The Longhorns landed their 18th commitment for the 2019 class in linebacker David Gbenda. The Katy Cinco Ranch product is rated a four star recruit by 24-7’s composite and is considered a Top 35 recruit in the 2019 state of Texas class.
Gbenda is a compact (5-11 or 6-0 tall) linebacker who shows good instincts and excellent lateral ability. He’s an effective blitzer and shows good range in the running game, in addition to an ability to diagnose play flow.
The primary concern with Gbenda is size. As he adds weight to his frame from his current 210 pounds, he could negate the lateral ability that makes him special and he may lack the length to separate from college level blockers. However, plenty of successful Big 12 linebackers profile very similarly to Gbenda and if he can add 20+ pounds to his current frame without losing mobility, he’s definitely a high floor keeper.
Absent a blue chip cherry pick, the Longhorns may be done with a three LB class of Gbenda, Floyd and Tillman.
