2018 Texas Football Recruiting: OT Rafiti Ghirmai commits to the Longhorns

NCAA Football: Notre Dame at Texas Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The 4 star offensive tackle is the 18th commitment for the 2018 Longhorns and he fills a position of dire need. Ghirmai is a 6-5, 290 pound athlete who exhibits some very solid traits, most notably a strong desire to finish all of his blocks and a nasty streak between the whistles. He plays with motor and that’s something that’s a lot easier to nurture than to try to create in offensive linemen. He also exhibits a level of on-field athleticism that belies his combine numbers. He’s better in pads than shorts and that’s certainly better than the alternative. I also think his body is a prime candidate for re-engineering and he should hold 310+ while increasing overall athleticism.

More subtle measures like technical acumen, feet and desire to succeed at the college level remain to be seen.

The Horns are currently ranked 2nd in the 24/7 national rankings and if the final 4-5 commitments of the class fall as expected, Tom Herman seems almost certain to secure an elite Top 5 national class.
