In a move that surprises no one except for Jesse Palmer, the Original Golf Prick and Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier (OGP or HBC) has yanked starting QB Tommy Beecher and said that Chris Smelley will start at quarterback for South Carolina against Vanderbilt on Thursday night.
Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said he made the decision after starter Tommy Beecher could not practice Monday because he couldn't lift his non-throwing shoulder. Spurrier did add that Smelley probably deserves to start even if Beecher was not injured.
Probably?
Beecher threw four picks in his first career start and when Smelley entered the game after Beecher got injured. Smelley then completed all five of his passes and led the Gamecocks on three scoring drives. Beecher just continued how he performed all spring and fall camp.
