Tyler Owens is a four star safety from Plano with rare measurables, having run a 10.34 100 meters at 6-2, 200 pounds. His commitment moves Texas to 17 commitments in the class and a Top 10 ranking nationally.
Owens blew up in the recruiting rankings after showing well in the camp circuit, but there’s a disconnect between his physical abilities and on-field play as a junior. He’s a little stiff and doesn’t show great instincts. My sense is that he may be late to football and still learning the game. It’s also possible that his senior film, not yet posted, shows a very different player who is already starting to translate his athleticism better to the game.
The UT staff clearly identified a terrific athlete that they think they can coach up.
