The senior safety (who already has a Longhorn degree) will transfer and be eligible immediately, where he’ll have a good chance to start for the Red Raider secondary. The news is a bit of surprise given Bonney’s long history with the program, but the influx of talent in the Texas DB room meant that Bonney won’t be a starter and he didn’t want to rely on injuries to play in his final season of eligibility.
Why would Tom Herman allow that?
I heard former Texas DB John Bonney will likely play for Texas Tech as a grad transfer. Texas football coach Tom Herman could have blocked the transfer to a conference opponent. When I asked why Herman did not limit Bonney's options, I was told, "He just wants John to be happy."

Good on Tom Herman for letting a player who did it right in Austin have freedom of movement to a conference rival, even if at the possibility of haunting us down the road.
