Oklahoma St defensive coordinator named head coach at Toledo

Posted by HenryJames on December 4th, 2008 under Uncategorized

Tim Beckman is expected to be named the new head coach at Toledo.

Beckman is an Ohio native and has coached at both Bowling Green and Ohio State. Missouri defensive coordinator and Toledo alum Matt Eberflus also interviewed for the job.

Beckman, an intense dude, did an admirable job with Okie State’s defense this year finishing in the top half of the league in total defense and points allowed. But it’s got to suck trying to stop Big 12 offenses with an undermanned defense.

  1. And, in other coaching news, this doesn’t look good:

Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers says the school is negotiating a contract extension with Mike Leach, amid reports that the Red Raiders’ coach has met with the University of Washington about the Huskies’ top job.

However, Leach’s agent told ESPN’s Joe Schad that no talks are currently under way.

“We have not received any information about Mike Leach’s contract from Texas Tech via phone, mail, e-mail or fax,” Leach’s agent, Gary O’Hagan, said Wednesday. “At no point has there been any offer. There have not been negotiations.”

Purely from the perspective of their names, it’s hard to believe a guy named Beckman would win the head-to-head over an Eberflus and the full weight of the Seuss tradition.

“For my first official act as proud Head Coach of the Toledo Rockets, I’m going to rename the safeties and cornerbacks ‘bizzle-binks’. We’ll also be changing the school fight song to ‘Fah Hoo Forres’. I’m happy to be moving the program in new directions.”

Mizzou can’t catch a break these days. Now maybe the only way to get Coach “there is no D in Eberflus” out of town is if Barack Obama appoints him as ambassador to some third world hell hole. We have just about as much chance of that happening as him getting a HC gig.

We’ve discussed this issue around here at length. Nobody really knows what his objective is, and you’re right, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. My personal opinion is that he allows the DC to do about whatever he wants. Unless, you subscribe to the theory that Leach only cares about

Actually, I got somewhat correct in the write-up, but was thinking 1994 was his first as DC. I remember him switching to the 4-4/4-2-5 my freshman year in fall of 1995. We were completely shocked when he rolled it out and almost beat #2 Penn State in Happy Valley the first game.

“Goodner’s scheme was exposed by Robinson. I seemed to remember his quote when asked about how USC could score like they did. “We saw what they were doing on film, it was fairly easy.” It has been awhile and I don’t have the exact quote but that was the jest of it.”

elcapitan, I agree that was one of the more depressing days in Tech football history. But that USC squad really out-classed us in talent. I doubt it mattered what scheme we were running. After running the ball down our throats is was Rob Johnson to Keyshawn Johnson again and again, and again.

I’ve seen TCU’s defense play a couple of times this year on TV and I’m almost certain they would make mincemeat out of us without Sheffield.

Agree with you, BH, about the k-state Fluke Frauds. Unfortunately, KU will need to play a hell of lat better than they have recently if they’re going to expose anyone.

When I say lock, I should clarify a lock to score or be responsible for 14 points a game via turnover. I’m serious about that. I can remember chanting, “Score, defense, score!” in the stands.

After I did that, they put up pictures of my mugshot from the Dallas Morning News in their cubicles from when I had my DUI misunderstanding, weapons charges (are you seriously telling me that a sword cane is a weapon?), and violation of the Mann Act. It’s a good thing that cocaine dissolves in bourbon!

jdee – During the four years Zebbie Letheridge was starting at QB for Tech, the general consensus among my friends was that the defense would have to score for us to win. We didn’t need Zach Thomas and Pat Green to tell us when to get loud, either. But it’s funny how mad

Think of it as a patronage system if you will. The more schools indebted to the current bowl system, the less willing to support a playoff.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the Leach era for me has been his laissez-faire attitude towards the defensive side of the football. He’s always done the easy thing and followed tendencies with the hiring of Ruffin McNeill. For Tech fans, this has meant crossing our fingers and hoping it was the right thing.

    I grew up
