Texas received a verbal commitment from a Top 150 national recruit and the best DL prospect in the state of Oklahoma. Ron Tatum is a big (6-4, 265) SDE from Oklahoma City. He’s a consensus 4 star and a national recruit with offers from everyone that matters.
Crucially, he’s a fit for Orlando’s 4i DE position against the backdrop of an in-state DL group that lacks depth beyond one or two headliners. The 4i position seeks length, motor, the strength to hold against double teams and the ability to initiate an interior pass rush. Tatum’s specs are pretty much what you draw up on the white board.
Tatum has ideal size and a good motor. If there’s any knock, it’s that he’s not going to rock a SPARQ test, but he works through traffic well, uses his hands, has good get off and natural ball instincts. Reminds me a bit of Taco Charlton from Michigan.
That Texas is robbing OU’s pocket 30 minutes from their campus after taking their former QB commitment is just sweetener.
New era in Austin, folks.
