).

Justin Mason reminds me more and more of Royal Ivey with every passing game.

This three game stretch (Kansas, at Baylor, A&M) was a helluva lot of fun.

    Great breakdown Trips

    DJ A++++++++++++++++++++++
AJ C- forced shots, tough matchup for him
James A very solid all around game
Conor A For his defense. Never thought I’d say that
    Mason A
    GJ B
Bench A Quality minutes surprise from 7-9

DJ played great. Only forced 1 or 2 shots, penetrated at will, protected the ball and dished. Shot the ball like he is capable of doing providing he has space. Did not take it all the way to the rim vs. bigs. Just a great job of managing the game.

AJ forced a few. This is a problem, but it is a fine line for a fairly one dimensional shooter. He has shown signs of better shot selection over the last few games. Chalk it up to a tough matchup vs. ags. His defense has improved more than any single player under Barnes. Kudos to AJ for that.

Conor, Mason and James just continue to deliver in different ways. Their defense was outstanding in this game. They are unselfish and play hard. My kind of guys. Don’t get me wrong, they are not just your blue collar players, they actually have skills. In James’ case, big time skills. GJ still developing and improving while giving us really solid minutes. I would also like to see Pittman get more minutes but that doesn’t seem to be happening.

Like I said after Baylor, we could have something special going on here.

Play of the game for me was Mason rotating over on low post defense to try and take the charge on Joseph Jones, getting knocked to the floor, scrambling to his feet and the swatting Jones’ shot to an outlet man to start a break.

    Joe - He’s a guard.

Terrific player who will luckily for us be a four year guy. He’s getting better and better.

Sheesh. Atchley. Never would have thought he could be this good. After seeing his and Drago’s improvements, I look forward to seeing how good Hill, Wangmene, Pitman and Chapman can all become.

All and all a typical night in the Big XII where despite national TV, nationally ranked teams are forced to deal with junior high style officiating. It will be interesting to see if anyone else can step up for you guys if someone can shut down DJ or he gets hurt. That’s when your real rubber will meet the road.

You guys put on a clinic on how to shut us down last night. Officiating or no, you guys win that game handily.

snaterly: You guys are not in danger of “peaking too early”. You guys wrecked Tennessee and UCLA before hitting a skid. It’s a long season, and nobody gets out without a skid. I think you are playing to the level you played in OOC. I think it will carry over to the tournament, especially considering the practical home field advantage you guys will (most likely) have.

As for us, the Big IX race is doneskies. You and the Kansas teams can fight over that. We are just trying to get ourselves out of the NIT zone we have entered. It will take at least 3 more to get into the dance and the way we are playing, I’m not considering it a lock.

The moral of the story is: good game. You guys should be excited about March.

Let’s face it. Big 12 refs suck. Lots of refs suck. It’s not a new thing.

The problem is that there is a large population of sports people that could do a better job than many of the refs we see working our team’s games (not sarcastic). The problem is that these people would never want to ref the games and would never commit to a lifetime of being an official.

It’s a relatively thankless job. And the typical requirements are that a person loves the sport, is willing to travel a hell of a lot, and doesn’t have other commitments preventing their participation.

That’s not a huge pool of people. At one point I was going to get into football officiating. Too much of a time commitment with a young family and my work, so dropped that one. I don’t mind bitching about them when they suck, which is unfortunately pretty frequently in this conference, but there aren’t a whole lot of better options that I see.

The only issue that I can really bitch about is that there seems to be a tenure-type situation with officials. I see the same shitty refs all the time in this league. I’d at least like to see some new shitty refs to find out if they’re not quite as shitty.

Defense, defense, defense! The wrinkles Barnes added were tremendous. I LOVE the jumpout on the screens. You could see it bothered sheepaggy every time we did it. Atchley deserves an A++. The guy brings a lunch bucket every game now and just does whatever needs to be done. Same with Mason. One tiny gripe about the coaching: was it not possible to get DJ a few minutes rest in the second half when we were up by 25+? I know he sat once for about thirty seconds but good grief, JD Lewis is not THAT bad.

i agree with the 40 minutes of hell comment. Texas defense was unbelievable. i was really impressed with Atchley’s defense, when i have thought of him as a dishrag the past few years.

TExas definitely wanted it more. they were faster to rebound, lose balls, close out on shooters. its like they were everywhere.

i dont have the words, really…

connor is just impressing me more and more. he FIGHTS!
seems to me that playing with Damion is working him up. those guys had some serious work put in front of them with TAMU beef, and came through it like warriors….

AJ was my only bleak spot. puts it up like he doesnt know how to set his feet. has he got tennis elbow? trying too hard to play like AI, his idol and fellow wearer of the elbow gauze? he may have had an anomolous game against Baylor, because he continues to depress me with his shot selection…

liked how he picked up wangmene’s missed positional pass that one time, and how he bumped into wangmene on the subsequent trip down the floor. aly again out of position…

and yes, did wanna see more of dexpitt. we had the time and the pleasure to do so, but never gave him the minutes. there’s the big beef with Rick’s use of his big beef…

    outstanding again, tripps.

Steve, thanks man. Good recap. Must’ve been a great game to be at.

snaterly, I don’t think they’re peaking, I think key players are improving. Johnson, Chapman, Wangmene, and Mason are playing their best basketball of the year right now.

Chris, I heard that. I also heard the guy shooting from the lazy boy nearly hit his as well.

Barton, good to see your grades as always. DJ is adjusting to how teams defend him. It’s tough enough to defend at the 3 levels of offense but when you throw in his ability to get teammates easy looks, he’s a player of the year type talent. I agree, it should be a fun March.

Sailor, that was amazing. I thought it was James originally because the TV angle was so poor. Definitely a 4 year, Royal Ivey type leader on this team in only his second year.

Nordberg, it’ll be interesting to see how our 4 kids develop. Sampson’s late 90’s ou teams come to mind. These kids have more talent, however, ans that’ll show a couple years from now.

    B. Reaper, bobby probably just watches basketball when they beat Texas.

Ag Lurker, I hear you on the officiating. As for injuries, there’s not a team in America that can make a deep tourney run if its star player is injured.

South, good post. It seems like the Aggies have some chemistry problems (sorry Huck). Joe Jones needs to be more of leader but he’s a quiet kid with zero cartilage in his knees. Y’all miss Law in a big way.

Huck, the same crew that did our game did the Baylor/Ou game last night. The broadcaster kept calling them the best crew in the Big 12. They proceeded to call the game so erratically that a couple players and a strength coach were thrown out after a slap fight. Then, with 7 seconds left in overtime and ou down 3, they called a horrible touch foul on the jumpshooter that lead to a 4 point play. Then they called a bailout foul on Baylor’s desperation attempt with one second left. I guess it was a makeup call. The point is, we’ve got a problem with officiating in this conference. Call it consistently throughout the game and swallow your f’n whistles under 10 seconds.

huge, yep his Assist/TO ratio kept us afloat and largely went unnoticed by the media. I thought DJ played really well against Baylor eventhough he was 2-12.

Rasom, yep, we straight up guarded their ass on the perimeter, and battled every possession inside and on the boards. Aggie type teams should be our achilles heal, but we fought through our deficiencies and matchup problems and hopefully we can learn from that if we draw a Big 10 or Big East opponent in the later rounds.

ch, the 40 minutes of hell comment was right on. Nolan’s teams operated under the premise that they’ll be physical with you all 90 feet, fighting teams for every square inch of the court. They got away with it because they were deep enough and they knew there was no way officials could call every single foul. And they didn’t.

Scagnetti, thanks. Great points. That was as impressive a defensive performance as I’ve seen from this team. Hell maybe the last 3 teams we’ve put on the court. Great job of showing up in a revenge spot. I hope our football team was watching.
