Quick Tidbit From The Asset
From the guy who first told you Shipley wouldn't play against Texas Tech, there's some much better news on that front. Jaxon Shipley participated in practice yesterday and looks like he will be a go for Saturday against Mizzou according to The Asset.
The true freshman didn't compete in contact drills or scrimmage work, but he did some conditioning and ran routes. He didn't look quite 100%, but The Asset thinks Ship will go against the Tigers.
So, David Ash, who had a mediocre practice, should have an extra weapon to work with in Columbia on Saturday.
I'll have a full report in the next day or so, and hopefully some smoke signals from the humidor, if things work out.

So you sips are trying to replace the most respected football program in the southwest with tekk on Thanksgiving! HA! HA! HA!
Some of you tards have been saying we will be buried once we move to the SEC but that will not happen. Have you seen our recruits? Malcolm Brown will be changing to the good guys and you will all be scratching your heads.
Even if we are not the champs every year at least we are trying to compete at the highest level.

But then comes the 2nd half, when TAMoo fans get to watch their team collapse again. Must hurt to realize Texas has a better record right now than your pre-season Top-10 Aggie team of the decade.

Aggie Jack, Malcolm Brown isn’t likely going to quit playing for a team where he’s already had three 100-yard games.
Oh wait, I forgot you’re an Aggie and spelling has never been your strong suit. You must mean Malcom Brown, without the L. I’m trying to understand why he’d switch his commitment to a team that has put on clinic after clinic on how to piss away a game in the 2nd half. Do you have some info that we don’t? I’d be interested in the Big Cigar’s take on the PSU mess, and any comments he may have heard from UT staff. IIRC, the PSU staff visited Texas prior to the 2005 season to learn the zone-read offense, then used it to rebound from 4-7 in 2004 to 11-1 in 2005.

The ags are gossiping that one of the farm boys has raised a longhorn steer for the past few years and had purposely distorted the horns of the poor animal so they point down and don’t follow their natural curvature. Supposedly, they are going to parade this beast on the field at halftime to show how funny animal cruelty can be. I hope they don’t do this, especially on national television. Then again, if they already have the animal, maybe i hope they do.
Can’t wait until the details get worked out for the Thanksgiving game in the post a&m; era. Ah! The post a&m; era is going to be sweet.

I’m curious to hear from Jesus/theAsset/Big Cigar whether there is any internal discussion about the possible NCAA rule changes.
http://chronicle.com/article/NCAA-to-Consider-Sweeping/129483/
I’m sure the answer will be that they will deal with them when they begin to take effect, but the proposal to reduce the season in all sports (=including football) by 10% is significant. Reducing scholarships from 88 to 80 isn’t drastic, but taking one game off the football schedule each year is rather significant for a program like Texas’. Is there any internal chatter about this inside Belmont?

“I was dismayed to Read David Ubben claim that we would have mediocre QB play from Ash next season. I was rather hoping that this season would pay off for Ash and the’horns in a big way.”
@ Pistol: Why are you concerned about what Ubben would claim about Ash or anyone else for that matter? Do you really think that no-talent hack would ever offer any sort of objective evaluation of any Texas player? He is a well-known OU and Mizzou homer and will trash Texas at every opportunity, as evidenced in his extremely anti-Texas biased ‘reporting’ in the conference realignment fiasco.
Don’t worry, Ash will be fine next year. Remember, he has only had since August to learn this offense and to adjust to the speed of the college game. One thing that is very encouraging to me is that I see vast improvment over the last two weeks in his decision making and confidence, and I think that by the end of the season he will look like a completely different player than the one who stepped on the 40 Acres last August.

Pistol,
I honestly feel that Brewer will shirt. I also feel that after looking at David Ash play that he is no Greg McElroy.. Or rather Greg McElroy is no David Ash. The 54 Yard run by Ash should have put it to rest.
You know when we we pass off of the Play Action, I dont necessarily give the QB as much credit. More because the running game has caused enough indecision in the Safeties that all the QB has to do is to put the ball in the right spot and he gets a big gain. The plays where the QB is looking at a third and long on obvious passing downs, where he has to make the right decision is where I look at how good the QB is. I think in that respect Ash did very well. He had two situations of third and long (that I can remember) where he took off the for the 54 yard run and the other where he put the ball on the money in #84’s hands… That was perfect and you can see that the decision making has markedly improved.
We have to maintain perspective. He is a freshman.

Jesus,
Gerry at 247 has been reporting since yesterday that there is big news on the recruiting front with a major OOS kid perhaps about to switch from another school for UT. He has said he can’t spill the beans as of yet…
Any insight? If you can’t say the name that is fine, but have you heard anything regarding something about to come down the pipeline?
by Big Ern on Nov 9, 2025 10:49 AM CST reply actions
Any projections about Ash or Brewer would be pretty wild guesses right now, wouldn’t they? I don’t know how Ubben can make that prediction. Ash shows he can run, throw and think. He is also getting better. With that trend, it seems observers would be optimistic.
Brewer is a high school QB whom I am glad is coming to Texas. Projecting him or any incoming freshman to take a top spot from an experienced upper classman is just a fantasy game. We’ve got a few five stars that did not pan out as we hoped (no reflection on those players as people, just the way it is) and other players who have shone better than expected.
I like to follow recruiting and used to feel sorry for the upperclassmen who would no doubt lose their positions to the incoming studs. Fully recognizing that this year is an exception to what I am about to say, it almost never works that way. I’m now experienced enough to be glad of the very good players we get, but I don’t hold much immediate expectation for them. Some will shine, some won’t. You don’t know which until they get here.
That way I can enjoy a wonderful surprise like Earl Thomas, Joe Bergeron or Jaxon Shipley while not feeling disappointed in other recruits who may take more than a year or two to become great contributors.
I’m sounding preachy. Sorry.

Another thing to note is that I have grown weary of high profile high school players. Dont get me wrong, I think Brewer will do well. But I dont want us to lose perspective of where Ash is and what he has already achieved. Remember, for as good as Brewer can be, he could also be GGV2.0. You never know. Ash is good, he has the skills and he needs the fanbase behing him.

I’ve only watched one of Brewer’s games and he definitely can throw but it looked like he could use a redshirt year to adjust to the Big 12 level of play. Overstreet, on the other hand, looks to be very quick, fast and tough, like he could run the wildcat plays pretty quickly. That’s just my feeling. I’m sure the coaches will figure it out. It’s nice to have those be your “problems.”
Now as to trolls, I think they add something — like a good laugh to the day. However, Aggie Jack obviously isn’t up to the level of Aggie Rick. What I would suggest is that before I troll could post here he would have to go over to TexasAggs and post there, like Aggie Rick did, and stir up the Aggies. (I split a gut laughing at that post, my best laugh in ages.) Then a troll would come back here and post with a link to his TexasAgg post. That should be the minimum requirement to troll here; that or a couple of journalism awards.

We will get a much better idea this week than we have the last 2 because Missouri, while no defensive juggernaut, is tougher against the run and he is going to be forced to throw more. Turnovers are the only way we lose this game and I am hoping we do not have them.

I’m not sure how Ubben’s comments merit concern. Has his talent evaluation skill been particularly prescient on this topic? I’ll guess a floor on Ash with a former Boise QB would be Jared Zabransky. Ceiling? We’ll see. I don’t want to set anyone up with expectations of a future top draft pick, but I trust Harsin to make it work wherever Ash ends up in your personal pantheon of quarterbacks.

the tight end role in the boise/harsin offense is absolutely critical. the absence of proven talent on hand at that position who can be counted on for stellar blocking as well as stellar receiving would suggest that we are scorching the known earth for prospects unless we are absolutely certain that that guy is already on campus — which may be true.
so, if there is a mystery high-flyer out there who is likely to pitch in with us at some point, i have to strongly suspect that he (i’m assuming it’s a he and bigger than a breadbox) is a tight end or a candidate to move to that position.

This game is pretty much a tossup. Why do you think turnovers are the only way that Texas loses this game? Another way is that Mizzou defends the Texas run game ok with only 7 in the box and the Texas passing game just can’t score as many points as the balanced Mizzou offense.
Mizzou is really vulnerable to the big play. If Texas can force Mizzou to bring a safety up to defend the run, Mizzou will be quite vulnerable deep (if Ash can hit the deep target). Those are two big "If"s.
Mizzou’s QB is accurate but has a weak arm. He looks like a HS QB throwing the ball. Texas is going to pick off some of his passes. There is also a pretty good chance that Franklin gets knocked out of the game since he runs quite a bit, doesn’t get down as much as he should, and isn’t built to withstand big hits.
Ash has progressed a bunch the last couple of weeks, against weak defenses. It will be really interesting to see if he can play at the same level vs Mizzou.
Assuming Brown is healthy, I hope that Foz plays a lot of snaps split out some (rather than at TB) to:
- get both Foz and either Brown or Bergeron on the field at the same time,
- get Foz more snaps,
- give Ash an easy safety valve pass target who gets lots of YAC.

I think there’s a decent chance that we’ll have a Heisman winner during Ash’s tenure, but it won’t be Ash. It will be a running back. You might know who I’m talking about.

kanawa, I doubt we’d base our gameplan on a recruit’s presence. That said, I believe we’ll need to pass more in order to win for other reasons already stated in this thread.
JS, is MB 100%, or did The Asset get into that? Will we get a more expanded report from him this week? Not being ungrateful—-just hoping.
by Jake Lonergan on Nov 9, 2025 12:48 PM CST reply actions
Kafka,
The reason Vegas has the game picked so close is our past history of turnovers this year. Bettors that run their numbers are aware of these and until we can cut them out, games like Missouri will go off with the lines being close. As soon as we show that we are able to play error free against at least moderately descent defenses the spreads will start favoring us by more against these weaker opponents. I hope that helps.
by DKR on Nov 9, 2025 1:03 PM CST reply actions
A lot of us seem to be assuming the only way to a win is based on our ability to pass under the asumption our running game will be a lot less productive, and that’s a valid concern/point of view. Personally, I believe our ability to shut down their running game is an even bigger key. Franklin is a mediocre passer from what I’ve seen and if we can keep him and Josie (reasonably)in check and make them one dimensional, then our offense can stay with the ground game longer and wear them down. Also keep in mind that our ability to attack the edge in our newfound running game, along with a newly discovered screen game and the Foz cat can counteract an overcrowded box. I may be Pollyanna here, but I don’t think they can stop our run with an honest front. We aren’t going to get 400 yards, but I believe we’ll get more than enough to win if we can stop them from running successfully.
by Jake Lonergan on Nov 9, 2025 1:06 PM CST reply actions
Put me down for a Kool-Aid induced 400+ yards rushing prediction. I feel like this is the game where someone breaks out an 80+ yard TD run that skews all the overall stats.
by Ricky on Nov 9, 2025 1:20 PM CST reply actions
Whichever team runs for over 200 yards wins. Personally, I like our running schemes and blocking personnel better. I also like our D-line better. I think we’ll go blow for blow with them in the passing game, and we’ll outrun them. I say they get around 150 on the ground and we get around 250 on the ground. Both teams get around 200 in the air. Turnovers are obviously key, but there’s not a game in which that doesn’t apply.
by burntorangejuice on Nov 9, 2025 1:28 PM CST reply actions
DKR: still not buying it because it is way too simplistic. Turnovers are always important but there are so many other factors to consider.
No way Texas rushes for 400.
As far as power running inside, it boils down to blocking Mizzou’s DTs (I assume Luke does a good job of blocking the DEs). If Texas can block Mizzou’s DTs, then Texas should be able to run well inside. Those Mizzou DTs are about 300 pounds each and Mack says they are NFL prospects.
Agree that Texas running wide will stress Mizzou. Think the ratio of jet sweeps to inside runs will increase vs Mizzou.
When Foz is at TB, would like to see Texas fake the jet sweep in one direction and pass to Foz in the flat in the opposite direction.
Expect to see something like the K offense with Ash throwing lots of high percentage short passes to backs in the flat. This should also force safeties to come up to defend.

Good news about Ship. Thanks JS
LSU and Alabama are stupendous at the moment and everyone knows it.
Everyone else in the SEC is playing catchup right now but it wasn’t so long ago that ’bama was off the SEC championship radar and LSU…..well, LSU is up one season and down the next.
One of the main effects of aggy and misery going East in is that it dilutes the quality of the SEC in general so that the Tennessees and Ole Misses etc will have a shot at a better record.

Apparently Mizzou lost their 3rd Texas recruit today since they announced they are SEC bound. Jonathan Williams already decommitted, which was a pretty big loss for them. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain any sort of foothold in the State moving forward.

Probably right.
“Personally, I like our running schemes and blocking personnel better. I also like our D-line better.”
Not so sure, their TB is running wild this season against good competition. Our best running is vs weak competition. The Mizzou QB is also a running threat.
“I think we’ll go blow for blow with them in the passing game”
They have the better QB so he probably throws for more yards. Having said that, Ash did a good job in the short passing game vs KU and that might also work well vs Mizzou (especially with Mizzou focusing on stopping the horns running game).
My guess is that it comes down to whether Texas can efficiently exploit the Mizzou D big play vulnerability with the deep play action pass into single coverage. Another decisive factor will be whether Texas can efficiently block the Mizzou OTs.
Road games can be tough for frosh and Texas plays a lot of frosh.

Big Ern,
For sure it is going to hurt Mizzou’s Texas recruiting. Parents want to see their kids play. You can pack up the car and take the family to games in Texas and Oklahoma. A Texas family isn’t going to drive to most of the SEC game locations.

Mizzou has an extremely balanced offense, it will be a major accomplishment to make them one dimensional. I do agree that if Texas controls the Mizzou run and forces Mizzou to pass, Mizzou is in trouble.

Kafka,
Like I said, it might be simple. We win if Ash does not turn it over. I never said we were going to rush for 400 yds…I said just the opposite and that we were going to have to throw this game. I have been playing the games for many years and yes, it can be that simplistic. Do you think it is coincidence that the Cowboys lose so much when they can’t run? They have better players than most teams but have 1 playoff win in 14 years. There is a lot of money made by simply following the turnovers.
Missouri can not carry our jock straps without turnovers. The 1 skewed stat to turnovers is that the team that gets them has the ball more and yes, they might run for more yards. We stay away from the turnovers and we win.

They only rushed for 112 against K State. I think the state of our defense right now, is at least as good as K State’s. I wouldn’t have said that 4 weeks ago. Our best running, as in for over 400 yards, has come against weak competition, true. But we’ve run well, ie. 200+ yards against good competition.

Ricky,
Sorry for harshin’ your mellow. I do think that Texas has a good chance at breaking some long plays because Mizzou has given up some big plays so you could easily be right about the big runs.

DKR-
I also have been known to wager and you are right. I think if we stay away from bad plays that we win easily. Turning the ball over also hurts the way a team thinks.

Mikey,
They will learn. Our athletes are so superior. Ash does not need to make a lot of plays, just a few to keep drives going. If he is to be a long term fixture, he needs to show he can perform without turning it over. He is a freshman and we cannot expect the world from him, just a steady performance but he does need to do that.

Not familiar with either of them but the two that I know of are:
Simon Goines and Evan Boehm.
Apparently DL Donald Hopkins has also openly said he is considering opening up his recruitment and reached out to UT. Guessing we are all full at DT.
But they are not having a smooth ride after the announcement. I thought all these kids were going to be falling all over themselves to play in the SEC, SEC, SEC.
by Big Ern on Nov 9, 2025 3:06 PM CST reply actions
Thanks Big Ern. Goines was quoted in an article posted over on BON about how MU recruits from Texas were a bit torn about the move to the SEC. I think he said he wanted to come to Mizzou to get revenge on teams like UT and OU that didn’t recruit him, but I thought he said he was fine with the move. It certainly didn’t say he was dropping the Tigers, nor did the article mention the other defections. I saw on Rivals that Williams said his decommitment had nothing to do with Mizzou’s move to the SEC. I think in both cases, the players are being a bit coy.
by Ricky on Nov 9, 2025 3:31 PM CST reply actions
I did see that Gerry Hamilton said the Williams decommitment was expected by many and very well may have had nothing to do with the SEC move. I think Mizzou was on him early but he has shown interest in other schools for a while. There is speculation he will end up at Arky.
by Big Ern on Nov 9, 2025 3:41 PM CST reply actions
Funny Big Ern. One of Mizzou’s St. Louis recruits was saying the move would help them reel in DGB, since they guy would rather play against SEC teams than Big 12 teams. My main thought was the move to the SEC probably helps Arky more than Mizzou. For as much as I hate those pigfuckers, I would rather he go to Arkansas than OU.
by Ricky on Nov 9, 2025 3:46 PM CST reply actions
I think Mizzou is in for a rough sledding for a long time. Aggy at least has a realistic shot at getting adequate talent to win since it is all right in their backyard. They can rely solely on recruiting their own state and trying to pick off a few kids from LA (easier said than done, but is still right next door to them).
I have no idea what in the hell Mizzou thinks they are going to do. 30+ kids a year on their roster from TX will not be sustained now that they will only play one game in TX every other year, and maybe not even that depending on how divisional alignment shakes out. Even in its best years, Mizzou can’t close its own borders with Okie and Arky poaching from the southern parts of the State and the Big X routinely picking off the top kids out of STL and KC.

Yes, I did mean DTs. What do you think Harsin’s approach might be? If you run inside, you have to block the DTs. To avoid the DTs, you can run outside or quick pass. Running inside has been an essential part of Texas attack lately. If you devote 2 blockers to blocking the DT, that is one less blocker for other purposes (such as blocking an LB).
BTW, Texas and Mizzou have the same record (1-2) vs their 3 common opponents: OU, OSU, and ISU.

There you go. We’ve got Fozzy, DJ Monroe, Marquise Goodwin, David Ash, Malcolm Brown, and Joe Bergeron.
