Texas Longhorns Rank #25 in 2014 Preseason FPI

ESPN released its FPI preseason rankings for 2014 and the results are interesting.

The Texas Longhorns boast the #38 offense, #22 defense and bottom quartile special teams.  The overall result places them at #25 overall and 4th in the Big 12 behind OU, Baylor and OSU.

Texas Tech, TCU and & KSU are all slated for upper respectability while West Virginia, Iowa State and Kansas should limp up the rear

The methodology of FPI is curious - first, because ESPN won't release their weightings; second, because it's an objective attempt to codify the same subjective inputs we've all decided to value: returning starters, consistency, reputation, recruiting.  There's no deeper dig into which returning starters may possess more value than others (I'm partial to QB, OL, DB), how to deal with recruiting inflation, players as system beneficiaries or system creators etc.

That's fairly sobering.  A 3-3 season start is not improbable.
