Whether Ash has the job alone remains to be seen. Herman is familiar with Ash from their time to together at Ohio State, where Ash was co-DC for their national title run. Ash also had a run as the head coach at Rutgers, where he was 8-32.
Quick thoughts:
- Ash is a back to basics DC who favors 4 man fronts and simple looks. He’ll have an adjustment period to Big 12 offenses, but at least he won’t scheme f*** his own defense before the first snap.
- Herman has, thus far, demonstrated a very narrow hiring capacity limited to his small circle of coaching associates. That’s already backfired once. He won’t get another chance.
- Any sane scheme will do. That’s secondary to what ails Texas on defense. They need teaching and basic positional coaching.
- The position hires on defense will be as important as the DC hire. Texas has a massive teaching deficit to tackle in 2020.
I’ll have more thoughts on the Everyone Gets a Trophy podcast next week.
