blogpoll – Draft – Week 7

Posted by Scipio Tex on October 18th, 2009 under Football

Here is this week’s ballot. Comments, questions, insults appreciated.

1. Alabama – Tough win on the road.
2. Florida – Hawgs can beat Gators, but not Zebras.
3. Texas – Our OC squats to pee, but don’t piss off our D.
4. USC – The insufferable media machine begins anew.
5. Miami – Sleepwalks over UCF.
6. Iowa - Keeps winning on the road in tough environments.
7. Cincinnati – Big win over USF without Pike.
8. TCU – Dominating win, finally.
9. LSU - Dumbest team in America.
10. Georgia Tech- 309 yard rushing against Va Tech is manly.
11. Boise State – OU beat Tulsa 45-0. Boise? 28-21. Please.
12. Oregon – Bye week.
13. Oklahoma State – They’re developing other players at WR - losing Dez is a mixed blessing.
14. Virginia Tech - Can’t trust ‘em.
15. Penn State – Wake me up when they play anyone.
16. BYU – Struggled with weak SDSU team.
17. Ohio State - Their self-destruction is deeply amusing to me.
18. Houston – Win over weak Memphis Tulane.
19. Texas Tech - Sticks, baby.
20. Pittsburgh - Dare I trust the Wannstache?
21. South Carolina – They get to stick around after solid showing.
22. Nebraska – Lit up in Lincoln. The B12 North is a travesty.
23. Notre Dame - Game effort against USC.
24. Oklahoma - Lost by 5 points to three top 16 teams.
25. Arkansas - Getting better every week.

  1. Interesting position of Miami, but I kind of like it. Agree with your moving Iowa up - they deserve to be there.

    Hook ‘em!!!

Bama played in Tuscaloosa (or they’ve started wearing houndstooth in Columbia).

  3. Oops, my bad.

  4. Those backwoods SEC burghs all blur together for me too.

    Where’s Kansas State?

  6. Ha ha.

    Or Colorado.

    Sticks=Money

  8. Kansas State has been rebranded as “Karate”.

It sounds cooler, you’ve got to admit, and KSU grads wouldn’t mind making a knife-hands gesture when asked about their alma mater.

  9. Houston beat Tulane, not Memphis.

  10. OK, thanks. I think I’m going to go ahead and look at the team profiles instead of rely on my post-Sportscenter memory.

    Geez.

    Post-mortem, plz!

  13. Where are the Aggies? They’re back this year, I’ve heard.

  14. The Aggies are back. In a truck-stop bathroom offering $5 pleasure.

  15. Why wouldn’t you put the Longhorns in front of Florida? You afraid of being called a homer?

They should be knocked down for those atrocious calls and they were playing at home.

  16. Patrick -

I seriously considered it. I’ve had the Top 3 looking like this for five weeks now. Basically, I trust our offense less than those of the other two teams.

  17. Amen. FLA would probably beat Texas 7-2.

Must have been tough to put the fighting condoms at 4. Until they get beat which could happen this weekend, Iowa deserves to be ahead of Miami.

I also think Arizona, Wisconsin, and West Virginia should be in your blog poll.

  19. Arizona needs to win more to earn it.

Wisconsin & West Virginia do nothing for me.

  20. Texas’ offense has more upside than Florida’s but that potential is also dependent on Greg Davis pulling his head out of his ass (unlikely), our coaches deploying the right combination of players at WR/TE (this week’s depth chart looks promising), and Colt simply executing better (decent odds).

The Top 7 looks good to me. Throw the next 10 in a hat and pick at random.

  21. Georgia Tech has a nice schedule ahead of them. They’re going to mount a Top 10 push.

It would have been nice to pound OU out of the top 25. Anyone know when the last time was that they were unranked? I’m sure they have another “L” or two in them.

  23. After Karate aggy game, cannot not wait to get byrned this week.

More on Simmons’ craziness. The point is to determine the chances the Pats can get 2 yards on 4th down. He uses hindsight to determine that the specific play called had a low chance of obtaining the 2 yards. This is tantamount to saying that someone is an idiot for going

Couldn’t agree more, Raydurz. Davis has some nice instincts and anticipation on defense, but he crosses midcourt with the dribble and looks desperate to get rid of it. We won’t know what we truly have with Darko until conference play. UW and Stanford won’t be enough to judge. My concern with

I honestly think Colt will win. This is the perfect career achievement year.

He will have more wins than any other QB (that’s enough for a lot of folks), add in the ridiculous completion percentage (another record), the respect of current and former players (including rivals), and some potential sub conscious sympathy votes

Oh yeah, Schaub makes at least ine crazy, fear-based throw per game. That — and this may be play-calling — but the Texans seem to run some Greg-Davisian slow developing out routes which require a 30 yard horizontal throw to gain 3 yards. Schaub makes that throw look like a pick-6 damn near

I agree with that. I understand going for it, even though I think the punt has a better chance of delaying the inevitable to the point that the game ends first.

Phenomenal: All of Mangino’s salary is privately funded and not paid for with tuition money or by the state. I’m guessing the same would apply to any buyouts. If not, yeah, it’d look very bad and it probably wouldn’t happen.

VY can do better than Nashville. An undercurrent to this year’s Titans, and one that shouldn’t be forgotten, is that VY is playing on Bud Adams’ direct order. VY success = Fisher credibility undermined. Based on the interviews I have read the entire Titans locker room — particulalry Chris Johnson — have

How strapped in Kansas for cash? Paying a lofty buyout won’t look good when the state is closing its judicial system one week a month to save money. I’m not saying that should stop the athletic department – Pinkel got his raise last year the same week the legislature announced a salary freeze

Among many, many strengths of Mack Brown, is the unconditional support he gives to players in their drive to turn pro. He even invited Romance to pro day. There are many coaches, like Mangino allegedly, who use their influence to scare players that they’ll provide negative feedback to scouts. Other tactics include hiding players from

Erik – That’s what I had thought too, but it’s unrelated. Having re-read the terms, the 300k is what he gets paid pursuant to section 3, which defines his base contract.

The additional money (roughly 1.7/yr) that we owe him come from section 8 and are defined as TV, radio, interent, endorsement, etc..

I didn’t realize Mangino’s attendance bonus was so high. He was due to get $125k if season tickets sold were over 40,000 by 9/1/09. As of 8/1/09 they were at 35,000. This is over 8 times more than his original contract ($15k for 40,000 tickets.) Even if he didn’t break 40k,

If he wanted to, Euclid could probably figure it out.

After my post about Gabbert not throwing interceptions, he threw a bunch against NU. After my post about lack of interceptions, Harrison got one against KSU. I’m hoping this post produces a missed field goal tomorrow.

I think you could jimmy the numbers sufficiently based on game situation to make the punt slightly preferable. What you can’t do is jimmy them enough to make going for it an awful call, unless you resort to numerous logical erros, a’la Simmons.

In recent weeks I’ve made several cracks about how great teams are at kicking field goals against the Tigers. It seems like they never miss. Thing is, I assumed I was wrong. I figured I only remembered the good FGs. Oddly enough, it’s true. As good as Grant Ressel is at kicking FGs, Mizzou’s opponents

But if that’s the case, then when does this come in (section 3)? Never is his full salary mentioned, but rather, that he’s due 300k per year for every year he coaches after January 1, 2008… meaning 300k for last year and a pro-rated figure for this year.

Trust me, I won’t claim to have any
